Mea Culpa. I misspoke. It would be more proper to say that God, in His mercy, **may choose to reveal the Truth of the Catholic Faith to some who are outside of the Church through **no fault of their own and are sincere in their seeking of God.

My intent when using the word “exception” is the incorrect idea that all or even most will receive such a revelation which would imply that there is little benefit to being in the Church throughout one’s life.

Thanks for the catch on that.
It is essential that we make this distinction, because the NEES (extra Ecclesiam nulla salus) has not been changed. We just understand it differently post-Reformation, when it became clear to us that people could be members of the Church invisibly, but even oppose it visibly, through ignorance.

It’s not our place to hold a Vatican-1 checklist up to doctrine and determine if it is infallibly proclaimed. That determination can only come from the Magesterium. Otherwise, the best we can say is that we *believe *it to be infallibly proclaimed, but that is only our opinion.
Agreed.

Its also worth noting that traditionally the Church has only spoken when there has been need, particularly when a doctrine was under dispute or attack somehow. As a practical matter in the daily life of Catholics, whether a doctrine was proclaimed though an Ex Cathedra statement, declared in a council, or passed on from the Church Fathers to today makes little difference. We must assent regardless.

I know you know this already, but I thought clarification for others who might come along later would be helpful.

Also, because it has come up in the thread, it is important to note that when new writings on a doctrine are presented, they should be placed into the context of Sacred Tradition. Often, the prevailing opinion seems to be that Sacred Tradition needs to be placed into the context of the newer writings, which is completely backwards.

Again, that isn’t really directed towards you, but rather more generally.

+Pax
