DLClark;5521114:
In these verses you will find that faith is all that is need to be saved.
Sigh. I’ll say it again. Faith and works cannot be separated.
Hi Mickey,
I agree. Faith and works cannot be separated.
In these verses you will find that faith is all that is need to be saved. 1 Cor. 15:1-4; John 3:16-18; John 5:25; Acts 16:31; Romans 5:1; Eph 2:8-9; Titus 3:5.
I followed up but I didn’t find your assertion endorsed within the passages and verses you selected for consideration, scil:
1 Corinthians 15:1–4:
Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
In my opinion, this passage doesn’t suggest that faith without works is all that is needed for salvation. Rather, it suggests that salvation comes to us if we hold firmly to the Gospel. That Gospel message includes the stern warning given by our Savior in Matthew 25:31–46.
John 3:16–18:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
In my opinion, this passage doesn’t suggest that faith without works is all that is needed for salvation. Rather, it suggests that whoever believes in the Son of God shall have eternal life. But ideas do have consequences and so sitting in an armchair doesn’t qualify as real belief.
John 5:25:
I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
In my opinion, this verse doesn’t suggest that faith without works is all that is needed for salvation. Rather, it suggests that those who hear will live. Faith isn’t mentioned and although I tried to alight upon a thought pattern that might eventually associate itself with your original assertion the best I was able to achieve was to sense a somewhat vague and tenuous inference that might with a great deal of effort be loosely linked to a preconceived idea.
Acts 16:31:
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved – you and your household.”
In my opinion, this verse doesn’t suggest that faith without works is all that is needed for salvation. Rather, it suggests that whoever believes in the Lord Jesus will be saved. But to conclude that it says inertia is the same thing as belief seems to me to be a little unreasonable.
Romans 5:1:
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
In my opinion, this verse doesn’t suggest that faith without works is all that is needed for salvation. Rather, it suggests that since we have been justified through faith, we have peace through our Lord Jesus Christ. The post–Reformation Western notion particularly prevalent amongst American Evangelicals that faith constitutes a magic moment during an altar call is a curious one and I daresay Saint Paul didn’t mention it because it never occurred to him that faith without works was possible even within the realm of wild and wayward speculation.
Ephesians 2:8–9:
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.
In my opinion, this passage doesn’t suggest that faith without works is all that is needed for salvation. Rather, it suggests that we have been saved by grace, through faith and therefore we cannot boast about the works that are naturally attendant to faith.
Titus 3:5:
he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
In my opinion, this verse doesn’t suggest that faith without works is all that is needed for salvation. Rather, it suggests salvation is because of the mercy of God and nothing more.
In these verses you will find that faith is all that is need to be saved. 1 Cor. 15:1-4; John 3:16-18; John 5:25; Acts 16:31; Romans 5:1; Eph 2:8-9; Titus 3:5.
I have the feeling that you might possibly be mistaken.
Respectfully,
Mick
