A freind of mine and I were talking about birth control and we came to be discussing the new ovulation tests. Specifically, I believe the Zetek ovulation kit - it is electronic and her GYN told her that although using it wouldn’t be 100% effective - using it may be just as effective, as the pill - as long as intercourse did not occur on the fertile days or as long as condoms or something else was used on those days. (oddly enough this was made to help people become pregnant) For someone that might be looking for a way to do NFP -is this something that anyone has used and is there any reason the Church should have a problem with it (assuming that ABC isn’t used during the few fertile days it gives?) It seems like it would be a lot easier than having to chart every thing etc. - especially for those of us that arn’t regular and have other problems. Please let me know if there is another electronic ovulation test that people use and have had good outcomes with - this one from what I’ve heard and read seems to be the most accurate and it would seem to possibly cut down on the days one would have to abstain.

Just looked it up. Don’t see anything the Church would have a problem with. It’s basically just a higher tech tool for use in NFP.

The Marquette Model of NFP combines the Creighton instructions with an ovulation prediction kit. I suggest you look up the Marquette Model and learn it. You do still need to chart.

Personally, I find that the Billings Method - which doesn’t depend on regularity of cycles but rather on noticing changes in cervical fluid - is the most effective form of NFP. It was begun by a doctor, is widely used around the world and has a 99 percent accuracy rate.

I once tried the Maybe Mom fertility predictor along with Billings (you look for fern-like patterns in saliva using a tiny microscope) thinking that if it was used to predict fertility, that it would also help with NFP. I found the fertility monitor to be very misleading: according to it, I would have been fertile the whole first half of my cycle! Needless to say, I went back to using the Billings method which has worked for me and my husband for nineteen years now, and helped with the spacing of our children.

Hope this helps! God bless!

Every time I look into electronic monitoring, I look closely at the daily/monthly cost and the upfront cost and realize that Billings and other NFP methods fit much better into my budget.

I don’t see that this would be a problem, and may help someone who is just learning NFP (so they could cross-check their fertility signs against the predictor kit) or someone who is postpartum or premenopausal and having a hard time predicting ovulation. That said, part of the appeal of NFP is that its’ free 😃 and those predictor kits cost a pretty penny. In general, NFP is easy enough to use without an electronic aid and I wouldn’t bother with it, but if someone felt more comfortable using one, I’m sure it would be fine.

Other devices…

The babycomp/ladycomp ( i personally have used this one with great success)

Check the family life forum there are threads on both the babycomp and the Ova Cue (the zetek one). Since they are just aides to help monitor fertility signs they are fine to use as a tool to practice NFP.
