For those who attend an ad orientem NO Mass:

When the priest begins the Mass with the sign of the cross and follows with the Confiteor, does he do this from his chair or from the altar?

The reason I ask is the GIRM specifically states that the sign of the cross be done from the chair (50). It does not specify where the Confiteor (or whatever Act of Penitence) should be done.

It would make the most sense to me that after reverencing the altar, the priest would just stay their through the Collect and go to the chair afterwards to sit down.

Thanks,

SC

I believe it is supposed to all be done from the chair. The symbolism, I believe, is supposed to be that for the liturgy of the word, the priest represents God bringing the word to the faithful, and during the liturgy of the Eucharist, the priest represents the people offering sacrifice to God. Therefore, he faces the people during the liturgy of the word(from the chair) and when he offers the sacrifice, he faces ad deum.

well…that makes sense kinda more in the novus ordo…there is no

prayer to enter the santuary like in the tridentine mass among other prayers…BUT

if you think about it the prayers are suppose to be towards God not to the people and then the Scripture be read toward the people

The GIRM is also clear on the Missal not being at the altar until the Offertory. Personally, I’m with you… I think the avoidance of the altar until the Liturgy of the Eucharist (except for the Book of the Gospels being placed on it) is a poor decision in the liturgical reform. It’s an altar of sacrifice, right? And our prayers are to rise like an incense offering before the Lord, right? So it seems just to me that prayers be offered at the altar (ad orientem if possible).

I’m not entirely sure why the reform moved the priest away from the altar. I’d much prefer to see him back there… to see his back when he’s back there. 😉

Please do me a favor: don’t get this or any other Liturgy & Sacraments thread locked or deleted!

Interesting liturgy fact: up until the 2002 revision of the Missal, the entrance rite of the revised order for Mass without a Congregation was considerably more like that of the 1962 Missal! Before the priest ascends to the altar and kisses it (and presumably at the foot of the sanctuary) he and the server would do the Greeting and the Confiteor. Then the priest goes up to the altar and kisses it, then goes to the Missal (at the left side of the altar) to read the Entrance Antiphon. Then the Kyrie, the Gloria, and the Collect.

This was (sadly) changed in the 2002 revision; now Mass without a Congregation looks like Mass with a Congregation.

All of our Masses are ad orientem, and all our priests say these parts standing in front of their chair.

That IS sad. Why did they change it? It’s not like there is a congragation thats going to complain about it;) 🤷 o well!

but I mean it is different…“one has congregation” and the other doesn’t so…it kinda has to be a little bit different doesn’t it???

But it doesn’t have to be as different as it was. A Low Mass in the E.F. with one minister is celebrated the same way as a Low Mass in the E.F. with 100 faithful present, no?
