well my friend was a catholic but now he is a mormon and he was the one that took me with the elders and about the god thing it was a guy from the mormon church and also the elders told that it was the prophet smith who said “like we are god was and like god is we may become” or something like that. then i told him that the catholic church says that there is only one god and then he said that how could be only be one god that our god has a mother and a father and that we have a celestial mother which is the wife of our god.
Please, Sigifredo, become educated about the Truth of the Catholic Church and be able to defend against the heterodox ideas of Mormonism.

You were directed in an earlier post to go to Catholic Answers page and read up about Mormonism. Here is a link:
catholic.com/library/Gods_of_the_Mormon_Church.asp

The main reason Catholics go to other religions is they do not know their Faith. Do not be so easily led astray!

May the Holy Spirit guide you to the Truth of Jesus’ Church, the Catholic Church.

Peace,
Mimi

Here is another good article you should read and study:

catholic.com/library/Problems_with_the_Book_of_Mormon.asp

You might want to go into this with the point of view of helping to re-educate your friend who is trying to witness to you about Mormonism. Only the Holy Spirit can convert.

Pray for help from Our Lady who will lead you to Jesus who is The Way, the Truth and the Light.

I am just curious to know what the reasons are that so many non-Catholics are on this forum. This is Catholic Answers. Are you here to convert - yourself - or us? Do you have a true curiousity or do you just want to show us the error of our ways?
I think Catholicism has a rich culture and a diverse spectrum of believers. Peoples of all race, background, and languages call this church thier home. I have many friends who call themselves Catholic. I have great respect for that tradition. Some of the kindest and most understanding people I know are devout Catholics.

That said, there seems to be a new surge of a fundamentalist Catholicism lately. It seems obtusely and irrationally focused on scrupulous moralizing of themselves and everyone around them. Take the e-mail that Catholic Answers has been sending out (over and over again) recently: “We must help Catholics vote like Catholics in 2008!” You think that there would be some mention of helping the poor, making sure that all americans had access to healthcare and education for thier kids, or any other social justice related issue. On the contrary, the article focused on issues like abortion and homosexual unions. I understand the focus on abortion. But the multiple paragraphs focused on espousing the evils of allowing civil unions? All the while, no single mention of helping the poor? Ugh. No mention of war? Healthcare? Just wages? Immigration? Nope. The new conservative, fundamentalist Catholicism creeping up (and frquently expressed on this forum) is only slightly concerned with these issues. They’d much rather spend all their time and energy warning the faithful of the dangers of homosexuals, laws allowing abortion, and embryonic stem-cell research.

Furthermore, look at the hot forum topics on this site. Alot of them (like this one about a 1442 papal statement declaring Jews, pagans, and other non-Christians will not be saved) are debates over the idea that Church dogma is infallible. The new fundamentalist Cathocisim that has sprung up absolutely believes in the infallibility of the Church - and it’s the basis for thier entire belief system. In spite, of course, of the obvious evidence to the contrary.

And finally, check out the numerous threads on here adressing every possible tiny sin - Are tattoos a sin? Is partial masturbation a sin? Should I attend my son’s non-Catholic wedding? Is listening to John Lennon a sin? Is it a sin to read the Qu’ran? Ugh. This new Catholicism is bent on scrupulosity.

My opinion is that this fundamentalist Catholicism (which pervades this forum) is harmful. Very harmful - and it’s easy to see if you just follow through the logical steps… If you believe that Catholicism is the surest path to heaven - then if you’re at all concerned about your family and friends, you’re going to do everything in your power to make them Catholic. If you think a given action, law, policy, or statement will make one more likely to be a conservative Catholic like you, then you ought to advocate it. The whole “Catholic Theocracy” thread a while back is a sign of things to come if you folks have your way, I think.

So, to answer your question: I’m here to maybe change some minds … and be entertained by some of the more humorous ideas on this forum (i.e., this thread about the apologetics value of the blood type of blood and tears from miracle statues). And though I doubt I’ll actually change some minds - at least I’m providing a road block along the way to that “logical conclusion” I talked about in the previous paragraph.

I can see this thread is getting off topic; here’s a thread where Mormon beliefs have already been discussed:

Are you Catholic?

Why am I on this forum? I thought about that and wondered myself, since I’m no longer Catholic.

I think that what keeps me coming here is that I have learned things on these forums about Catholic teaching that I never heard in my 38 years as a Catholic. It amazes me that I could be raised by two devout Catholic parents, attend CCD for 11 years, attend weekly mass and never hear about so much of what is discussed here. While I am no longer Catholic and disagree with many of the views expressed here, I find the discussions to be interesting and informative. The things I learn on these forums make it easier to discuss spiritual issues with my Catholic parents and other members of the family.

I am an RCIA Catholic and I think it’s great that non-catholics are on this forum. I have read more than I have posted (over the last couple months) and I know it can get heated but I truly believe we are all brothers and sisters, is this not what the Church teaches? If any one of us can teach any other one of us an ounce more of truth then we knew before than is this all not a success?

Not to mention I love a good debate.

1.) Sharpening Iron with iron
2.) Love of my brothers and sisters; John, Mike, Phil, Hai, Randy and Jane there are a few others too, I’m forgetful…Sorry:confused:
3.) Protestants with confusion that have came here need both POV’s
4.) Jude 3

It helps me understand some of my wifes beliefs. I take our kids to the Lutheran Church. I did promise to raise the kids Catholic. i also take them to the Catholic Church. My wife and I still argue about the Catholic Church and it’s teachings. I was Catholic 40 yrs. I now have a relationship with Christ in a Spiritual community.

Go back to Genesis and read what trying to be God will get you, and who put the idea in our minds in the first place (hint: he said he’d rather rule in hell than serve in heaven).
Btw the Mormon temple ceremonies give the answer, but not the conclusions Christians would draw (btw I belong to the Ortoodox not Latin Church).
The idea of Mormoninsm restoring a pure Church contradict our Lord’s words “the gates of Hell will NEVER prevail,” and “I am with you always unto the end of the age,” and make Him into a liar. And if He’s a liar why bother with ANY church of His, latter or former days.

Speaking only for myself: neither. I have no wish to convert or be converted. I do have Catholic relatives and friends that are dear to me. I’m also someone that tries to understand another person’s POV. If I have a question about what a Catholic believes, I’ll ask a Catholic. Also, since the board is open to everyone and there are also assumptions made by Catholics towards Protestants…I feel the right to correct anything that is not representing our view correctly.
I agree. I am a Catholic, but I have Lutheran and Methodist family members and friends. They are not anti-Catholic. I ask them questions if there is something I do not understand about their faith. They do likewise. We all pray for and with each other. 👍

Hi Philothea53,

TOS ok for non-Catholics. Forums that are small can be problematic - this forum has a large memembership so that makes it easier to get responses, make comments or ask questions. Initially I wanted to find some information about Purgatory. I didn’t join to convert ‘us’, ‘you’ have to convert yourselves. There are sections of the Catholic church that I am curious about eg, Monastic orders.

I myself am me… I follow the Buddhist practices because I’ve found them to be extremely logical, and they really don’t conflict with other religions, and it’s not even a religion itself according to most scholars. It’s the moderation, middle, balance, center between extremes that is quite peaceful.

I went to Catholic schools for almost 12 years and I enjoyed my time at them very much, although I was the only atheist in school that I knew of. I'm not out to convert people to what I believe, and I'm not here to convert myself, I'm just here to offer another opinion in this melting pot of ideas. I'd like everyone to find happiness, and wish no one to be unhappy, that's my goal.

I have met awesome open minded Catholics, and strange closed minded buddhists in the world, and vice versa, but thats not their religions doing, it's their own choice.. So I'm here to lend a hand in advice, ideas, opinions, thoughts, etc..
Good post, good understanding of what it means to be ‘peaceful’ and show love for others. Well done 🙂

Hi all,

I came to this forum after realising I was very anti-Catholic. I asked a priest a question that was quite offensive with hindsight and he answered me with a good sense of humour.

I thought I should maybe do some research as i held A LOT of anti-C views openly. I’m quite open about what I used to believe, and quite embarrassed too.

I’ve learnt more about my relationship with faith by studying another religion then I have while being brought up in my own, I think because the differences make you question things that you blindly accept when growing up in a faith. I expect this also explains why so many Catholics I have actually met are so uneducated baout their own faith too…they could maybe do well to be caused to question differences too lol

I am now considering converting to Catholicism and know that it is the one true church, believe in its apostolic succession, real presence and sacraments… I’ve still got a few issues but I think things happen in their own time.

I originally came to the forum after learning about a particular article in “This Rock” entitled “Anti-Neopagan Apologetics.” As is frequently the case when folks in mainstream religions talk about Neopagan religions, the article got a lot of the information about Neopagan religions wrong.

What possible use for apologetics is incorrect information? Say, for instance, that one for some unknown reason wanted to convert a Catholic to one’s own religion, would it be helpful if one came up to the Catholic and said “You should convert to my religion because we don’t worship statues or dance the hornpipe on the church lawn with blue ducks tied to our heads every third Thursday” or is it more likely the person would think one was at best misinformed or at worst a loony and get as far away as possible?

If you want information about another religion you can either sit around with your co-religionists talking about your idea of what so-and-so believes, reinforcing any incorrect stereotypes and misinformation you may have, or you can actually talk to someone who follows that religion and maybe learn some accurate information. Doesn’t mean you will agree with it, but at least you are then disagreeing with something they really believe or do rather than something you just think they believe or do. I will say that my participation has been eye-opening about Catholicism.

So one reason I stick around is to help dispel incorrect ideas about those religions with which I am familiar, either through personal experience or study.

It is not entirely altruistic, however. The best way to practice apologetics is to debate with someone whose ideas are different from your own. They are going to do their best to poke holes in your argument, just as you are doing to theirs. It strengthens weak arguments on both sides. Honestly, the 8 months I have been participating here have strengthened my faith considerably as well as my ability to clarify and articulate why I believe as I do.

I’m also weird enough to think comparative religion and apologetics is fun:) .

Susan,

You asked

I am a Lutheran pastor. I frequent this forum as a way to increase my knowledge of Catholicism and, on occasion, to explain Lutheran theology when I see that it is misunderstood. I do not expect to convert to Catholicism nor do I have any intention of urging Catholics to become Lutherans. I simply hope to engage in constructive dialogue on subjects of mutual interest.

I am dismayed by people who enter this forum for the purpose of attacking Catholicism just as I am dismayed by Catholics who feel compelled to flog Martin Luther over and over. Neither serves the cause of better understanding among Christians.

I think it’a a totally legitimate question, and I think some people are taking it the wrong way. I don’t think the OP is saying non-Catholics shouldn’t come here. I am glad they do. But in the same way I do not frequent baptist forums or muslim forums, I am surprised that so many non-Catholics are here. So it’s natural to wonder why - if I were frequent baptist forums it would probably be to dispell myths about the Church or maybe spread some converion seeds. I expect there are some protestants here to do the same.
