This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Bishop-elect Lawrence T. Persico as the new Bishop of Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. He replaces the retiring Bishop Donald Walter Trautman.

Bishop-elect Persico had been serving as a Priest in the diocese of Greensburg.

Bishop-elect Lawrence T. Persico says he doesn’t bring any preconceived plans to his new job as leader of the Catholic Diocese of Erie.
“I come with only one agenda, and that is to share with you my faith in Jesus Christ,” Persico said.
Mark Borowy, an Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church member who was attending Mass at the cathedral, said word of the bishop-elect “spread like wildfire” Tuesday morning at Erie Insurance, where Borowy works.
He said people began doing Internet searches to learn about Persico. Borowy said he eventually heard that the monsignor is both a “pretty quiet” and a “nice” gentleman.
Persico, who took as his motto “Truth in Charity,” said he was eager to begin getting to know the people and priests of the Erie diocese. He described his leadership style as “collaborative” and said he was eager to listen and learn.
“I ask for the people of the diocese of Erie to pray for me that I may be a good shepherd, so that together we may be effective in helping to build the kingdom of God here in the diocese of Erie,” he said.
