Yeah, I do not know enough about it to make any type of decision on it, however having said that…what I have seen since coming here is an awful lot of rules, and terms I have never heard of before in my life. It’s like another language!

Was that you poolside?

LOL WHAT A PICTURE!!!

Im with you as well. I feel like I have learned so many new vocabulary words:thumbsup: and a little latin;)

The amount of rules also struck me. Actually I was taken back on how similar catholocism is to Judaism. The amount of rules I mean.🤷

I thought the picture indicating you were about to convert. 😃

Anyhow, Jesus came to us not to destroy but to fulfill. As we live in any society, rules are set for the sake of us. For example: rules of transportation - it helps you prevent car accident. Similarly, in Christianity, we must have rules - it is for the sake of our souls - no one else.

After all, God has rules for us - the Ten Commandments, and the Catholic church’s teachings help us follow God’s rules.

Water

Well if I did, it would be the picture to use! In the meantime Cat should “dive” on it 😃

I get what your saying water (all this water, Im nervous  ) I was getting at more how rules restrict. We are discussing that in the communion of other faiths thread.

God is bigger than us, and we often want Him to operate within our box and get uncomfortable when He doesnt. He promised to hear all of us whenever we call.

Hi,
I think we try to humanize God because it is all we can understand with our finite human minds.:o

We have to remember that God is WAY ABOVE US and OUR WAYS.

That is why we cant put God in a box or go beyond scripture because then we are trying to put a human spin on God’s Word. Someone else on the forums said that we try to over intellectualize God and therefore analyze the bible way more then we need to.🤷

But , there is such a thing as too many unnecessary manmade rules.😦
Oh, I know it. There were all kinds of unnecessary man-made rules at the Baptist church I went to. From the outside it looks like the RCC has a lot of rules, but having been on both sides, there are a lot less rules in the RCC than I had to follow as an Independent, Fundamental Baptist.

Then again, Independent, Fundamental Baptist are just one step away from being…I cannot think of the denomination, but the ones who do not wear makeup, go to movies, don’t dance, no pants for women, etc…

Apostolic Pentecostals, I believe is the denomination you’re looking for. Pilgrim Holiness is another. Yep, a whole bunch of man-made rules. 👍 You got it.

Hi everyone,

This is just an update on my last post, in which I said that I was interested in learning more about Catholicism. I’ve listened to several Bible Christian Society lectures and found them surprising in their clarity and detail. They were probably the best Catholic apologetics materials I have ever encountered, so I thank Pixie Dust for the help 🙂 !

Anyway, I return to this thread with a question: How much (if any) room is there for disagreement with Catholic teachings in the Church? For example, would it be possible to become a Catholic while being unsure about certain teachings, yet accepting the vast majority? That seems to be my problem, frankly, that I feel Catholicism is the most correct Christian denomination, yet I disagree with a few elements, like the emphasis on Mary (not the actual doctrines like Immaculate Conception and Assumption, but the emphasis placed upon them) and prayer to her. I appreciate your help, I feel like this is an important decision for me, and that God may be guiding me in this direction.

You’re very welcome. John Martignoni has four small kids and drives a very late model vehicle. I like to help him out any way I can, and I believe he does a bang-up job of putting the Catholic Faith in plain (yet Southern) English. 😃

The Catholic Bridge (another handy apologetics site, this guy “speaks” Protestant) has a list of Catholic Dogma. These are the things that are required for you to believe if you wish to authentically be RC. He also has some good info on Mary. I’ll tell you though, the “emphasis” on Mary is more something that you hear about from non-Catholics about the RCC. Once I started attending Mass, I was surprised at how infrequently she’s even mentioned. You only hear her mentioned twice during Mass, once during the confession if your parish uses this Form of the Penitential Rite:

I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. And I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

My parish normally uses this Form:
P: You were sent to heal the contrite: Lord have mercy.
C:Lord have mercy.
P: You came to call sinners: Christ have mercy.
C: Christ have mercy.
P: You plead for us at the right hand of the Father: Lord have mercy.
C:Lord have mercy.
P: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
C:Amen

Which means in the Mass I attend, Mary is mentioned only once, during the Creed, and that’s in reference to Jesus.

*We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and our salvation, he came down from heaven:

(All bow during these three lines)
by the power of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered, died and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory, to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life: who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified:
He has spoken through est the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic, and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.*

Asking Mary or any of the saints to pray for you is not required at all, but listen to “Communion of Saints” from the Bible Christian Society before you decide you’ll never do that. 😉

I agree with you totally:thumbsup: But , there is such a thing as too many unnecessary manmade rules.😦 I am all for following God’s rules(well, Im working on it anyway:o )I just dont feel the need to follow the rules set forth by the church that are not a necessity. If people can follow all of them then more power to them. Just like on vacation I was talking to a Jewish man and he says he follows all the 613 rules of Judaism when he is home in Israel. I explained to him that Jesus came and gave us freedom from all of those rules(most of them, anyway). He still wanted to remain Jewish–I laughed and said I was not trying to convert him but just to give him food for thought.👍
I don’t see any rules as unnecessary, and I certainly don’t call them as man-made rules. After all, it is the Holy Spirit who inspired us and help us come closer to God. Any rules that help me closer to God, I am all for it.

Of course, Jesus doesn’t want us to follow rules but our hearts are not. Jesus was against those who followed rules with pride and show-off.

ya, I’m considering converting. I’m not really sure yet, but if I had to venture a guess, I would guess I’m slowly heading in that direction. 🤷

I would enter the RCC tomorow but my whole family are Mormon and I know that it would cause enormous distress if I were to do so.

I do however live in the light of the faith of others within the RCC and know that if it is God’s will a way will be made as it was for the Children of Israel to be lead out of Egypt.

I have just recently read Pope Benedict’s book Jesus of Nazareth which has provided peace during the hours of conflict.

Pray for me a sinner…

We are all sinners and we should pray for one another. God bless.

I am a Catholic, but I think everyday is another opportunity for a “conversion” of heart mind body and I will feel this way each day of my life.
We can all be better Catholics everyday. 👍

Yeah I agree with you on that. I have a friend who is fundie baptist and is very legalistic. I wouldnt survive in her church. The women have to wear dresses or skirts and I am not that kind of dresser.

I dont think it is just the CC. I see it in many denoms and also in Judaism.

Their is freedom in Christ:D

Im dogmatic where the bible is(biblical priciple)and not dogmatic where the bible isnt. If my church tells me I have to wear a dress to church I would say where in the bible does it tell me I have to. If Im not violating biblical principle then that is when I view some rules as unnecessary and man made.
My sister feels that Im borderline sinning because I have a cleaning lady:eek: I always tell her that the Proverbs 31 wife had a maidservant so 😛 . Besides I look at it as I am helping this woman pay her bills and make a living.👍 😃

I 100% agree with your last paragraph.👍
