This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Bishop-elect José Arturo Cepeda Escobedo as Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit, Michigan, USA and titular bishop of Tagase.

He was born in Mexico and had been serving as a priest in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas.

He will be the youngest USA bishop when consecrated on 5 May, just 10 days before he turns 42. He will be the 9th youngest bishop worldwide.

Wonderful news! We heard about this at the morning mass when one of the priests added “bishop Arturo” to the list of bishops we prayed for, much to our confusion.

What a change for Bishop-designate Cepeda! From warm San Antonio weather to snowy Detroit in late April. Yeek. One of the students here at the seminary told me they presented Bishop-designate Cepeda with three gifts at the press conference: a “welcome to Detroit” book, a season pass to the Detroit Institute of Art, and a funny looking hand tool he couldn’t figure out the use for. It turned out to be an ice scraper for his car.
