New york times poll proves revealing

The NYT/CBS poll is one of several that are accurately and scientifically conducted according to guidelines developed by statisticians and polling groups such as Gallup over the years. You don’t have to poll millions of people to get an accurate cross-sampling of opinions. The election polls, for example, very accurately predicted the outcome of the last presidential election.

Once again, people who don’t like the results of polls are blaming the messenger.

One conclusion from the NYT/CBS poll was how much people trusted their local priests. An article I read recently described one priest’s opinion that Catholics in the US are more and more concentrating on life in their own parishes and trying to isolate themselves from the scandals and imbroglios in the church at large. The results of this poll would appear to support this interpretation.

I agree with that assessment.To folks from parishes with priests who are…well…trusted priests… this scandal seems so other-worldly and almost like a fable,a fictional novel(would that it were;or that it was just a bad dream).Our priest addressed the situation head on in his homily today and said that he felt that this horror show is preceeding a windstorm of the Holy Spirit that will rip through the Church and the Remnant Faithful and bring about a cleansing and spiritual renewal and that we will emerge more humble and Christlike from this Trial.We must pray for the victims and offer reparations and also pray and do penance on behalf of the victimizers that they be reconciled to God,after Caesar has dealt with them.

Like so many other polls, this one should not have been taken because all it measures is peoples’ perceptions, not reality. Then there are Catholics, and then there are “Catholics”, and there didn’t seem to be any distinction between them in the poll-taking. Someone might claim to be Catholic but has not darkened the church doors in years. How could he possibly know what the church is doing to correct the problem when not even the NYT knows?

Thank you Sedonaman! :flowers: Points well taken on the slant of the NYT! As good Catholics, we should not support this rag. They definitely have an agenda to discredit the Catholic Church and seem to be getting help from some “catholics” who are weak in their faith. We have an obligation to know the truth and speak out against evil wherever and whenever it presents itself.

The only approval rating that counts is whether God approves. The Church is not a democracy it is a monarchy. The King has placed his steward at the head of the Church on earth and he has my support and obediance.

The way the secular world is these days a low approval rating for the Pope might be better than a high one.

You’ve hit on something here. Truth is more often than not the inverse of popular opinion, so the media like the NYT provides a valuable service: they are what I call THOPPers: to arrive at truth THink OPPosite of what they say.

Very true! If the world hates the Catholic Church so much, there must be something thre that Satan just cannot stand! I personally know of a few people who awakened to the one true church just because of curiosity about the media attacks! They thought similarly that there must be a reason why there is so much hostility and decided to see for themselves.
