While I reject the Pope Joan story as a complete fabrication, your logic falls a bit short. We’ve had some popes that, while male, were absolutely evil men. If God did not act to keep them out of office, why would we expect Him to keep a woman out? I wish He would have but He, in His wisdom and sovereignty, chose not to.
Ever hear of Pope Sixtus V?

He was Pope in 1590, and to make a much longer story short, he had done a revision the Vulgate himself and planned to promulgate that Bibler version of his own Papal authority. He had even written a Papal Bull for purposes of introducing his revised text. The problem was he had created a great many errors during his own work of revising the text, which means that had he manage to promulgate his text, he would have been formally teaching error.

Just before he was able to promulgate the text, he died in bed. Though determined to see his project to its promulgation, it never happened because he died before he could release his texts to the world. There is nothing in the record that reveals he had any ongoing health problems before he died.

It is a classic case of a Pope who would be formally teaching error from teh Chair of Peter, and yet he left this world before he could. The gates of hades did not overcome the Church, or the Papacy, in that case. Similarily, it is no stretch to believe that God would not allow a women into the Chair of Peter–because the very existence of a female Pope would be an act of formally teaching error.

You make a good point that we have some less than stellar Popes, yet none of them tried to teach error. A woman must lie and deceieve a great many people to rise to the Chair of Peter, and if one were able to do that, then it sets the lie to the Churches teachings about infallibility, and it sets the lie to the Biblical statement that the gates of hades will not prevail (Popes must be Catholic men).

You’re missing my point. If you believe God would have kept a woman from ascending to the Chair of Peter, why would he not also have kept Pope Sixtus V out for being lousy at Bible translating or some of the others who were morally deficient? I know that none of these guys ever made a formal error but they were still the pope. In theory, and again, I do not believe this ever happened, He could allow a woman to take the office but prevent her from teaching error. My point was that God didn’t always protect us from having an evil occupant on the Chair of Peter. Why should we be so certain that He’d keep a female impostor out of the position?

Pretty bad actor, if you ask me. That’s not the way a Pope sits or acts. Ha Ha Ha. Yep -its false alright.

Infallibility means protection from promulgating error in teachings regarding faith and morals. The very existence of a female Pope would be promulgating error, while the existence of a less than perfect male Pope would not.

I think it is important that everything be not faith-shaking.

There is a coming persecution and we should be ready for all sorts of craziness to occur.

But God will not abandon his Church and we win in the end. 👍

According to the press release, Pope Joan is a German-Italian-Spanish mini-series produced in 2009. It is four hours long.

Reelzchannel, a digital cable channel which potentially reaches 60 million viewers, made news earlier this year when it agreed to run a series on the Kennedy’s. Even the History Channel turned down the series because it contained too many factual errors and exaggerations.
artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/01/the-kennedys-finds-a-home-on-reelz/

Wow, when the History Channel turns down a sensationalistic program because the program is inaccurate, that is saying something. And it says something about the standards of ReelzChannel that they would agree to run it.
Wow. Even the History Channel wouldn’t run it? That is pretty bad, considering how much pseudo-history they run on their regular programs.

I remember this story…she was the pope until she gave birth in a public place…kind of put an end to her pontificate…
That’s the story. Makes for entertainment, but it’s not fact. Nice irony though – she is exposed because she goes into labor during a public ceremony. Of course she would go into labor while attending a public ceremony – how else could such a bad fairy tale end?

I just watched on YouTube an old ABC documentary on her…

Seems fake to me.

That’s easy.

The Holy Spirit said Popes can only be men. Popes may or not be bad people, theoretically. Men however, cannot be women.

Therefore, we can have good male popes, and bad male Popes, but neither good nor bad female Popes.

It is not impossible for God to change hearts or minds, and have bad men do good works. It is impossible for God to turn men into women though.

I disagree. (Again, I want to be certain that everyone knows I don’t believe there was a female pope.) Had this fraud actually occurred, she would not have been a valid pope so nothing she did would be valid anyway. However, if she didn’t try to do anything while occupying the office, how could she be trying to promulgate error. Promulgating error requires promulgating something. If she had done nothing, she couldn’t have promulgated anything.

Amen. Not too far removed from this issue was the recent statement of one of Obama’s flunkies in which he said that the administration had the authority to order the Catholic Church to ordain women.

Yeah, I don’t think that anyone could really believe that there was a female pope…quite an accomplishmenton so many levels …
And if there were, she wouldn’t look like that.

Cool chair, though.

I’m pretty sure Jesus said with God all things are possible. I don’t know why He’d want to but… He is God, after all.

i saw the ABC episode with diane sawyer about Pope Joan. i found it very interesting.
of course, if they are making a movie of this, people will think it is true like the da vinci code movie. this is the first news i have had of the movie. don’t know if i will watch it.
there seems to be a wide audience for anything to do with secrets within the Catholic Church - whether they are true or not!

Personally I think there MIGHT (again, MIGHT) be a slight possibility that female DID manage to pass as a male pope way back in the early Dark Ages------

But even IF true----------so what? Does that mean that women should automatically now be granted the right to become priests and even Popes???

So because maybe a woman heretically and despicably managed to deceive and lie her way into the higher echelons (and eventually, the HIGHEST echelon) of Holy Mother Church, thereby incurring for herself a mortal sin and possible eternal damnation in the process-------not to mention staining the Church’s reputation in the process-----that that then should be USED as political fodder and ammunition for political activists with anti-religious and immoral agendas seeking to undermine the appointed roles and duties God has dictated for his True Church??
Really?

The ways that political activists of all persuasions use to manipulate historical events to suit their own purposes and agendas in this day and age is truly astounding.

Well, this bit about Pope Joan, is an old, old controversy that won’t go away. Vigorous denial seems to just cement the “facts” in the minds of many. It crops up again periodically just like the claims that Shakespeare didn’t write all those plays and sonnets. The History Channel has a lot of similar goodies about ancient space travelers starting people on earth. (Halos are just reminiscent of space helmets, etc.) Don’t take it seriously; it’s entertainment.
