No Catholic Bibles in Wal-Mart?

Somehow, I doubt many people buy Bibles at Wal-Mart…

I have never checked out the Bible selection at Wal-Mart or Target, but I know that Barnes and Noble and Family Christian Stores both sell Catholic Bibles (and in the case of Family Christian, other Catholic items). I’m able to go to two different Barnes and Noble stores, and their layouts are rather different. I’m not sure who decides on the layouts and where things go, but it doesn’t seem to be at a higher level.

I’m absolutely positive that the Catholic Bibles at the Barnes and Noble stores I went to were right where they belonged - right by other Bibles!!!

Part of the problem is the NAB, which is probably the most awkward translation around. The RSV-Catholic edition–is far better.

Who said you had to get a NAB?? I personally don’t care for the NAB or the RSV-CE, but somehow I doubt Wal-Mart would ever order the Douay-Rheims on my account.
 
while were talking about Bibles - which Catholic version is better? I have two - one is a Good News Translation and I’m not sure what the other one is - both great. Actually, the one what i can’t remember the translation to is closer to mass readings - i believe…not sure though. Both were Gifts!!!😃 guess the people that bought them knew what they were doing!!

But how come BibleGateway.com doesn’t have Catholic translations? Are there Catholic websites that are like BibleGateway that you can use? Its kinda like no CatholicBibles at Walmart - why no Catholic translations here? hmm…

The other translations is probably the NAB, or RSV-CE. In which case both the NAB and RSV-CE are better. The NAB is the closest to the lectionary because the lectionary is the NAB but revised for mass. Bible Gateway doesn’t have Catholic translations because it is Protestant based. I am not aware of any sites like biblegatway, I too would like to know of one.
 
what does NAB or RSV…I’m not sure what you said…stand for?

it has more to do with the distributor that fills their book and newstand which is actually operated somewhat like a concession. The bibles are usually low cost non-copyrighted editions and come packaged with a group of other generic “spiritual” and self help books, packaged according to they titles that generate best sales. Catholic bibles would probably have to be ordered separately, at greater cost, and their distributor would actually have to pay, as the others do, for shelf space. the spacing of books and magazines on the shelves is no accident, they pay for that space as part of their contract, which is why they pay somebody (I used to do this) to come by during the week, before their big shopping days, and rearrange the shelves so the proper products are in their proper places.

this is put out by the American Bible Society, and is cheaper in case lots for churches, but you can order it on line, I think it is abs.org but you may have to search on their name. I have one specifically for teaching in bilingual situations, since the readings are on the same page facing, and it is much easier than flipping back and forth. Not for liturgical use but okay in other settings. be sure to get the blue one (Catholic) not the gold one (non-Catholic) like most of their other “Catholic bibles” which are designated in their catalog with a maltese cross when they have an imprimatur, the deutero-canonical books are at the end of the OT.

LOL. I feel like I should hear you say I woke up from that party last night and looked on the other side of the bed to see a few protestant bibles…:rolleyes:

There’s biblos.com. Not exactly a Catholic website but it does at least have the Douay-Rheims among its translations. Better than biblegateway in that it ALSO has the Latin Vulgate (and I think Greek version as well) if languages are your thing.

LOL… those Protestant Bible Fairies are the same ones who sneak into Wal-Mart at night and take out the Catholic Bibles and replace them with KJV.

Actually all this information on product sales and distribution makes perfect sense as to why Wal-Mart wouldn’t carry the Catholic Bibles… Probably the same reason you don’t see them in motel rooms? The Latin vesion on biblegatways site is the Struttgart version, not approved by the Church

Um… Hold up! :mad:

That’s AWFUL. I believe that had that been me, I would have

    • Complained to the Manager
    • Sent a letter to the corporate Headquarters
    • Told every other person from my church so they could do the same.
    Catholicism? An ALTERNATIVE religion? They gotta be cracky! :mad:

She was the manager. I too was shocked, asked her why? Her response was that they ran out of bookshelf room in the bibles section, and they very rarely sold Catholic bibles so they didn’t have much stock. (A whole bookcase of KJVs & concordances/study aids compared with maybe 3 Catholic bibles.)

This was several years ago, the few missals & Catholic bibles they do have are now back in the bible section.

Welcome to my world down here in the bible belt! Where Baptists & Lutherans outnumber Catholics 30 to 1, it **is **an alternative religion:p

At least the Catholic bibles are back where they should be. 👍

But I would have bugged that manager until it was something they’d dread ever having to deal with later!

e-Sword has the Douay-Rheims version available.
 
I heard of a bookstore that put them in the cult section…:eek:

i dont live anywhere close…but in a religious bookstore in a town near where I live they have a different Catholic section, separate from the Protestant section…but not offensively so I believe…
