Well you may not be poor but if you need a job, here’s what my priest (actually former because I haven’t been back to his parish since) said in April in a homily. His answer to the poor “is to get a job!” Poor market not withstanding apparently.

It’s only wealthy jobs that are in short supply. The service industry is booming. You can work - you just can’t buy that Mercedes, or that mansion - you have to buy a used car, and live in an apartment. Thanks. I’ll be sure to spread the good news to my wealthy neighbors in my condo apt complex who drive the likes of a Toyota, who have been unemployed for mos while watching the values of their homes drop to below what they paid for them after having at one time quaddrupling. Not to mention while credit rates go up, returns on their modest MM or CD accts are barely existent. And pray they don’t get sick and have to go to the dr or get a prescription. All the while the wealthy fat cats were getting tax breaks and living it up. While the Church focuses its energies on abortion, gays, and stem cells. But I’ll assure them blessed are the poor in spirit and it is far easier for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle and in the meantime everything is fine in the universe. And a good thing we’ve added to the deficit by fighting 2 wars for yrs. That keeps less folks looking for work here. What fantasy world do you live in? There is not a single segment of our economy that can be described as “booming.” Yes, the service industry may be less anemic than manufacturing, but it is still anemic.It’s only wealthy jobs that are in short supply. where they have national health care. You live in Ohio. But I guess you could move to Michigan. Is reality any better there? Of course if you’re a Buckeyes fan that might not work out.

I am in the (fortunate) position of being full-time in school, with a low level of debt (most of it I don’t have to pay back yet…sweats in fear), and working full time to pay my bills. My full time position involves intense physical labor which pays much better than say fast food or retail.
There is validity to the point that it is doable in today’s economy. Go to Craig’s List. Any job posting site. There are THOUSANDS in every city. The problem is that the people who got the expensive house and car and racked up a ton of debt in the 90’s thought, like everyone else, it would last forever. Well, my parents are proof that it doesn’t. They filed bankruptcy twice before just letting the bank take everything. In the process they downsized everything and are now renting instead of paying a mortgage, driving a lot less (they moved into town from out in the country) and are now able to make ends meet. Their credit sucks and their standard of living has fallen, but they have done it. Everyone can do it. The problem is that the people who say it’s not possible are living in the dream world where their standard of living is sustainable.
Unfortunately, the way we lived in the '90s is impossible to do today. Insurance is still a burden that many face, but if you can’t afford insurance and incur a major medical bill, guess what? The hospital is willing to absorb a lot of it. My dad recently had pancreatic cancer and survived. My mom was in NO shape to pay for it. They absorbed it. The only reason I can’t apply for that kind of aid is because I’m a student and the world thinks “If you can afford to go to school, you can afford to pay for everything” even though I can’t get a loan and financial aide is the only thing letting me go to school. But I tend to agree with the priest who said “get a job.” A job is a job. If you’ve been unemployed for two years, good luck getting any job outside the service industry. Even a ****** job looks better on that resume than no job at all, especially when you explain that you took the ****** third shift fast food job to help put food on the frikkin table.

On a side note, am I the only OSU student that REALLY hates the Buckeyes and the insane football religiousity of that campus?

Patty, we are some of those awful Evangelical Church in America Lutherans you have heard about. I doubt that a WELS congregationj would hire you even if you went to a WELS seminary, since women have no place in running the affairs of a WELS church. Actually most mainstream non-Catholic churches would welcome your talents, if they had job openings. We had a council meeting yesterday and decided to cut out one phone line and increase the deductable on our insurance to try to keep ahead of the creditors. This goes on and we are a fairly affluent congregation.
I think that in the meantime, doing some volunteer work in your field will do two things: it will keep your skills current, and it will connect you with people who may later be looking to hire someone with a masters degree in theology.

Tough market out there. I can tell you some horror stories about hiring reporters. We would get usually 100-200 resumes for 1 job. a good 50-75 of those would just be immediately thrown in the trash without ever being opened. There simply weren’t the people, time, or inclination to read them all. As for education, I’ve never seen a business that had more nepotism. You better know someone who knows someone.

I propose that all of us - Catholic, Protestant and otherwise - go down on our knees tonight and beseech the Lord God to send Patty Pryor a good job. It worked for me when I was between jobs about 2 years ago. My mother and brothers got a whole lot of people praying for me, and in the worst economic downturn since the great depression, the best job I have ever had simply fell into my lap.
Prayer works, my friends. Let’s do what works. I will be on my knees tonight begging God to send a good job to Patty Pryor. Will you join me?

I have my Theology degree and have applied to every Catholic church that is hiring and saddly I get interviews but no job offer. I am thinking about going to a different religion for a Church job. I don’t WANT to since I am Catholic but I really need money. I just don’t know what else to do.

Don’t give up…keep praying about it and then pray some more. Perhaps the Lord is leading you to use your theology degree in a way that you have not considered. Hang in there, the job market is tough right now. Be persistent. I know, easy for me to say…since I’m not the one out there beating the bushes. For inspiration, I recommend you go to the Word Among us Website and read the articles in the August 2010 issue concerning prayer.
