No Deal, Fr. Rosica**

Fr. Thomas Rosica, director of the Salt and Light Catholic Television Network in Canada, recently wrote a shameless condemnation of pro-life people who objected to the August 28th Canonization in Boston, more commonly known as the funeral of Senator Edward Kennedy.

He called pro-lifers all kinds of names that could have come right out of Planned Parenthood’s verbiage for us, and he even insinuated in a subsequent interview that, of all people, EWTN’s Raymond Arroyo was somehow part of this “uncharitable” problem in the Church because Raymond spoke out forcefully against the Kennedy scandal. Then he attacked the best pro-life news organization in the business, LifeSiteNews, saying that they were doing “the work of the devil” in shining the spotlight on this travesty. If this is the Gospel model of non-judgmentalism, I am reading the Good Book wrong.

They need a good kick in the back end and a refresher course on Catholic bravery which St. Paul tells us makes us “strong, loving and wise.” (2 Tim 1:7-8)

Hello Thereseozi!!

This is sad. We pray for vocations, and for our priests, but sometimes somebody else beats us to it:(

Father

I know Fr. Rosica and can only speak highly of his accomplishments and pastoral manner. He has truly brought many to Christ. His actions surprised and hurt my wife and I, in ways that I don’t think he has fully grasped. You only have to see the new S&L promo video released that calls itself the voice of moderation to realize that they are still behaving as smug thugs. Instead of apologizing they are trying to marginalize those who know a scandal when they step in it.

However these incidents in which you write have given rise that I must make the choice between S&L and EWTN. I have cancelled my S&L subscription. I found the “Satan Baiting” used by Fr. Rosica tragic as it reminded me more of the SNL skit from the 1980’sof the church lady accusing everyone who disagreed with her as being Satan. A sad footnote to a brilliant career to be laughed at for being an unchristian name caller even though he has taken more than his share of insults.

This the second time I have cancelled my subscription to S&L for reasons of lack of faithful stewardship. It will also be the last time because I will never go back to the channel until a new CEO and programmer is hired.

There is a great deal of comfort to be had in the recent awards granted to founders of the EWTN for their most authentic evangelism to the world. Archbishop Burke has written a lengthy article that apparently turns the shallow name calling of Father Rosica on its head as he offers a far more compelling argument of where the demonic is. I have no doubt that his article was directed at Father Rosica. Those that value peace over truth or unity over life are the ones who divide the church. The faithful never seem to miss the foundational requirement of Christianity to embrace the culture of life.

Perhaps Fr TR will be released to become one of the new two AUX B’s they are looking to get in Toronto in the next couple of weeks.

Brothers & Sisters:

Thank you for posting. Now I know why I watch EWTN.

Here is Fr. Rosica’s Blogpost on the Salt & Light Website:
saltandlighttv.org/blog/?p=6502

I prayed for the repose of the soul of Yasser Arafat when he died, so I would expect nothing less than that we would pray for the repose of the soul of Edmond Kennedy, but I would also expect the Church which claims to uphold the standard of life not to have a gigantic public funeral in which a man who very publicly defied God’s law is repeatedly eulogized as if he were Mother Theresa of Calcutta. I would hope that an Archbishop would not put the Church’s “Imprimatur” on a life spent defying the commandments the sages said ought never to be broken:
  1. You shall not worship any false gods before me…
  2. You Shall not murder the innocent, and
  3. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
I understand Fr. Rosica’s desire for mercy for Ted Kennedy, but I’m appalled at his lack of understanding at the effect of Sen. Kennedy’s gigantic public funeral on the Church’s Pro-Life witness, and I’m further appalled at his terrible treatment of those who are trying to save, not only the lives of babies from the knives of Abortionists, but their mothers from lives of grief caused by the procedures. I’m further appalled that a Cardinal Archbishop would say the following:
Needless to say, the Senator’s wake and Catholic funeral were controversial because of the fact that he did not publicly support Catholic teaching and advocacy on behalf of the unborn. Given the profound effect of Catholic social teaching on so many of the programs and policies espoused by Senator Kennedy and the millions who benefited from them, there is a tragic sense of lost opportunity in his lack of support for the unborn. To me and many Catholics it was a great disappointment because, had he placed the issue of life at the centerpiece of the Social Gospel where it belongs, he could have multiplied the immensely valuable work he accomplished.

The thousands of people who lined the roads as the late Senator’s motorcade travelled from Cape Cod to Boston and the throngs that crowded the Kennedy Library for two days during the lying in repose, I believe, were there to pay tribute to these many accomplishments rather than as an endorsement of the Senator’s voting record on abortion.

In spite of the fact the Cardinal recognizes the tragedy of Sen. Kennedy’s decision to support the slaughter of the unborn, he fails to realize that this isn’t just “not publicly supporting Church teaching”, this is publicly OPPOSING the clear moral Commandments of God as expressed by His Church, and, because Kennedy advanced the Gospel of Death instead of the Gospel of Life, he undid whatever good he accomplished.

What the Cardinal & Fr. Rosica both fail to discern is the difference between a “Catholic Funeral” and the gigantic public thing with 2 Cardinal Archbishops & 3 eulogies where the man is practically canonized. Sen. Kennedy could just as easily have been laid to rest with a simple Requiem Mass out of the local parish with “family, friends & parishioners only” - NO PRESS, NO EULOGIES, NO ARCHBISHOPS unless the Archbishop happened to be a personal friend. That’s what MOST CATHOLICS receive, and, in this case, that would have been MERCY for a man who, according to the CCC, excommunicated himself from the Catholic Church.

Then, There would have been NO CONTROVERSY.

Your Brother in Christ, Michael

As a Canadian I now subscribe to EWTN not Salt and Light.Father Roscia has overstepped his bounds with his condemnation of those who feel the televised PUBLIC extravaganza of a pro-abortionist “catholic” was inappropriate and shocking ESPECIALLY since it was broadcast on S and L,a Catholic Television Station.
Mafia members, those who persist in public sin are denied Catholic funerals in Canada.Kennedy persisted in public sin after repeated warnings from the Church hierarchy and excommunicated himself because of his pro-death stance…Also,it was my understanding that he left the Church when he remarried and became an Anglican or Episcopalian. Why on earth was he given a Catholic funeral?

Father Roscia is pissed and embarrassed at the criticism he and his station received.I believe that he has been blinded by PRIDE.

Rose Kennedy was the last real Catholic in THAT family.Maria Shriver publicly describes herself as a cafeteria Catholic.
