As I said before, God judges everyone according to their knowledge and faithfulness to Christ.

Just because someone doesn’t know about Catholicism doesn’t make them go to hell, but it still means that they should be Catholic. The only honest Catholic answer is that EVERYONE should be Catholic, there is no good excuse not to be.

Everyone should be Catholic and no one has an honest objection to it. As you described a crummy unfaithful Priest gave a bad impression of the Catholic Church.
By the same logic if you have seen a bunch of divorces does that make marriage wrong? No it just shows a bunch of bad marriages.

Bad Catholics are everywhere and it is easy to disagree with bad Catholics and poor understandings of the Catholic faith. No one can disagree with faithful Catholicism, without embracing sin.

Those born into the schismatic group are not charged with the sin of separation (CCC 818). Nor can a non-Catholic be excommunicated, as Catholic law does not apply to them.

But, the topic at hand is a **Catholic **who defects from the faith. They absolutely would incur latae sententiae excommunication (Canon 1364).

A Catholic is obligated to raise their children as Catholics.

It IS sad because they left the fullness of truth for something less. Life without the Eucharist is unthinklable to me.

The Magisterium has declared that there is no salvation outside the Church. There are, of course exceptions such as invincible ignorance, a condition which many ex-Catholics don’t meet.

Nothing personal here, but what you just described merely showcases how deep (shallow) their Catholic faith was. A well known Catholic priest once said, it is far better to be a good Protestant than a bad Catholic. That priest was Fr. John Corapi.

I doubt Fr. Corapi was referring to Catholics that left the Catholic Faith for such reasons. I think he was talking about protestants that sincerely love Our Lord and do their best to live a good, holy life.

Here’s another side of the picture.

I’m the oldest of 9.

My dad’s father was a convert (married a Catholic), as is my mother (Dad was a cradle Catholic).

Five of us (me, three sisters and a brother) are still married to the original spouse. One of the five married a Catholic. The other four married non-Catholics who eventually converted.

Two brothers are deceased. Both were married once–non-Catholics who converted.

Of the remaining two brothers, one married a Catholic and one a non-Catholic. Both are on their third wife.

Oh, my wife’s sister also converted, as did 2 of her 3 children after marrying Catholics. And, my great-grandmother converted at 80!

Your avatar put tears in my eyes. My dad is a Vietnam Vet. He died in 2000, 6 years before seeing me revert. My wife converted to Catholicism. She was a devout Church of Christ, which is very similar in many ways, even non-sacramental ways.

I’m just thankful my name isn’t there, although mine and my younger brother’s almost were. Too many young men and women are there. Who knows what they might have accomplished.

My dad was one of them. That was a common understanding and what many Catholics were taught for so long. However, it was never an official teaching of the Church. That was a big question I had to deal with once I realized and accepted that the original true church was and still remains Catholic…the Unversal Church of Christ that all Christians subsist in whether they like it or not. Can you imagine an eye of a blind man saying it’s not part of the body? Just because it doesn’t realize it’s a part of the body doesn’t make it any less a part. It exists within the body of Christ yet it exists imperfectly. The Catholics are supposed to be healthier, but our culture and shameful agenda driven heretics have pushed as many Catholics as far away from the true teachings as they can to try to “heal” wounds…which only makes the victims more suseptable to falling in to anti-Catholic organizations that proselytize more Catholics and thus a new viciouis cycle begins and grows. I know…I was one of those.

In my cathedral parish (Russian Orthodox/OCA), there is also a mixed Latin Catholic-Orthodox family.

The husband is a deacon in the Archdiocese of Chicago, he was ordained about three years ago. He is married (for what must be going on twenty years now) to an Orthodox woman who happens to also be responsible for our Catechism classes.

A Catholic is obligated to raise their children as Catholics.

Their children are very active in the parish, the teenage girls in the choir and the son an altar boy.

The Archbishop of Chicago is fully aware of the situation, he knows his deacon is raising the children Orthodox.

My bishop is fully aware as well, once a month the good deacon attends liturgy with his family. We are all delighted, he is a fine man and they are a wonderful family. We address him as “Deacon” and sometimes affectionately as “Father Deacon” and as per our priests instructions address his wife as “Matushka” even though he is not an Orthodox deacon, he has no function in our liturgies.

When I was a protestant, I loved the verse (still do)
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength,
and love your neighbor as yourself.”

I really did love the Lord with all my heart mind soul, and strength.
I was a true seeker, so I kept seeking until I found my way back Home to the Catholic Church. Now I know the Catholic Church is the one True Church.

Sad thing is, now I’m the only practicing Catholic in my family of origin.

Keep praying. Find what you both agree on, like the verse I mentioned. Know your own Catholic faith well enough to respond to any of their goofy protestant questions.

This post is more about “marrying” outside your faith more than anything. Chances are, if I meet a Methodist woman, that won’t keep me from dating her.

And all the SINGLES ministries are Protestant based…not many actualy Catholic singles groups…not sure why. I met a woman in our singles group who was a former Catholic, asked me what my religion was, and I told her…and she said she used to be Catholic, but she didn’t go for the whole “birth control” thing, and left that for the Non-Denomniational church.

I wasn’t being rude, just truthful. Catholics have been accused of that for centuries by non-catholics and it is NOT true. The Church has never taught that Catholics are the only Christians, but you have to keep in mind that for 1,500 years, Catholics WERE the only Christians,(including Orthodox who are fully Catholic), in the world. The Catholic Church teaches that anyone who is properly baptized is a Christian. In fact its really the other way around, many protestant denominations accuse us of not being Christians. What the Catholic Church actually teaches and what some, (even some Catholics), think she teaches are not always the same. One needs to study the Catholic Faith and get the TRUTH. As much harm can be done by Catholics that don’t know their faith well, as by those who try to distort the teachings of the Catholic Church.
