Fr. Jenkins, the new president of the University of Notre Dame, came out strongly against the Vagina Monologues and the Queer Film Festival last night and it looks like this may be the end of them. I can tell you that reaction on campus is very mixed. I for one am very happy but my fellow psychology majors are livid but I think it is a step in the right direction. Can I just say that moral/theological issues aside…the vagina monologues is a BAD play…

Seriously…it’s a BAD play…

I don’t mean evil…I mean pointless…meandering…

The fact that it still gets mentioned is just bizzare.

There are plenty of good plays and movies that can be used to discuss violence against women and feminism.

But for heaven’s sake…why use such a lousy form of drama?

I agree but moreso I object because it is crude in my opinion and I think it has no right being at any Catholic institution and I am hoping that Fr. Jenkins will be the one that will bring us out of this abyss that Fr. Malloy led us into! Thank God he is gone!

from one who never saw, nor intends to see the tripe… I applaud the action… now if we can just get Fr McBrien to be retired too;)

One step at a time, my friend! I think Father Jenkins is choosing the pastoral approach. To prevent scandal, perhaps Father McBrien will in time opt to leave by his own choosing lest he be embarassed. I envision a departure akin to that of fellow liberal media sweetheart, Father Reese, from America magazine. 👋

What’s the beef with the Vagina Monologues? Has anybody seen it?

Yes, I had to read it and see it for an Intro to Theatre class at Notre Dame. It is simply crude IMO and has no place at a Catholic university…ESPECIALLY as a requirement.

:clapping: Thank God for Father Jenkins, and May we have a Thousand more, Lord! :gopray2:

Can you give a one para summary? I have heard about it, but only by name. What is it about?

Lets hope they improve more in the next 6 years. My brother wants to send my nephew there (I am not sure about his seriousness in this. My brother tends to be kidder).

I think instead of describing it I will show you an excerpt from it. This should give you an idea at least.

The thought behind it is good…the show is supossed to help stop violence against women. The problem is I can’t imagine how it accomplishes this goal and I am not sure that it does. I don’t know, you can judge for yourself. Here are a couple other links that could be helpful.

I don’t understand why the Catholic authorities at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts choose to celebrate Ash Wednesday by showing such pornography? It is simply incredible to me that these people who are supporting the showing of the V monologues on Ash Wednesday are all in good standing in the Catholic Church, while at the same time people who prefer the Gregorian chant and the Latin Mass at SSPX are all excommunicated and will go to hell for attending a rosary and dignified Latin Mass at SSPX? Has the Catholic Church been taken over by the sexually promiscuous?

People who go to those only because they love the Latin Mass and there is no indult Mass nearby are fine. Supporting their schism is not. Their founder ordained bishops without permission of Rome- that is an act of schism (and an Archbishop most certainly would know this).

When it comes to SSPX, the main problem I see is the attitudes. People act like they’d stone the priest to death if he had a heart attack during Mass “because it’s not in the rubrics”. They know the rules, but have forgotten what they’re all about- just like the pharisees did.

There are extremes that are inappropriate- both to the left and to the right.

But there is a big diference. If you adhere to the V Monologues during Ash Wednesday, and if you support a premise of the V monologues which is that one can attain salvation by engaging in lesbian sex, if you adhere to the clown Mass, if you adhere to the gay Masses, if you adhere to the policy of the bishops toward priestly abusers, if you adhere to and accept the lewd language of Father Greeley and if you adhere to his lewd novels, you are OK and you are fine and there is nothing to worry about. . But if you adhere to the rosary and the the Gregorian chant and the Latin Mass at the SSPX, you are excommunicated according to the canon lawyer Mr. Pete Vere and will suffer eternal fire and damnation in hell as punishment for your excommunication from the one true Catholic Church and for your adhering to a schism.

I don’t expect Richard P. McBrien will go gently into that dark night - though he may not get a choice.

As for Fr. Jenkins - I had class so I missed the speech, but in speaking to faculty and reading my Holy Blogs of Obligation, I’m pleased that I feel more at home now as the University’s pendulum starts to swing back to orthodoxy (I hope!).

God Bless,

Thanks for the links. I read the first one, but didn’t read the the other two because I had decided to read the whole play. (I prefer to read something wthout having read the commentary.)

From the first link, I don’t see any problem. Everything it says is quite reasonable, well written, and I can easily see how it would resonate with many women.

Since I have only read that single scene, I can’t comment any further.
