KANSAS CITY, August 12, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A vote cast for a politician who supports abortion and same-sex “marriage” is nothing less than casting a vote for “evil” says a state conference of Catholic bishops.

In a voter’s guide released for the second time since 2006, the Kansas Catholic Bishops make it clear that Catholics would “commit moral evil” by voting for a candidate who embraces abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning, and same-sex “marriage,” when a morally acceptable candidate is available.

without naming names, since that is forbidden here, is there a morally acceptable candidate available for the highest office?

Hypothetically if taxpayer A supports taxpayer funded abortion on demand and canidate b supports only abortion in the case of rape and incest the Church(and it appears the KS Bishops) say it is morally acceptable to vote for canidate b.

I can’t find where our own bishop has made any statements for our diocese. Does any one know of other bishops or groupd of Bishops besides Kansas that have published guidance? I already have the tome by the USCCB.

That may well be true but voting for someone who sends our men to die in a senseless war should also be considered evil. That settles it. I won’t vote this year.

I’m not sure if you intended to be serious or sarcastic, so forgive me if I’ve misjudged your tone.

But frankly, I’m tired of this argument. We’re not picking people off the street, or raiding high schools for young men to send over seas to die. We are using our military for the purpose it is intended for. Those men and women signed up to be in the military. The military fights wars. They are there to fight wars for this country. So when they are actually sent to fight a war, it should be no suprise that they also might die.

But here’s the catch. They fight back too. They’re trained to fight and kill and given skills to stay alive. This is what they volunteer for. And thank GOD! that they are there to do just that. Because of our military men and women I am free today. And I gotta believe that every one of them know this, if not when they sign up then by the time they’ve finished basic training.

So when I hear people comparing something as evil as abortion to the wars we are fighting now, I can’t help but get angry. Wars, I will point out, that most of America not only supported but almost demanded we fight. After 911 people were just waiting for us to attack someone. People were behind Bush to go into Iraq and get Saddam in 2003. Wars that people demanded we fight to defend ourselves from terrorists, wars that (agree or not) did serve a purpose to defend our nation.

I say that until we give children in the womb guns to fight back against the abortionists, I don’t want to hear this nonsense. Yes, the wars are horrible and people die. But wars serve a purpose, and we send our best people with the best training to fight them. Abortion serves no purpose, the babies have no way to fight back, and it’s flat out murder. And it’s evil, and as catholics we should ALWAYS fight against it.

I’m sorry for dragging the discussion about war into this, but this argument is so false and to compare the war to abortion is specious and wrong.

Hypothetically, what if candidate A, though supporting a woman’s decision-making process, supports making policies that would decrease, if not eliminate, the need and number of abortions, while candidate B, though opposed to abortion except in cases of rape and incest, does not support policies that would decrease the number of abortions?

You can not support Canidate A. . No issue or combination of issude trumps abortion. Fortunatley, however, I have never faced this choice in all my years of voting for President or any other office.

BTW-we are all adults here. Lets not resort to euphemisms -we are no talking about a womans decision making process. We are talking about supporting the slaughter of 1.2 million children a year.

There is not a single soldier in Iraq that did not volunteer to serve. To say they were “sent to die” demeans their sacrifice and their commitment to serving their country.

While I am not comparing the war to abortion I do find it evil and cannot in good conscience support anyoe who also supports it. Which leaves me no choice but to abstain this year. I agree we should fight against abortion always but as Catholics if we were to follow the advice of both the current pope and his predecessor we would not have allowed this war either. True it does not carry the same weight but I just can’t keep voting for the lesser of two evils which is what we keep doing inthis country lately because we fail to actually put up a good candidate. Somehow if the candidate was agianst abortion but had every other Catholic position wrong we would find some way to support him. Not me. He has to carry more than just one issue.

I can respect that. And I respect your choice to abstain rather than just vote for a certain candidate who fully supports abortion anyway.

However, keep in mind abortion is an intrinsic evil, as the Pope says, and a non-negotiable issue. The war is not. It may be unjust, but not an intrinsic evil.

And the reality is, we may be fighting wars for a long time with the problem of terrorists aiming for the US. Will you always abstain?

When we continue to be lied to, yes, I will have to abstain. Anyone notice the other week how the president pulled executive privilege in the probe into the CIA leak? What’s he got to hide?

  1. While there are many important issues, not everything carries equal weight because they have different circumstances.
  2. Read the Catholic Catechism regarding the subjects of war and abortion and you will not find any kind of equivalency.
  3. Not voting can, in some cases, be tantamount to voting for a greater evil, or atleast allowing the greater evil to take place. As the quote in my tagline states “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing” (Edmund Burke)
I would recommend you pray about this.

I have prayed much. I cannot support anyone for president this year.
