Bishop-elect Coerver has been my pastor for six years. Here are a few highlights:
  1. Oftentimes, he will incorporate catechesis into his homilies.
  2. He emphasizes confession. Lines on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings are often two hours long.
  3. During Mass, he prefers to use Eucharistic Prayer I, III, or IV.
  4. If Mass lasts over an hour (which at St. Rita Mass is often an hour and ten or fifteen minutes), it lasts that long. I always learn something, and many of us stay until the end.
  5. He doesn’t let parishioners walk all over him.
  6. As a man, he is a good positive male role model. His homilies are not the “status quo” either. He likes sports, follows the Church, and takes his vows seriously.
  7. He was a good mentor to three other priests - one who is now the vocations director, and one who is a former Episcopalian.
  8. Like myself, many Catholics drive 20 minutes or more to attend St. Rita. It’s worth it.
Now, I’m a little worried who the diocese is going to appoint to take his place. I hope our new pastor can command a “manly presence”, and I’m not interested in having a “Fr. Nice” or “Fr. Yeah Whatever” as a pastor.
