New US Bishop: Atlanta Auxiliary

This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Bishop-elect David P. Talley as an Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta, Georgia, USA and titular bishop of Lambaesis.

Here is bit of information about Bishop-elect Talley

A native of Columbus, Ga., Talley will be ordained on April 2 at the Cathedral of Christ the King.

He will continue to serve as pastor of Saint Brigid until his ordination. Talley was raised a Southern Baptist and converted to Catholicism. He studied at Auburn University and the University of Georgia. He worked as a caseworker for abused and neglected children in Fulton County before deciding to become a priest.

Here is some more information about the bishop-elect. It is from two years ago, when he received an award from Catholic Charities

Monsignor Talley attended Auburn University where he earned a degree in philosophy and became a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He later earned a clinical Master of Social Work from the University of Georgia while working with Fulton County’s Division of Family and Children’s Service victims of child abuse and neglect.

After discerning a call to the priesthood, Monsignor Talley was ordained in 1989 after graduating from the St. Meinrad School of Theology. In 1997, he earned a doctorate in Canon Law at the Gregorian University, in Rome. As a priest of Atlanta, Monsignor Talley has worked in various parishes and with the Disabilities Ministry of the Archdiocese. He has also served as Vocations Director, Chancellor and Judicial Vicar and is currently the pastor at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lilburn.

Monsignor Talley has been a determined advocate for Social Justice and supportive of our Catholic Charities programs in many ways. He has personally coordinated meetings between our Executive Management team, Immigration, Village of St. Joseph Counseling, and Social Justice staff and his parish. As a result of this collaboration, Monsignor Talley has offered a future permanent office for several of our staff at his parish location in Lilburn - the first direct parish support of our services in this manner. We hope to model this unique partnership in other parishes throughout the Archdiocese to accommodate our growth.

Monsignor David Talley will be a wonderful addition to the College of Bishops and to the Archdiocese of Atlanta! He is a deeply spiritual man and pastorally well-attuned. He has special interest in the catechesis of children – particularly those who are mentally, physically, and emotionally challenged as exhibited by his active involvement in Catholic Social Services.

But his appointment is bitter-sweet … since he is currently my pastor at St. Brigid! May God always bless you and keep you, Monsignor David!
