New York bishops will not deny Communion to pro-abortion politicians

These words are from one bishop. And he does admit some bishops will deny communion to such potiticians, so what he says is not about “the bishops of New York.” I don’t think he can speak for anyone but himself. He has the reputation of a liberal bishop, which I think should be taken into account.

The bishops of New York State will not deny Holy Communion to politicians who support abortion and same-sex marriage, according to Bishop Howard Hubbard of Albany.

“Some bishops have done that but not all bishops have done that,” he said. “Quite frankly, there is a disagreement among bishops about using the communion line as a place for a confrontation. And I don’t think that the bishops of New York State feel that’s appropriate.”

This issue has been a scandal for far too long. Bishops and priests have allowed many who call themselves Catholics to fall further into sin by placing the Body and Blood of Our Lord on the tongues or hands of public figures who support legislation that promotes abortion. We profane the sacrament and send a misleading signal to the laity. This is not just a matter of the individual’s conscience.

I have heard many condemn the Church for the ease with which some public figures are granted annulments or can trumpet their Catholic Faith while undermining Church teachings regarding abortion, homosexual lifestyle, euthanasia, and sins against the embryo.We are not free to judge another, but we are called to correct (in charity) our brothers and sisters when they endanger their own souls and those of others.

The politician or anyone who is in public life representing themselves as Catholic while promoting laws that conflict with Church teaching should be excommunicated for their good and the good of all the Church. This is long overdue. Perhaps a visit from the bishop or their pastor for holy conversation on the teachings of the Church would be in order. This could be a very private meeting in the interest of fostering the faith of the individual.

Imagine if a Catholic who had promoted pro-abortion legislation before the 1960’s approached the communion rail. Courage in spreading the Gospel of Christ and building His Body is what is called for. Our bishops and many clergy are far too comfortable in America, while their colleagues in other countries are in prison or martyred for the Faith.
