I am not trying to be rude, disrespectful, or anything negative. I was wondering what brought all the non-Catholics to this website. How did you learn of the site? What do you use it for? I ask with the utmost respect.

I can’t remember how I learned about it. I have learned quite a bit about the Church and now in discussions I find myself saying something like " but if I was a Catholic I would say this" in rebuttal! Not sure any of you want me defending your positions!

It has become a habit that is consuming too much of my time. I get discouraged with the arrogance of some. It has helped me gain appreciation for my own Church and beliefs.

not in the least

you could say some (but certainly not all) CA posters are conservative, orthodox, traditional catholics

but arrogant; no way…

I used to work late nights at a restaurant after I got out of high school. Had to drop out of college to pay for deadbeat roommates. Catholic Answers Live used to run on repeat at 1AM and I would listen to it as we cleaned and I drove home. They advertised the forums.

I looked them over and saw the philosophy forum, and I signed up.

I started coming here to preach Islam and win some converts. I have now renounced Islam and I continue to come here because it’s fun. I am fascinated about religions and coming here is a good opportunity to learn more about Catholicism. I’m very ignorant about Catholicism, but this site has helped. I even bought a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

which is what? you can say a lot of things about CA posters. but, arrogant, i think not…
I am a convert and I used to feel the same way when reading apologetics or anything about the Catholic Church or the Catholic faith - that some posters were arrogant towards the non-Catholics. I think I see now they feel very strongly about defending the faith and firmly believe the Catholic Church was started by Jesus Christ. I have been Catholic now almost 10 years so I look at it from a different perspective than when I was a new convert.

I was raised Protestant here in the UK and have little opportunity to meet Catholics. Rather than rely on how third parties describe Catholicism or take notice of stereotyping I prefer to hear it from the horses’ mouths, as it were. Further, contemporary Catholicism is way more complex than the simple Methodism I grew up with and it is fascinating to be able to learn and compare.

I don’t take part in threads that are specifically Catholic such as ‘is it a sin?’ as I’m not in a position to confirm nor deny Catholic belief. I do enjoy the more general ones.

No worries, dude. As long as you’re asking, you’re ok by my book! 🙂

Randy Carson… I think that’s his name… let me try to look him up…
Cool, the man is still around!

He went to my more usual hangout, atheistforums.org, and invited some to come here… I came, I saw… I got banned, unbanned… then forgot about this place and recently was reminded about it by another catholic there.

What am I doing here?.. providing a different perspective on some issues.
I don’t think it’s good when you’re in a place that’s basically an echo chamber… lots of self-reinforcement of potentially wrong ideas.

What sort of issues have I recently participated on?
  • masturbation isn’t really a bad thing, huh?
  • space-time as a possible prime mover
  • pro-choice in abortion as the statistically pro-life approach

Been asked numerous times over the decade I’ve been here, but two:
  1. I enjoy conversation about faith. I believe I have more in common with Catholicism than with the American evangelicals that dominate Other forums. Plus, at least until the new format, CAF used to be far more charitable than forums like CARM.
  2. when I first joined I was Lutheran, and often saw the need to correct misunderstandings about Lutheranism. It’s tougher now because it seems to be more misrepresentations.

I also think something was lost with the new format. There was something special about the other one, which lent itself to better fellowship. But I guess things cant be forever.

I want to find out more the Catholic Church and her beliefs and I saw priests also intervene here so the discussion is not all relative to what everyone thinks, even though in general they find that we depend too much on the internet and I saw them staying away from most online discussions at least in Europe. It’s also true that most people try to get an online confession with a priest with the rest of us as witnesses so they just have to fend the questions off back into… the real life.😄 If you want to call it that way…🌬️

My 20 year old son has been dating a Catholic girl for 5+ years. He plans on asking her to marry him this summer. He is probably going to become Catholic (he was baptized in the Southern Baptist church and was very active in the church) . I started researching church history and Catholicism in an effort to be able to have an educated conversation with him about Catholicism.

I’ve read a couple of books he has given me about Catholicism. We only have one Catholic church in my city and the only Catholics I know are his girlfriends family. I came here to ask questions. In addition, I have also tried to answer questions from an American Evangelical viewpoint in a non-confrontational way, at least as much as possible when talking about a sensitive subject like religion. Sometimes I’m better at that than others.

@lanman87

Have you read “Rome Sweet Home” by Scott Hahn? He does an excellent job at discussing a lot of the different aspects of the Church and faith.

I’m learning about Catholicism since my brother wants to convert. I want to understand what he’s getting into and also it’s just good to learn what other people believe and see other perspectives, so I trusted the Oracle of Google and here I am.

I came on here because I was curious about the faith as a result of being in a family where my extended family members were Catholic. I then went inactive. I came back years later to ask folks more questions. I also asked for advice with planning my friend’s wedding in the Byzantine rite. I got super curious and the rest is history.

Two years ago I was on google trying to get some information about my oldest son’s first communion and how I a non-Catholic can be involved in it, and where I fit.

One of the websites that came up was this one, lurked for a while, had a thread that I had first hand knowledge in , signed up and have just kind of stuck around. I mostly lurk, but comment in threads that may have something to do with my back-ground or family dynamic.

A few years ago I was looking for answers for some issues I was wondering about. I came across ‘Ask an Apologist’. I liked the answers because of the amount of care and depth so I lurked around and looked at some of the other forums. It was also an opportunity to learn what we had in common with Catholicism. It made me understand more about what we believe and it has changed some of my beliefs. I joined at the end of 2016.

I like to think I am able to see both sides, and coming here and learning more about Catholicism has been great. There are so many knowledgeable people on here that take time to answer my questions and put up with my, for lack of a better term, ability to be a jerk. Thanks to all of you

P.S. Where is a good Protestant forum website? just kidding, please do not answer that
