Why was it covered up then, for the sake of the church.? Instead of all this bs why doesn’t the church stand up and admit where they had fault?
Again, who did the covering? Someone within the Church, ie, priests and bishops? Sure. But let’s not use blanket statements that lead to speculation that the Vatican or pope is somehow the culprit. Have you actually read what Benedict has to say about all this?

If you actually look at several of these cases, bishops wrote letters to then Cardinal Ratzinger when he was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, where such sexual predators are dealt with. In several instances he took as many as seven years to defrock some of these guys while they were free to roam and molest. In others he received multiple letters over years from bishops begging over and over to laicize and kick out these bums. In the situation with Father Stephen Kiesle, a sex predator/molestor, Ratzinger/Benedict urged “due caution” and consideration for “good of the universal Church” before laicizing this creep. There are several of these instances and coverups are obvious.

I share your distrust and disgust for the NY Times but I will say the media must play a role in all of this to keep the Church honest. Do we think honestly that things would’ve changed if they hadn’t gotten caught and held to the fire? Sometimes an outside source is used by God to affect positive changes. Now the pope is enthusiastically sending a memo to all bishops that they are mandated to turn in molesting priests and things must be dealt with more swiftly.
I have no tolerance for it either as this sort of thing has affected my family when we were JW’s, but who did the covering up? How do you know that Benedict knew about these things? Because a reporter from the NY Times not familiar with the workings of the Church structure says so? The Catholic Church is not a corporation with the pope acting as CEO. He can’t “order” bishops on what to do. That is not his role.

There has absolutely been some horrendous handlings of these cases by bishops and the priests guilty of these charges are, to use Benedicts own description, filth. But do you think the Vatican would WANT these vile creatures preying upon others by trying to cover things up? Many of these cases took place decades ago when society, I think it would be fair to say, had no idea how to handle these dispicable actions, especially within the Church. We know better now. No “rehabilitation” can heal these wretches. There is no doubt that Church is learning a painful lesson in all this, but before fingers are pointed at the Vatican, let’s make sure we let ALL the facts come out. And so far, there has not been any evidence showing that Benedict, then Ratzinger, acted with malice.

There are more sexual scandal attacks on the Pope today. I was going online when I just found this is the news. "Pope under fire for transfer, letter on sex abuse ". Just wanting to know what some people think about this?
As usual, the lame stream media got it wrong. As a result of sloppy reporting and the (intentional?) mistranslation of the documents That story is completely incorrect and was shown to be so several days ago. I wonder when the New York, Ap, Yahoo news, and others are going to print retractions and corrections. I wouldn’t hold my breath.

The priest had actually been suspended from ministry and the case had been turned over to the police decades before. The issue before the commission (Cardinal Ratzinger wasn’t even in charge when this was sent up to the congregation) wasn’t the suspension of the priest at all which, as I stated above, had already been done decades before this.

Here are the actual facts: calcatholic.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?id=959df523-e858-4928-8208-27065d06811e

Isn’t the Pope head of the Church?
Well Tweety Christ is head of the Church. But yes the Catholic Church teaches the Pope is the earthly visible human head of the Catholic Church on earth. Infallible when teaching doctrine concerning faith and morals.

There has been no proof that Benedict covered up this abuse or others. If the priest was no longer allowed to be around parishes or children, whether he was defrocked or not would not affect him to go outside of the church and continue his behavior.

As a poster in another thread said many Catholics don’t believe in the Real Presence and I think from many posts here that many Catholics are looking for a reason to justify some anger they have towards the Church. They judge and convict a person without real proof, believe the media and seem to enjoy the gossip about the Holy Father. You all are the judge and jury, hopefully none of you will be accused of this.

These events happened years before Benedict was the Pope, I am sure that you have read statements from the Vatican but would rather believe a rag newspaper.

If I believed that Benedict and most of the Bishops covered up all this abuse I would be leaving the Church. My question to Catholics is why stay? I am sure that any other denomination is free from abuse and pure. I don’t deny that some Bishops and priests were involved in abuse or a cover up, but how can you condemn the whole Church because of a few. This abuse covers up to 50 years ago. Most of the priests are long since dead.

Catholics are giving the protestant posters such pleasure by their comments. And don’t you dare question them about their churches and abuse because then your trying to just cover up our sins. My former church was full of sexual abuse of all kinds, but no one has shown any interest in them.

As Christ said we will be judged as we judge others and I hope everyone is prepared for their judgement.

I don’t understand why anyone would take the word of the media or a person who is anti Catholic without really getting all the facts. It is very easy to accuse someone of something without any truth to back it up and people today live for scandal.

I am sick of all of this. Why don’t all you righteous people start investigating other denominations (they hide things very well, don’t keep records), schools, scouts and all organizations dealing with children and teens. Where is the media when it comes to schools? The worst of all and nothing is done. No lawsuits there. I guess when there is no hope of financial gain it is not worth going after.

😦 Just because a priest could have continued his behavior outside, that doesn’t make it alright to keep him within. And a priest could not have continued his behavior if the policy had been all along to pursue locking him up behind bars.

I don’t believe anyone is attempting to justify anger. And God is ultimately judge and jury as to salvation not any of us.

Leave the Church? I know you understand the Church teaches “the sacramental bond of belonging to the Body of Christ that is the Church, conferred by the baptismal character, is an ontological and permanent bond which is not lost” by any reason.

These acts are deplorable whether in the Catholic Church, a Protestant church, or a school, scouts or any organization. No one is suggesting otherwise. But we are talking about the Catholic Church which lays claim as the one and only true Church. With Apostolic successors who should know better. If they know to teach the sanctity of life, they ought to know to protect children from abuse.

Peace and God bless you.

This is incorrect because cases of pedophile priests were handled by local bishops and not the congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (only very few cases were referred to the Vatican), i.e., in the year 2001 all cases were referred to the CDFand since then pedophile priests have been dealt with much more swiftly (Pope Benedict actually reformed the process for handling such cases).

No, actually Jesus is the Head of His Church. The pope is leader among equals, the bishops. He is not all powerful as many make him out to be.

His role is perfectly illustrated in the writings of the council of Jerusalem. James and others wanted circumcision and Jewish customs to be adhered to before becoming Christian. Peter disagreed and spoke in disagreement, and then James and the council followed his lead. But ultimately it was the college of bishops of the times, the Apostles, who collectively followed Peter.

This will serve to purify His Church; no matter how painful this will be His Church will survive and prosper by spreading His Word. The Catholic Church will get smaller because of this, but only temporarily; “…and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”

The chair of Peter will survive and a successor will be seated, and I shall follow Him and His Church!!!:grouphug:

And peace and love to you. Your post is right on. Anyone who performs these evil things need to be thrown in jail. No matter Catholic, etc.etc.etc. The coverups are as bad. No matter who you are. Do you it was 40 years before I was able to speak of the evil that was done to me and the cover up. Yep and now I will speak of it if it will help anyother victim.

Lapey, you might see his role perfectly illustrated at Jerusalem. But Paul had other ideas at Antioch.

Gal 2:11 But when Cephas was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

Thank you Tweetymom. Sometimes I think the cover ups are even worse if that is possible. I can not dare imagine the pain you suffered over the course of those 40 yrs from the evil perpetrated upon you. Someone posted they are sick of all of this. But my heart instead weeps when I think about such evil acts. God bless you Tweetymom for your courage. May His love always shine upon you. Peace. :hug1:

Why is it you feel the need to correct me, a catholic, or the Church you claim to be a member every time you post. I wasn’t even talking to you.

The statement is baseless in the argument I made unless you feel the need to discredit the primacy of the pope. Which being you are a Catholic would be considered heresy.

Sorry Lapey. I wasn’t aware only the people we are talking to can respond. Peace.

That’s not the point. You are most often talking against the Church and fellow Catholics, very often me. With all of the headlines of scandal, whether warrented or not, are you embarrassed that you are Catholic?

I am not. Am I embarrassed at what has taken place? Yes, even angry. But still proud to call myself Catholic. I know that His Church will be purified through this; I know His Spirit will guide Mother Church into the future. I will be one of His deacons working in communion with His church and therefore in communion with Him!

Reading the various posts condemning or chastising the Holy Father for his supposed sins of ommission or commission gives me to wonder if people know the meaning of the mortal sin of calumny.

May the Lord strengthen His Vicar against his enemies.
