I agree with you that the vast majority of mentally ill people have and never will harm anyone. However, as a society, we do place constraints on mentally ill people owning firearms, and I do believe that the person that is single most responsible for what happened is the mother, who decided a good way to bound with her child was through playing around with firearms that were capable of killing twenty some odd seven year olds.The vast majority of “mentally ill” people have never harmed anyone. Mental health professional can’t tell you with any meaningful certitude which mentally ill people are going to harm someone. I’m not sure how you expect the mother, who’s not a mental health professional, to determine if her son is dangerous enough that he shouldn’t have access to weapons in the house. You may as well expect newspaper publishers to make sure the stories they report have no potential for causing a riot and make them liable if it does.
