Peace is flowing like a river.
Flowing out through you and me–.
Spreading out into the de-sert.
Setting all the captives free.
Setting all the captives free.
Joy is flowing like a river.
Flowing out through you and me–.
Spreading out into the de-sert.
Setting all the captives free.
Setting all the captives free.
Hope is flowing like a river.
Flowing out through you and me–.
Spreading out into the de-sert.
Setting all the captives free.
Setting all the captives free.
Love is flowing like a river.
Flowing out through you and me–.
Spreading out into the de-sert.
Setting all the captives free.
Setting all the captives free.

Yeah, I’d remain anonymous too with lyrics like that.

If there was ever a hymn written that should be on List of Forbidden Hymns it should be “We Are The Church.” It has to be one of the lamest songs ever written, and the timing is atrocious, not to mention the words.

Others that should make the same List, in my opinion:

Lord of the Dance
O Sing About Christingle
I Watch the Sunrise
Caterpiller, Caterpiller Munching Munching
God’s Supermarket

How Great Thou Art
Make Me A Channel of Your Peace
What A Friend We Have in Jesus
If I Was a Butterfly
Let the Lower Lights Be Burning
Ain’t It a Shame
It Is Finished

And that’s just the beginning!
Please tell me that Weird Al Yankovic made a parody album of hymns and that the bolded songs are tracks from that album.

Edit: Just noticed from an earlier post that those are children’s songs. Still, I’m betting that if they’re used during a standard Mass, everyone is cringing.

I know about half of the hymns on that list, and I love them all!Why dont you like them?😦 ‘Here I am Lord’ is taken from that story in 1 Samuel 3,where God called Samuel 3 times.Whats wrong with it?And ‘They’ll know we are Christians’ is perfect, because they WILL know by our love, and Jesus told us to love people! How could you possibly dislike a hymn?God loves all hymns!Psalm 191 says ‘make a joyful noise unto the Lord’.If people are doing that, why wouldn’t you like it?I have written 5 hymns, and I suppose you’d absolutely hate them.
I grew up in a different era. I was 18 in 1969 and I am one of those of my generation who disliked the switch from traditional sacred music to music that was supposedly “more relevant and pleasing to the ears of the younger generation”.

Forty years later there are generations of folks who have no idea what traditional Catholic hymns sound like. There are folks who have been welcomed into HMC who fall in the same boat. Neither can be faulted because they have never heard what traditional Catholic hymns sound like. They’ve never heard Gregorian chant or sang the plainsong chants (e.g. Tantum Ergo, Ave Maria, Parce Domine) which the congregation knew and sang prior to 1969.

And then there is the myth that the congregation did not know Latin or that it was too hard for kids. Baloney! Such ideas demean children. As part of my preparation for First Communion in the second grade, Sister drilled us in the proper Latin responses and…dah da dah!..what they meant. At the end of third grade, I became an altar boy which meant that I had to learn the Latin responses.

There were no children’s hymns, no children’s Mass, etc. How insulting to the children of today! Are they any less capable than my generation? No. It’s all a matter of exposure and practice. I sang in a children’s choir in Latin for the TLM. It’s not rocket science, it is exposure and practice.

Scripture should not be confused with the music which conveys scripture. This is what I hear when I have to sing Here I Am Lord…

Here I am Lord, it is I Lord (ord), I have heard you calling in the night (i…i…i…ight). I will go Lord (ord) if you lead me (e), I will hold your people in my heart (ar…ar…ar…art). Four part harmony…yet, this is considered to be equivalent to a sacred Latin motet like this:

amazon.com/Beyond-Chant-Mysteries-Renaissance/dp/B0000006ZN/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-6443019-0998850?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1194723934&sr=1-1

My choir has sung most of these motets in both Latin and English (our Anglican bretheren translated a lot of these motets into English but let the hymnody remain the same). And before anyone jumps me, yes, we have four paid section leaders but the rest of our 30 voice choir are simply parishoners without degrees in music. The key is practice, practice, practice…if you can play the guitar, sing, and read music this type of music is the heritage of HMC and not inacessible.

One thing this thread should remind us is that we have a variety of tastes and preferences. At least on this one point I can specify why I do not like it. It was waaaayyyy over used when I first became catholic. However, I do not let my prejudice prevent me from using it every now and then. Actually, those who have made long list, like the OP and peary, I like about half of there dislike list.
Maybe three times a year at my parish.

I have an organist friend who despises “Eagle’s Wings.” His biggest beef is the way that it starts with “You who…” To him, it reminds him of his days growing up in Kentucky, when some people would call out, “Yoo-Hoo!” in order to get someone’s attention! :rotfl:
My friends and I call it “The YooHoo Song.” I’ve heard one cantor sing it with a bit of a break between “you” and “who,” which makes it closer to the intent of the text, but I still hate it. I could do that, too, but I don’t.

What I really hate is how some of these bad, mediocre or overused songs just ruin beautiful parts of Scripture for me. I can’t pray Psalm 91 without being annoyed by “Eagles Wings” running through my head at the same time. When I hear the reading about the calling of Samuel, all I can think about is The Brady Bunch.

Informally, when we have to sing this for a diocesan event, this is known to my choir as the “You who” hymn. :rotfl: :rotfl: Great minds run in the same direction.

Peace is flowing like a river.

Am I the only one to put a crude spin on this and be utterly unable to sing it with a straight face?

Betsy

I like Hail Mary, Gentle Woman… course, that’s prolly cause I always solo on it.

As for dislikes:
Malo Malo Thanks Be to God
Digo Si Senor
Seahomba (I totally butchered the spelling on that one)
Lord of the Dance

As for King of Glory…hehehehehe

We actually had “Prayer of St. Francis” and “I Have Loved You” as songs for the prelude in DH and I’s wedding.
I laugh every time I see that video.

Yeah, I’d remain anonymous too with lyrics like that.

Yep. That rates right up there on the List of Forbidden Hymns/Liturgical songs!

I actually think going with a simplified melody is the easiest for people to do and act upon.:harp:

I guess I’m not limited by the style of music I like or dislike, for I like all music.

I like Gregorian Chant, and I like the St. Louis Jesuits. I like John Michael Talbot and I like Michael Card. Saturday evenings, I like listening to the Gather Gospel Music Hour.

In secular music, I like jazz, classical, country, bluegrass, traditional rock and roll, as well as rhythm and blues.

If I were force to pick a style of music I don’t like, I would say rap, but then, I’m not sure that qualifies as music.

That has crossed my mind, but I keep thinking about what CAF member pnewton once said, that it sounded like a Pepsi commercial: “Pepsi’s flowin’ like a riverrrr…”!!

I also like many of the styles of music you mentioned, just not for Mass.

Luckily, we never have Spanish hymns in my parish. Most of the congregation do not speak Spanish.
Doesn’t matter. “Digo Si, Senor” is at least as bad, if not worse in English. The English title, not surprisingly, is “I Say Yes, Lord”, and it is unbelievably awful. It’s one of those hymns that, when it’s showed up on my cantor schedule, has made me seriously consider leaving the cantor ministry.

I can’t find easily copyable lyrics online, and I don’t have my hymnal with me, but believe me when I tell you that the lyrics are so bad you won’t believe it got printed in the hymnal, let alone actually used in parishes.

I heard this one once at another parish. I know mine will never use it. I do understand Spanish, and you are correct that the Spanish version is not as bad as the English version. I do not like either version, though.

Oh, my goodness. I haven’t heard this hymn since I was in grade school. It’s a poor adaptation of the Shaker tune and Copeland’s adaptation to it for his “Simple Gifts”.
I love Lord of the Dance and aboslutely dislike “Come as You are”
when I hear this I want to run and also join SSPX (I wont)
but I want to.

I don’t know why Pescador des hombres was put into the worst song category. That happens to be a favorite of mine! How did that happen? when I attended Mass in a very small village near Tehuantepec, Mexico. When the priest arrived, someone from the village began to ring the bell. It took an hour for everyone to get to the church. There was no guitar or organist. But the people began to sing this song and it was really one of the most heartfelt experiences I have ever had. Since that time, the song has always had deep meaning for me. I guess that can be said with just about anybody who likes just about anything!

The text is scriptural. Read I Corinthians. The hymn text is all about bringing the “gifts that differ”. “Sing a new Church” isn’t about what you think it is; it is a metaphor. Quit reading a political agenda into everything.
It may be a metaphor, but I am entitled to my dislike of it. And I am expressing my opinion and was not rude to anyone, why do you have to jump in and be rude? We were all having a little fun!
