From what I have heard, there are more Muslims attending weekly mosque in England than Anglicans attending weekly services. The same Catholics who speak of their Chruch history as a fascistic one commonly speak of Islam in glowing terms, as something to be embraced.

Oh dear Lord. Please don’t start them off again. Haven’t you read anything of this thread beyond the first page? Europeans and Americans have been talking past each other for close on six pages now. And using youtube to make a point is unlikely to impress or help. 😛

It does take a little bit of sophistication for sure to understand what is meant by no future. a girl might become a prostitute, and someone will say she has no future. Well, literally speaking, of course she has a future!
Europe once had greatness. and yes, the same goes for America.

And even adding them both up, they end up a tiny proportion of the UK population.
 
It really is the core problem - as I suggested on another thread about the ‘abortion ad’, anything that might possibly get the Great British Public to consider that there could, even possibly, be a moral issue involved has got to be a good thing (same could be said of most Western and Northern European countries).

Europe isn’t ‘America but different’, it’s just different.

This goes to the heart of what the Cardinal Kaspar has been addressing. Muslims make up what, maybe 3 % of the population of the British Isles. And yet, when it comes to living their faith, they are more there than the whole of the Church of England!!

But as per post 5, that is not really a problem for some here, because the welfare state is really what Christianity is all about anyways.

I don’t think that that is what Christianity is all about actually, or what the whole of the Judeo-Christian tradition is about either, if you prefer.

The absolutely only reason that Muslim becomes relevant into the equation is because Christianity—the core of European culture for two millennium—has become so irrelevant for so much of Europe…

We are not talking about being knocked out by a Suleiman sized bowling ball here.This is not the invasion of the Caliphate with the power and wealth of an empire that stretches from the East Indies to Spain backing him up. We are talking about being outperformed by a pea-sized competitor, having a piece of fuzz take one’s legs out from underneath.

In the 1970’s who was more British than a Pakistani immigrant?.. Well, maybe the queen, but that pretty much covers it. Now whole Pakistani villages arrive whole cloth, cousin marriages and polygamy and the whole kit and caboodle.

There is no reason for Europeans to be defensive. The message that the Cardinal was delivering to Europeans echoes many of the points that JPII made to America not so many years ago…

Is the idea that concern over a whole continent which is by and large without the religion and faith that sustained and defined it for the better part of two millennium really just more of the same silly hysteria that lies behind the latest flu bug panic, the much ado about nothing of the Y2K, or global warming, the next crisis that will arrive like clockwork when the last panic begins to fade?

When I was younger, I myself would have thought as much. As if God is going to help us with the ballooning cost of real estate and food, right?:rolleyes:

Is that really what our lives are now all about?

And what Europeans keep pointing out to you Darryl is that we find that increasingly hard to believe that from what North Americans write on CAF.

When I was born, Red Guards were charging around China and Americans and all reactionaries were ‘paper tigers’, I grew up in a world of socialist militancy, communist parties and Red Army tanks due over the border at any time and was a teenager in Thatcher/Reagan ‘Evil Empire’ days.

Then it all collapsed.

Now I’m, supposedly, threatened by a few psychopaths and silly kids trying to outdo the various crank terrorists of the world I grew up in because it’s today’s Muslim radical chic.

Picture me highly cynical. The biggest threat to Islam is likely to be European muslim kids of the next generation who consider a religious outlook based on imprisoning women within an economy dominated by goat annoying not really their thing.
 
Any ‘Movement’ heavily dependent on the enthusiasm of teenagers/young adults is doomed to learn the lesson that this decade’s ‘cool’ is next decade’s ‘whatever’ (you can even read the growingly despondent reports of Reich officials over the changing attitudes of German youngsters to the Hitler Youth and Girls’ League - and that was a society where fanaticism was also a prized personal asset).
 
One thing this thread illustrates is that generally posts by Europeans exhibit a more sophisticated style than those coming from the United States. It is also amazing that a statement by a Cardinal that seems a cry for a return to some “good old days of Christian Unity” should prompt so much response here. What else would anyone expect a European Catholic cardinal to say?
