The Diocese of Rockville says it has a long-standing policy against protests during anthems
A Catholic diocese in suburban New York has issued a warning to its three high schools that students and spectators cannot kneel or otherwise protest when the national anthem is played before games and other school events.

Newsday reports the Diocese of Rockville Centre sent out the directive this week. The diocese says it has a long-standing policy against protests during the anthem.

I have no problem with this.
The kids are representing the school and the diocese, and if this is the policy, it should be followed.

Protests should be on your “own time”, not when you are representing someone else.

During the gulf war I sat down during the pledge of allegiance and nobody cared. Nowadays, I see it as nationalistic and idolatrous along with this anthem worship. I’d tell my kid to kneel if he wants. There’s nothing sacred about an English drinking song with pro-war lyrics.

If you want to honor the troops, don’t send them off to kill and be killed.

ETA: Actually on second thought, I’d never let my kid play football. Too dangerous.

It is their rules. If the diocese does not want the students of their schools to be offensive to others, that is a reasonable policy. My own local school has similar rules in place, even though other schools do not. For example, when a student is awarded a prize at some competition from the school, clapping is allowed, but yelling and screaming is not. Why? So as not to offend those who did not win, or rub it in.
