Average weekday circulation at U.S. newspapers fell 2.6 percent during the six month-period ending in September in the latest sign of trouble in the newspaper business, an industry group reported Monday.

Sunday circulation also fell 3.1 percent at newspapers reporting to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, according to an analysis of the data by the Newspaper Association of America.

We stopped getting our local paper a few months ago when they more than doubled their rates. We gat local info from the TV news, the local cable access channel and the free papers that are in town. We can also get local info from the newspaper’s website- they post all the local stories.

For international news we just use the internet and my husband’s office gets the NY Times.

I always hated the ink on my fingers fron newsprint anyway.

Cancelled my (short) subscription to the Palm Beach Post about a decade ago when two cartoons ran near each other on the editorial pages.

One compared the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the killer of the Ramsey child and OJ Simpson.

The other compared Republicans in Congress to Saddam’s Republican Guard.

The Palm Beach Post is also on 24 hour watch for any news which reflects badly on Christians.

I would like to have a local paper. But I’m not going to put up with that.

Really, I think this has more to do with so many newspapers being online nowadays, and the quick easy access to news through TV and internet news sources than anything else.

I stopped getting the paper years ago. I have gotten all my news from radio and internet for quite a while. Why pay for a local reprint of the AP? It is a complete waste. Newspapers are dead, they just don’t know it yet. -That from a former paperboy. The older generation will sustain them out of habit for a while, but they really started dying when the little papers were all bought out by big groups like Media General. I anticipate their demise with a certain glee, like the demise of the big music labels, because I know it means better things to come.

Why get the paper??? It’s what i can read online and on the internet atleast i can get the other opinions and facts…Plus i feel like I am doing my part in helping the environment. Think of all the less paper in use!

Probably folks have found better things to line their bird cages with and train their puppies on 🙂

Online news, except in rare instances, simply reproduces (or sometimes digests it first) the traditional sources of news.

I do not subscribe to a newspaper, but I do glance at the online edition of my local paper. And I frequently read (online) investigative articles or analysis from the major dailies. As well as AP, Reuters, BBC, AFP, etc articles.

Newspapers continue to have a vital role to play, a role that television and radio haven’t tried (or been able) to fill.

They are really desparate. I subscribe to the Sunday edition. The paper called yesterday and said they were going to give me a free subscription to the daily paper for six months. Since I can get to everything of interest to me at their web site without having to worry with disposing of old newspapers, I declined their offer. Since their ad revenue is dependent on circulation, I can see their dilemma, though.

I like newspapers (and books), they can be read in places where technology doesn’t reach (or at least reach well). On public transport, in the pub, and in the bathroom 😃
