Help! I am pregnant with baby # 3. My first was born when I was freshly married and young. So his godparents were my sister in law and my husbands best friend. They are both confirmed Catholics, but they were young at the time too. They have each gone away from the Church and neither one is in a valid marriage.

For my second, we chose my other sister in law and my brother. Again, both were confirmed Catholics and they definitely make better lifestyle choices than the first pair. However, my brother recently married a Protestant (in a non-sacramental marriage) and attends Protestant Churches so he is out.

We REALLY want good Godparents for our kids. I really want to find a couple/family who believes what we believe and is faithful to the Church, but we don’t have anyone! I am friends with a lot of women at church, but it is more on an acquaintance and social media level than a a personal level where I would feel comfortable asking them to be Godparents for my child.

What do you do when you have no one to be a sponsor. I have 8 months left to figure this out!! Help! 🤷

Grandparents can also be godparents. Is that a possibility in your situation?

Talk to your priest, and explain your situation…ask him for recommendations. He may be aware of someone in the parish who wouldn’t find it strange at all to be asked to be a godparent.

My husband and I are Godparents to all three of our grandchildren.Would having your parents or inlaws be an option for you?

If grandparents aren’t an option what about fellow parishioners at your Church?

My husband and I had a similar situation but what is worse is that no one in our entire family are practicing Catholics…let me reiterate…no one. We had one Catholic, my husband’s great aunt, who became Godmother to my first daughter. We adore her but she is in her mid-80s and cannot be an effective Godmother anymore.

So we took it to the parish and asked a friend of ours to be the Godmother to our next daughter. She was thrilled and has really stepped up to the plate. I know she will be a fantastic Godmother to our daughter.
She comes from a good Catholic family and is a wonderful example of the faith.

I know you said that you’d like a couple, but canonically speaking, you do only need one godparent. What about the SIL who is godmother to your second baby? If she’s still practicing her faith and has been a good godmother to baby #2, then that might work out very well. 🙂
