NFP "failure" question

Just a quick survey type question –

Has anybody here had NFP “fail” on them? I don’t mean that you had sex on a questionable day that probably was safe, but you knew that you were taking a chance – I mean, all signs and symptoms said that you ovulated 5 days before having sex, but you still got pregnant.

But just to clarify - which method of NFP are you talking about?

My only comment is that the sympto-thermal method instructs you to wait 3 full days after the *confirmed *and *consistent *temperature rise of at least 0.4 degF before fully assuming you are in the luteal phase. Most questionable days occur in the transition from phase 1 to phase 2… this is speaking from the sympto-thermal perspective.

So… since you are obviously asking about after ovulation… going from phase 2 to phase 3 (luteal phase)… I would recommend looking into the sympto-thermal method if you are having concerns about that transition with another method.

I made up a hypothetical to make my point. My scenario is not meant to describe an actual event, as I’m not turning to the internet for medical advice.

I was more looking for anecdotal evidence of people who have charted for a long time have a month where the signs were completely misread or unusual “out of the blue”.
 
The technical part of NFP has never failed us. The practice of it has. Which is why we dont practice it any more. We have just decided to let go and let God.
There has never been a greater stress on our marriage than NFP but it has been remarkably accurate.
 
Nope… We use the Sympto-Thermal method as well and it’s always been effective. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone that used NFP correctly and got a surprise baby, actually. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but I don’t know firsthand of anyone that NFP has failed on.

Now, if you ask me how many people I know that were taking the pill/using condoms correctly and got pregnant out of the blue… Well, I’d have to take my shoes off and count on my toes as well 😉

Nope. As has been mentioned, this wouldn’t happen. Intercourse is only resumed by couples not wishing to conceive when all symptoms of fertility have ceased, and infertility is assured. In couples who are spacing children, or who are not looking to completely rule out another pregnancy, they may choose to not follow the ‘rules’ as closely.

NFP is as accurate as the couple using it wish it to be. With informed couples who are highly motivated to avoid a pregnancy at a given time, the ‘failure’ rate is almost non-existent.

yes.

we used billings. there were ZERO symptoms. i was 5 days past the 4 day rule.

pregnant, i took my chart to my nfp instructor who took it to an nfp national symposium. they all agreed we were the real 1% “failure” rate.

they asked my nfp teacher, “How does the couple feel about this?” she said, “they happily accept God’s will.” they were relieved to hear it.

and we still do happily accept… that little one percenter is going to be nine years old in 2 weeks. she’s a pistol, a delight, a puzzle and a comidian. what would we do without her?
 
No, but have only been using NFP for a couple of months.

What you are asking is possible but highly unlikely. My textbook even shows an example of a chart where unintended pregnancy occurred due to “method related” failure. The vast majority of unintended pregnancies while using NFP are user related, but method related unintended pregnancies can happen very rarely.

0 Oopsies.

Over 12 years of marriage. I’d be a satisfied customer, but I didn’t need to buy anything. 😉
 
In my past I was not so educated about church teaching. Had an ABC oopsies, and a NFP “what the heck” baby.

I also had a few weird cycles where I ovulated 5-7 days early, and was able to catch it no problem. I use STM and I’ve been very happy with the results.
 
You laugh, but IMO ‘what the heck’ kids make up more the the large NFP fmily size than ‘oopsies’ do. And that’s a side effect of why NFP isn’t a sin and ABC is: NFP leaves intact God’s “lie detector” regarding the allegedly serious reason. Once you realize the reason isn’t so serious… ‘what the heck?’

But it does most assuredly exist. We were told “God must have wanted you to get pregnant…” (with a wink and a ha ha isn’t that sweet smile - we were NOT amused nor did we think an unintended pregnancy was ‘sweet’) - also my best friend just had her second “oops” pregnancy (using CCL and this is her wording) - they were also told something similar by their coaches “oh, we know you weren’t planning on any more, but God must have had different ideas…”

A method failure rate with NFP does exist. Same with ABC. The only surefire 100% way to not get pregnant is to abstain or removal of the ovaries or testicles.

Wasnt’ saying a failure rate didn’t exist actually making clear that it does exist because on of the other poster said the failure rate was almost “non existent” (granted with caveats - which we followed)- my point was that I have two cases where two couples were using it very conservatively and abstaining for longer periods of time then were indicated necessary and still wound up with unintended pregnancies - not because they ‘fudged’ their dates or anything but because NFP doesn’t work for everyone every time. I’m glad it works for some of those on this site, but as one of the other posters noted, she was also one of the “1%” - and the way you find out it’s not working for you is that you get pregnant.

Maybe. I’ll let you know next week! 😊

Using Creighton model, under a lot stress and double peaked. Even though I suspected a double peak I didn’t realize that a women could go straight from complete dry (0 AD) to peak fertility (8CL), so I’ll let you know what God has in plan when e lets us know!

It’s funny though, we wern’t planning on this but I’m really hoping we are pregnant!

My husband and I take a lot of chances and we haven’t had any surprises. we do have four kids, but each time we knew with all four that we gave God a chance to create life. after 8 years of nfp I can say that a simple cold can delay ovulation by many days. there are a lot of variables but sometimes by we lean best by experience.
