New Vatican statement to address central doctrinal dispute

Well I evangelize by spreading the gospel message to each person that Jesus loves them. I do not attach the requirement of becoming a Catholic.
Telling them that Jesus loves them is only part of the gospel message. Where’s the rest of it?

If I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
1 Cor 13:1

So I tend to lead by quiet example and let everyone decide from there. My words will mean nothing.
That’s insufficient… how do people know that you are not merely a good humanitarian?

What? Does this mean we are going to hell if we are not actively spreading our faith? I would rather lead by example of living it than preaching it with nothing to back it up.
I am sure that it is not obligating all men to go out and preach on the nearest corner. I think it is saying that the spreading of the Catholic faith by Catholics is necessary. The Catholic Church is true therefore it is not enough to be a Jew or a Muslim or even a protestant. We hope for the spread of the Church to all corners of the earth. Does that mean you must go out and preach with words? No. What it means is that we should be open with our faith. Live it. If someone asks about it then share.

All,

The catechism makes it clear we are to evangelize by word and deed. 👍

"Lay people also fulfill their prophetic mission by evangelization, “that is, the proclamation of Christ by word and the testimony of life.” For lay people, "this evangelization . . . acquires a specific property and peculiar efficacy because it is accomplished in the ordinary circumstances of the world."
  • This witness of life, however, is not the sole element in the apostolate; the true apostle is on the lookout for occasions of announcing Christ by word, either to unbelievers . . . or to the faithful. (CCC 905, italics added)

The words that speak loudest can sometimes be the ones we never speak.

Is there really a central doctrinal dispute here? Or is the headline writer just a bit excitable?

If somebody asks me what I believe I will answer. Otherwise I will not initiate conversations on such matters.

Quite sad, really. Apparently, the good news is not worth the trouble of actually sharing it with others unless, of course, poked and prodded for it first.

My thought is that there are some people we don’t want telling others about their beliefs. Those people that publicly speak out about how they think that “choice” is only a matter of conscience. Or that homosexual marriage is ok. Or women should be priests. These people give a false idea of what the Catholic belief is.

So yes silence is sometimes better for the faith.

But if you follow the teachings of the church and are a good example of those teachings then even without words you are evangelizing. Actions sometimes are more powerful then words. Words should follow the actions.

It is a very big issue. Religious relativism is a severe problem right now.
Being a problem does not necessarily equate to being a central doctrinal dispute. (Sexual activity by priests was, and to some extent still is, a significant problem, but that doesn’t mean there is a “central doctrinal dispute” involved.) Doctrine in this area seems pretty well established, and I really don’t see anything new in the document released today. Maybe that’s why they just titled it a “Note” rather than anything more formal or higher-profile.

LET THE PURGINGS BEGIN!
I didn’t see a call for purgings, or any particularly strong language. Then again, that link is just the English summary, not the full text.

Words without charity are meaningless. It does not then follow that charity neccesitates the absence of words. This passage is not meant to be a commentary on the uselessness of language. It simply means that we need to put our money where our mouth is (i.e. live what you believe).

Of course, being a good witness is key, but it does not have to be a *silent *witness. As Pope Paul VI said, “people listen more readily to witnesses than to teachers, and if they do listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” This does not mean we stop teaching, but it means that we must back up what we teach through the way we live our life.

It seems there was alot of “hype” about the forthcoming statement.

But now that it has been issued, there has not been much talk about it.

One writer wrote that it was a bit “confusing.”

I have not read it in its entirety. Were there any surprises or was it confusing in any way?
