No Money for the Collection

I don’t have a job, and I am too busy to get one (I’m in college.) The only money I have is from gifts, but I don’t want to have to use that money for the collection because it is my only spending money I ever have. I could ask my father for money for the basket, but he never has any to give me (he puts it all into stocks and the bank.)

I think that they will give me a membership to the parish, but I think they will have a sheet with what you will give. I can’t give anything at the moment except change, which won’t last two years while I’m in college. What should I do?
I’m broke too, though for different reasons. So there are other things I can do. Because I have extra bits of time here and there, I might attend daily Mass or do other things. I sponsored somebody in RCIA and he was welcomed into the Church recently.

But if even your time is at a premium (And if it is… I mean, really? You can’t spare even one night per month?), donate the pocket change. Do a few extra prayers. There’s always something you can do, right?

The reason I don’t apply for jobs is because I want to focus all my time on college so I get good grades. I don’t want to put my small about of free time into a job, but rather into my hobbies. 🙂
I think your “no money” is more of a choice rather than a circumstance. A hobby just isn’t a very sound reason not to give to the church. You have a beautiful accordion and you play so well. I think you are a tad immature yet, but I have high hopes for you. Think of THE WIDOW’S MITE. She gave all that she had. That is a true sacrifice. Consider if it doesn’t hurt just a little bit you are missing out on a certain obtainable penance for the Lord who’s blood He shed for you.

I also had to work part time and full time when I went to collage. Not everyone is able to get loans, grants or scholarships, but do work their way through collage. Being a brainiac is not the final goal in life, but a good relationship with God is. Put a couple bucks in the collection basket. What would that be…8or 10 dollars a month? The cost of 1 pizza or maybe a couple Coffees or some soda? Look around on Sunday. Not everyone has even as much as a Widow’s Mite. Peace.

For now it’s simply a hobby. However, I know someone at the accordion association who said that he might be able to help me find places to play for cash. Another way I can make money with the accordion is by busking, but I don’t know if that’s legal.
I don’t know what busking is, but if it is not legal, don’t do it.
that would be great if you could get paid for playimg the accordion at parties or receptions. what is your major in college? I know how time consuming college courses can be and I have the utmost respect for those people who work and go to school at the same time. I didn’t have to work while I went to school which I was thankful for. God does provide so maybe a side job might come along that would provide extra cash to help you out. good luck!

Busking is playing music on the street with the case open for donations. Some places have it illegal (some places need a permit, but I bet the reason for this is so the government can make extra money just like with cigarette tax and alcohol tax) because they don’t want people to play music on the streets for whatever reason. 🤷

I major in computer information systems. However, at the moment I have some remedial courses (I have a nasty memory), and some of them give boatloads of homework. I’m in my first semester and I plan on only getting an Associates Degree. Afterwards I will probably either look for a job in the field, or join the Air Force as a computer worker.

I could probably find a way to make money playing the accordion. Busking is a good way. Another way I thought of is collecting scrap metal and taking it to a scrapyard for cash. I have seen videos of people legally taking metal people put out as garbage and making thousands of dollars! 🙂

sounds like you have good plans for your future. I didn’t know they called playing musical instruments in the street busking, but you should call someone in your city and find out if you need a permit. there are many people that do that in my town because we live in the mountains and many tourists come here on the weekends. I would find out if the accordion association can help you get jobs also.

I don’t know why you can’t be an usher or a Reader at Mass.

I would be interested in being a reader (I don’t know if they would like my nasal voice though.:o) Sadly, I don’t know if there are any open spaces at the 7:30 a.m. Mass (that’s the one I usually go to.)

They assign people.
If you have the same readers all the time i’s because they don’t have anyone else.
your voice doesn’t matter. They will train you on pronunciation, intonation, and projection.
There are even workbooks that show what words to emphasize for clarity.
Sign up if you want to, They like to have more people to choose from.
They will ask you what Mass you attend.
Good luck!

The Widow’s Offering

41 Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.

43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”

Ask not what you need for you, but what you will give to who.

The more you give, the more you receive.

Biblically speaking:

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (2 Corinthians 9:6).

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing” (Proverbs 3:9-10).

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap” (Luke 6:38).

“Good will come to him who is generous” (Psalm 112:5).

This is not just pious hyperbole.
It is true – I didn’t think I could tithe until I tried it, and the money increased amazingly. I have little time, but can afford to tithe to the church and donate occasionally to good organizations.
God cannot be outdone in generosity.

I just received donation envelopes. I have decided I will try to give at least 10 cents per week (as I have $0.00 income.) 🙂

You could also save up until you have a dollar and give a dollar bill on a periodic basis. Just because they give you weekly or monthly envelopes, that doesn’t mean you have to use them in that interval. The envelopes are just for convenience.

You are not required to put anything into the collection. You alone know the circumstances that you are in. If you have $0.00 income then you have no money to give. The little money that you receive in gifts is to help with your support. If you want to try to put at least 10 cents into the collection, that is up to you. Whether or not that amount is a true gift, a sign of false humility, or an insult is known to God. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. My advice to you is to wait until you start to earn money, then you can decide on an amount to put in the collection. In the mean time, you can pray for your parish or campus chapel (whatever the case may be). Perhaps your parish will have an event where you may volunteer your talent, playing your accordion, or whatever musical talent or other talents you have.
P.S. I love your little accordion and “Happy Wanderer” great job on your playing. The red one is nice too!

While not advocating you don’t give, there is no earthly mandate to give money to register or attend mass. And if you are truly broke you can probably muster 25cents?

Thanks for the replies! 🙂

I usually have coins left over from when I make purchases, and I wind up doing nothing with the coins. I figured that I might as well give put them in the envelopes. A tiny amount is better than nothing. 🙂
