I am withdrawing my questions, and unsubscribing from this thread, so that those who are concerned about the ‘topic’ of this thread going off topic can let the thread return to the topic and stop the repeated ‘corrections’.

When Catholics ‘defend’ their faith, the door is open for questions and answers, even questions that veer off topic of the thread we happen to be in.
The OP requested that you do not do that though. Right? The CATHOLIC OP. So its just flat rude or arrogant to ignore that. UNLESS one just did not read it carefully being the only other option…IMO:blush:

=michaeldaniels;6372249]I am sorry, but I refuse to believe that The Holy Spirit…The Spirit of Truth will lead someone to error. It is impossible. Now I am not saying that the Spirit is not at all involved in these peoples lives and they are not trying to seek God with their whole hearts…however, due to some impediment or something, they are unable to make the complete journey to Catholicism that The Spirit is really leading them towards. I apologize, but as a Catholic, I believe…actually I KNOW Catholicism is the One, True, Church and it is not possible The Holy Spirit would lead someone into apostasy and heresy…There are two reasons one ends up outside The Catholic Church while claiming it is The Spirit which led them there:
  1. They either fail to understand or just plain refuse to go where THe Holy Spirit is leading them.
  2. It isn’t The Holy Spirit, but he Devil leading them away…especially the case in fallen away Catholics. You can call me a jerk or rigid or whatever, but The Holy Spirit and Christ will not desire for you to leave The Catholic Church…and to claim it was His will for you to do so is a lie. It is possible The Father of All Lies willed it to happen, but it certainly wasn’t Christ or The Holy Spirit. Just as Christ was incapable of sinning, The Holy Spirit is incapable of leading one to error, apostasy, and heresy.
This is temporal thinking. The Catholic Catechism claims that the Holy Spirit uses other Churches and “ecclesial communities” to bring people to salvation. If that is true, and salvation is possible via other Churches not in communion with the Bishop of Rome, then the Holy Spirit does in fact bring people into all truth (the Church Triumphant). The sin and error of this world is our doing, not the Holy Spirit.

Well, several corrections, from several posters, is close to the same thing, no?

Our degree of honesty is based upon the OP’s groundrules.
So when a thread is started by a Catholic asking for moderation…we are more likely to be honest about what we think. So no…it is not the same thing because you read the OP and the corrections are based upon something you started. If you go around whacking people when the intent of the thread was stated to not whack people, you cant blame others for calling you on it. Seriously Prodigal. You have to have better social skills than that:shrug: Right…:D:confused:🤷

Yea, but it seems there’s more on me asking questions than the intended topic at this point.🤷

Elisabeth, I practice the dhamma because it helps me deal with the suffering in my daily life and is, to me, the path that offers the most spiritual truth.

The teachings of the Buddha have improved my quality of life exponentially. The bible often speaks of looking at things and judging them by the fruit they produce. The Buddha said something similar. He said that we are not to simply accept his teachings because we revere him or have faith in him. No, only accept his teachings after you have tested them and they have proven useful. The “fruit” of dhamma practice in my life is very real and without it, I would be without purpose and without guidance. Some ask if Buddhism is true. I say, by it’s fruits, I know it is true.

Salvation is not possible via any church Catholic, Protestant, or Martian. Salvation comes to man through the blood of Jesus Period. Jn. 14: 6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

I am sorry and I know this is going to sound awful, and I will get flamed for this…but seeing how there is but One Holy Spirit…the Spirit of Truth…The Paraclete…I find it rather impossible…and oxymoron if you will, that The Holy Spirit would lead someone to error and heresy…I could be wrong though…they say The Lord works in mysterious ways, but to purposely lead someone into error, is not a mysterious way…it is a fallacy. Perhaps The Spirit was leading you, and you made a pit stop along the way. I will pray for you on your journey and hope you make it Home.
I was going to let this slide, but my curiosity got the best of me. Why do you say that I have been led into error and heresy. Do you think that I am lying about being led by the Spirit or just mistaken and how would you know.

Rather, the Eucharist is the Pledge of the Glory to Come because it is the glory to come. The Eucharist is Jesus. What we shall receive in Heaven will be full participation, not in something utterly different, but in the very same Jesus we receive in the Eucharist. To be sure, in one sense, everything will be different. Like the Risen Christ, the whole universe will be transfigured and we might not recognize the old girl at first. But when our eyes adjust to the light and we look again we will recognize that this place is Home, the place we’ve been looking for all our lives. And we will recognize that it has been among us, even on earth, because the same Jesus we know in the Eucharist is the Jesus who will welcome us to the Great and Ultimate Marriage Banquet at which He presides and offers Himself to us all.
That’s why the charity we are slowly learning to show to our exasperating brother in Christ matters. Because as C.S. Lewis says:
It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no *ordinary *people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilization—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendours. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously—no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity must be a real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinner—no mere tolerance or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment. Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbour is the holiest object presented to your senses. If he is your Christian neighbour he is holy in almost the same way, for in him also Christ vere latitat—the glorifier and the glorified, Glory Himself, is truly hidden.
I just read this in the National Catholic Register (article by Mark Shea) and offer it with the hope that we, especially the Catholics here, will realize we speak to Our Lord as we speak to one another. I am a guilty, no, MORE guilty, than anyone of failing to see Christ in those with whom I disagree and failing to listen to others’ stories without prejudice.

I started this thread with this hope–that we Catholics can just listen for a while. I don’t believe anyone is brought to faith by argument–I’ve tried and failed at that for too many years.

So, again, a sincere thank-you to all non-Catholics who have given a reason for their faith. I look forward to reading more.

God bless you all! em

From the thread on “non-Catholics; Why are you here?”

I’d be interested in reading why you have chosen and remain in the faith you profess–NOT why you’re “not Catholic” buy why you ARE pagan, LDS, Lutheran, Methodist, etc. Oh, and please avoid simplistic statements like “I am {blank} because it’s the true religion.”

Please leave out the “anti-anything” rhetoric . . . restrict yourself to a positive defense of your chosen faith. Please, PLEASE, re-read your proposed post before posting it to see if it contains anything negative, then edit it to keep it positive. Thanks!

Again, this is what I’m looking for:

And if I can add one more request, if Catholics or others not of the faith being presented have any questions about a post, could you please just ask questions for clarification so that we can all learn more about one another? Maybe then others will feel free to post without fear of getting hammered. Again, I thank you in advance.😃

Why am I Christian? To be as brief as possible…

(1) Had a Christian upbringing (Methodist church)
(2) Did the teen thing of partying, drinking, and smoking dope
(3) Went to college and became tired of the partying. Now that I was away from mom and dad began to think more seriously on life and…God.
(4) Came to the conclusion that true Christianity was distinct from all other religions. Everything else I encountered had some formula of good things you must do to find God. True Christianity said there is no way that works. On the other hand, Jesus died for you and by putting your life in His hands you can find God.
(5) Decided to put this to the test. I would try to “be perfect” (or at least very, very good) and see how it works for me.
(6) Started to smoke again three weeks into being perfect
(7) Ran into some Christians in college. That night asked Jesus Christ into my heart.

Why am I Assembly of God
(8) Upon return to my hometown on vacation decided to hook up with the most radical local Christian group I knew and the group that shared Jesus with me in high school. That was a local Charismatic church.
(9) Everything else has sort of logically followed
(10) I do hold “what branch of Christianity I associate with” kind of lightly knowing that God could change it. I don’t believe that the church of Jesus Christ is found exclusively in one organization.

One more thing…the OP said this is to be a nice…non-debate thread. So I will not be responding to any responses here that sound snarky.

Did these Popes have the Holy Spirit when they made these statements? Were they sitting in “Peter’s Chair”? I have asked this on another thread.

*We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff. Pope Boniface VIII

Into this fold of Jesus Christ no man may enter unless he be led by the Sovereign Pontiff, and only if they be united to him can men be saved. Pope John XXIII

Those who are obstinate toward the authority of the Church and the Roman Pontiff… cannot obtain eternal salvation. Pope Pius IX*

This is not the Gospel taught in the Holy Bible.

These were not infallible statements and were not spoken ‘ex cathedra’.

As one who has been corrected, by several posters on this thread for asking questions, I’m going to ask that you refrain from making this a place to promote your opinion that the Church teaches a gospel that ‘is not taught in the Holy Bible’, or a place for Catholics to ‘defend their faith’. If you wish to start a new thread, your topic(s) can be discussed in detail.
If your church holds true to the Scripture given to us by the Apostles then your tradition is from the time of Jesus!!
This is according to interpretation and then comes into question the authority of interpretation. Do you propose the Catholic Church be held to the multiple interpretations held by various denominations?

Please do not answer the question here. Start a new thread.

I love GOD and what He has done for me.

After studying many different religions and dominations I know where I am celebrating my faith is the closest thing to what GOD had in mind.

Someone mentioned the 10 Commandments- I do believe we should follow these to the letter, because it is one of the more straight forward requests we have from GOD.

We have a Saturday evening church service and I am trying to get it in my mind to attend that one. It just never seems to work out. GOD chose that specific day, we should honor it! But any day is better then no day!

These were not infallible statements and were not spoken ‘ex cathedra’.
Thank you for answering! Ok Catholics then are simply repeating these things said by Popes in passing.

I have seen Catholics saying these very same things so it seemed that it was a doctrine of the Catholic Church!!!

If you be;ieve that we are saved by grace alone through faith in Jeus Christ, then you know that faith comes from hearing the Word of God. It is a means of Grace, along with others, that Christ set up His Church to provide. Of course, one can come to saving faith without the Congregation of Believers, but it is in the Church where the means of Grace are found, and faith is nurished and nurtured.

I too doubt the Holy Spirit leads into error. Does that mean the children of God can’t stray into error? Of course not.
