This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Bishop-elect Jeffrey Marc Montforton as the new Bishop of Steubenville, Ohio, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since Bishop Robert Daniel Conlon was named Bishop of Joliet in Illinois in May 2011.

Bishop-elect Montforton is a priest of the Detroit Archdiocese and recently completed a 6 year term as Rector of Sacred Heart Seminary.

He is an Excellent, WONDERFUL priest. Steubenville is very lucky!!

On the down side, after he completed his term at as rector of our Seminary, he had been named as the pastor of a nearby parish. Good friends there were really excited over their new pastor, so there will be some disappointment at losing him so soon 😦

Am I reading it right that he just was appointed to that parish less than two months ago? That is pretty soon.

It’s good to hear of good priests becoming bishops, though. 🙂

Back in March, when the new bishop of Rockford was announced, it seems Bishop-elect Malloy had been installed as pastor of a parish only six weeks earlier.

I am not sure whether this practice is common, or if it doesn’t reflect an attempt by the new papal nuncio to fill episcopal vacancies a bit quicker than his predecessor. The latter possibility was suggested by your valuable article from Whispers in the Loggia.
