To tell you the truth, I don’t remember - just sticking toothpicks in the herring jar and eating them. And I think it was “Noon Hour” herring.
I have had herring, alone, and I don’t know…it’s kind of plain…it needs something…like scallions, crackers and cream cheese.🙂 I may consider it–thank you for the idea!

Funny everyone mentions cream cheese… I was just about to suggest one of our favorite appetizers down here on the Gulf Coast: cream cheese smothered in Pickapeppa steak sauce. If you’ve don’t know what that is, see this: pickapeppa.com/

In the unfortunate absence of Pickapeppa, use A1. Or maybe some raspberry chipotle sauce over brie. Mmm. Cheese. :bowdown2:

Hey WG,

I know you are in the U.S, but I’m sure you have a similar store to this one.

We had a bunch of these on Friday (I only managed to get one of the duck spring rolls on Sat morning cause no meat on Friday, and they were good! - try and find some duck spring rolls!! :D), and they are perfect:

In Jesus Christ,

Mini hot dogs (smoky joes?) simmered in BBQ sauce are always polished off in our house. —KCT

Mini duck rolls–MS? That sounds…mmmmm good!😃 I have no clue however where I’d get these. I have a giant Publix (very large grocery chain in Florida) near where I live–and I’m hoping that I can get some gourmet things there today.

I better get a move on it though!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!🙂

If dh doesn’t want the baked potato bar cause it may be too filling, try this…get those frozen fries shaped like waffles - waffle fries - bake them off and top them with seasoned taco meat, cheese, salsa, sour cream, etc. You could use refried beans too. This way instead of committing to a big baked potato you can just pop these in your mouth. Slice up some scallions to go on top too.

You could very well be a cooking genius…! I love this idea…I will try this…sour cream (lite) on the side, with some cheddar cheese, etc…to put on top-I love it! My husband has disappeared…not sure to where…I think he is buying fertilizer…he said something about that earlier…and I’m waiting for him to return so we can get our shopping underway already!🤷

Your husband sounds like mine. When things get busy, he suddenly remembers another chore that must be done immediately that has nothing whatsoever to do with the upcoming event! :rotfl: Gotta love 'em.

I enjoy simple things. Salads, tiny sandwiches, olives on a stick with some meat and cheese. I like the fancy things too, but I can’t make them. 😉 …Although you could certainly try heated bread with cheese and garlic. In some countries, they enjoy fondue - special kind of cheese, melted, sometimes with pineapple or other such. Can’t go wrong with baked potatoes, either. Or you can try some Greek tzatziki. Other things… don’t know, stuffed tomatoes or paprikas? Though you’d have to look up some stuffing on the Internet, I don’t really know any recipe by heart. What else… Ah. My step-father’s sister makes great ham rolls, though I can’t say what exactly is in the stuffing except tons of garlic. 😃 Generally, stuffed things tend to look good and taste good. 😃

LOL–I needed a laugh today…I’m feeling a bit down…not sure why.🤷

Yes…I’m like…why are you fertilizing the lawn TODAY? Whatever lol;) He’s like…it has to be done! ha

Yummy! You guys aren’t helping my new weight loss goals one bit. 😛

We’re doing wings, spicy and mild, along with the usual celery sticks and ranch dressing dip. I’m also thinking about putting together some stuffed jalapenos. I did some for Christmas Eve for the first time, and they were real easy and tasty. Just hollow out the inside of each pepper (wear gloves when you’re doing this), then stuff with cream cheese and a baby shrimp. Wrap the whole lot of them in foil (I did about 15 or so), then set on the grill for about 20 minutes (you can bake them too if your weather is not agreeable). I was afraid the cheese would just ooze out of the peppers, but they actually held up real nice, and the pepper was cooked all the way through too.

I also have a jar of “Texas caviar” given to me by one of my CCD students for Christmas. It’s some sort of black eyed pea salsa thingie.

Queso is real good too, put it in the crockpot on warm and keep the bowls and chips right next to it for folks to serve themselves.

I’ve got hummus to set out with whole-wheat crackers, bagel chips, and carrots for dipping. I’ve also bought two different cheeses- one sharp cheddar, one Stilton with cranberries- that could also go with the crackers. Nothing too fancy, but we’re just having another couple over for dinner and probably card games. 🙂

I love the baked potato bar idea. I might have to use that next year.

We really like deviled eggs, sardine dip, chips and salsa, egg rolls, French bread with laughing cow cheese, um… I cannot think of anything else.

We always eat a big dinner on NYE we always buy at least one live lobster and let it crawl around on the floor for the little kids to be entertained with. Then we cook it and eat it:crying:

Now we eat more crab legs than lobster because they have more meat and more flavor. We will also have a salad, bread and lots of desert.

If we were to stay up late we would make all those appetizers, but we have had very little sleep since midnight mass on Christmas so we are going to bed early.

PS: Has anyone seen the new National Treasure? Is it good? :yup::nope:

I gave up the idea of dieting until Jan 2 after I gain 10lbs eating all that good food. 😉 The problem is my dad is the BEST cook and we always have the most delicious dinners, but I cannot survive (without being a grump) all day without breakfast and lunch so I have to skip my dad’s delicious dinners.🤷

Agreed. IMO there’s no point trying to diet between Christmas and New Year. The best I can do is portion control. 🤷
