New york times poll proves revealing

What I found revealing was the amount of work in front of the bishops and parishes to educate these folks about the church.

The poll was conducted by phone in conjunction with CBS News, and NY Times readership had nothing to do with it. There is no bias. Read the poll questions, and look at the description of how the poll was conducted. The only potential bias I see is that they only called landline phones—most of the people I know don’t even have those anymore!
Check out the age distribution–lots of young people–an excellent distribution, also 50% earned under $50.000 and about 50% over, allowing for 10% who refused to say. Even split between men and women. Many of the questions divided between Catholics and non-Catholics, and also split between those who attend mass once/week and those who don’t.

The science of polling today is really a science. Also note that many trusted their parish priest–overall pretty favorable, I’d say.

Regarding JR’s comment, I feel that the results of such an extensive scientific poll is useful information for the general public.

Seems to me that many Mass-attending Catholics I know have many, if not most, of the opinions reflected in the poll. Whenever the abuse issue comes up, there are always those who say priests should be allowed to marry, and express opinions in line with the poll. Few really ever say much about Benedict XVI. And, it’s true that Bill Donohue is biased - everybody knows that - it is his job as an advocate for the Church. His opinions need to be weighed like those of anyone else. Some think he does a good job; others don’t.
Why discredit a man whose job as you say is as an advocate for the Church you profess to be a member of? As an advocate for the Church, you are discounting his opinion for what reason? As for the NY Times, I repeat this rag has villified the Catholic Church at every opportunity. Those in charge definitely have an anti-Catholic agenda. I would never waste my time reading this paper or expounding on the merits of whatever they come up with. There are way too many good solid news sources available, unless you think that the Catholic News Agencies are way too biased to be counted as worthy of your readership. 🤷

Donohue’s conduct discredits him (as do your words for that matter). If as you say, the NYT is a rag, then Donohue is incompetent for based a press release on its content. Beyond that, he presented a biased, skewed and intellectually dishonest version of that content. (see my previous post in the thread)

If you want to see a balanced reporting of that content by a Catholic source click here. They presented the key findings from the poll, good and bad, so that folks choosing to use information from it would know what sort of well they were drawing water from. That’s responsible advocacy.

demonstrate that Donohue is a boil that the church should lance. It’s a toss up between Donohue and Bishop Richard Williamson as to which one puts a less attractive face on Catholicism.

Not a surprising post, since you reject the Catholic faith, of course you will complain about Catholic Bishops and advocates!🤷

I don’t think I have discredited Mr. Donohue. He is an advocate and is doing his job, which is defending a position. Everybody who publishes opinions has his or her own views. When it comes to matters of opinion, I weigh all of the arguments and opinions from whatever source which includes consideration of the interest and motives of the source itself. I attempt to be like a good judge in a lawsuit considering witness testimony. It often turns out that there is some truth in what most say; the problem is sorting it all out reasonably and logically.

Are you really saying that rejecting Bill Donohue’s opinions constitute rejecting the Catholic Faith? If so, I find that astounding!

Weighing things out with your faulty logic has led you out of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic faith. Not very reasonable IMHO.🤷

There is your faulty logic and reasoning in action! Of course NOT!!!

Good show, Non.

Bill Donohue’s insulting YouTube clips against the Irish victims of priest sex abuse speak for themselves.

No one has ever accused Mr Donahue of infallibility or especially impeccability or even sensitivity but I have much more respect for someone who actually defends the Body of Christ, rather than whinging or wringing their unblemished hands about how Catholicism is being villified everywhere then attacking another Catholic’s character or his sometimes obnoxious approach for actually DOING something…What are WE doing except complaining to other Catholics and non-Catholic Christians? At least he’s out there warts and all.Whether you like him or not that’s really tough beans because PLENTY of Catholics including THIS one are grateful for his efforts. If you’re NOT a Catholic I could care less than what you think of the man.

Well, then you should complain to the NY TIMES for publishing it, i.e . they are rather sloppy when supplying the facts. 😃
Why would I complain?

They printed what they printed and explained it.

Nothing sloppy in that.

It’s what they do.

🤷

My question is why was it necessary to do this survey? What good does it serve? How is this a public service that the media is to provide for the community?

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
Of course not. Survey companies are out to make money like any other business and if others like the NYT are willing to pay them then they’ll survey people about anything.
Not forgetting the poll size. 1079.

Hardly scientific or exhaustive.

🤷
I sold my statistics textbook, but that looks like a pretty good size actually. If they’ve eliminated biases and checked the data to see if it follows a normal distribution (given that it’s an opinion poll, I’d say that it probably is), then the poll is probably good (I didn’t check, but it’s probably 19/20 on a two sided confidence interval).

You’re even starting to sound a bit like Donohue, bluster and all. Have you actually listened to what he said in those recordings? If not, I’ll excuse your defense of him for not knowing what you’re defending. OTOH, if you are defending those statements of his, then come out from behind your keyboard and repeat them to actual abuse victims-you want to do something-start with that. If you can’t repeat them to an abuse victim you have no business posting his commentary anywhere.

He misleads, misquotes and bullies-if that is the best the Catholic church can do for a defender, then it is in sad shape. Personally I think it has more able defenders, that why I’m holding out for a higher standard.👍

I wasn’t referring to specific incidences of his personal boorishness and you are quite literate enough to realize that. You are making a personal ad hominum attack accusing me of bluster and comparing me to a personality that you, historically, specifically and particularly find odious and repulsive;how much more personal can you get?.
I refuse to sink to your level and reply in a similar manner.Personal attacks upon other posters are against fora rules and I am taking measures to ensure that they are dealt with
Something like,“Mommy,mommy!!!Non Serviam’s teasing me,make him/her stop”!!!
Something kinda like that anyways.😉

Here is the deal folks. You either discuss the article or I will close this thread and ban some people. This is becoming a high maintenance discussion, which is unnecessary when dealing with adults. Do not discuss each other. Do not make comments about each other. Do not point fingers at each other.
