Worst Hymn? The protestant version of “Praise to the Lord” which has replaced the traditional Catholic version in most hymnals. If you look at the words, the Catholic version ponders the sacred mysteries we are about to celebrate. The Protestant version is a rewrite of the Catholic version so it is gutted of Catholic theology.
Since it is usually used as an entrance hymn, the Catholic version better prepares and focuses us for what the Mass is. The Protestant version is just another feel good, Sunday worship service song you would hear at the First United PresboMethoBaptiPalian Church down town.
**“Praise to the Lord”
(Catholic Version) **
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him for He is our health and salvation.
All you who hear to his presence draw near; Join in profound adoration.
Praise to the Lord, let us offer our gifts at the altar.
Let not our sins and offenses cause us to falter.
Christ, the High Priest, bids us all join in his feast,
Victims with Him on the altar
Praise to the Lord, O let all that is us adore Him.
All that has life and breath come now rejoicing before Him.
Let the Amen sound from his people again.
As we here worship before him.
Praise to the Lord (Protestant Version)
Praise to the Lord,
the Almighty, the King of creation.
O my soul, praise him,
for he is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear,
now to his temple draw near;
join me in glad adoration!
Praise to the Lord,
who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
surely his goodness
and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew
what the Almighty can do,
who with his love doth befriend thee.
Praise to the Lord!
O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath,
come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again;
gladly forever adore him.
