That is because you are Jewish and are not in touch with Catholic bashing. Catholics can no longer sit on the sidelines while others bash us to pieces. At least not this one. As St. Paul said “I AM WHAT I AM”.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, was yet another textbook example of how passages from Scripture are being ripped from their context and used in whatever way feels right at the time…

Ok…it seems you didn’t have the ability to figure out the answer, as you think that I meant the Lutheran church…I’ll then degrade myself enough to once again explain what I have explained a thousand times already:

The Church Catholic is not = what is called in here “the Catholic Church”. The Catholic Church is the largest branch on the tree that is Christendom, not the tree itself. Jesus was referring to ALL those who believe in His name, who are ALL persecuted and hated for His name’s sake. ALL Christians - ALL! Not just those of any one denomination, but ALL. I don’t know if I’ve said “ALL” enough times to make my point, but I hope so.
“Universal” means just that: Universal! Not “part of the Roman-Catholic Church”.
Sorry…this is off-topic…but given your response…could you please reply to my thread “We Must ALL Agree (part 2)” ???

I post because I am a former Catholic and to be honest, I find it disheartening the form of Catholicism that seems to be prevalent on these boards. The Catholicism I remember fondly was a rational faith that used reason rather than warring with reason.
Just because you are a Former Catholic does not give you an authority that you know the Catholic faith. To be honest, I think you are more ignorant of the Catholic faith and lack the understanding of our faith.
It was a compassionate religion that offered forgiveness and non-judgementalism rather than insisting on adminishing the sinner. It was a religion that was agnostic as to political party, not carrying water for the GOP. This form of Catholicism I believe to be in error and nihilistic as it seems to seek so hard to be uncharitable that it ever shrinks. And, to be honest, it does not seem to be the faith of Benedict XVI.
Catholicism is not Agnostic. Agnostic beliefs is not certain about the existence of God. The Catholic Church affirms the Nicene Creed which is said on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation. You have a distorted view of Catholicism. You never understand nor do other Ex-Catholics in this forum.

**Lutheran my friend, the word church means “assembly”.
The word Catholic means “Universal”.
The pope today is even referred to as the Supreme Pontiff of the Universal church.

**

Catholic means universal. If it does not mean universal then what else does it mean?

Second, it’s not just Roman Catholic Church. If you want to describe the Church as it truly is. It is Catholic Church. The Church has 23 Rites, one is Latin Rite or Roman Rite, and the other 22 Rites are Eastern Rites which are not Roman.

So our Lutheran friend got his info all WRONG.

Most NCC (Protestants) do attack the Church here. It’s also in the secular society. Even from Caferia Catholics.
Calling certain members of our Church “Cafeteria Catholics” isn’t productive or charitable. To call them this implies a certain, “I’m following all of the rules, I’m a REAL Catholic, and you folks who only follow some of the rules, well, you’re just not as holy as me” (at this point a gleam of light beams from your front tooth)😃

This type of thinking is Pharisaic. “The Imitation of Christ” tells us that we are to behave as if everyone around us is holier than we are, better, and more devout. This will keep us from arrogance and self-assured arrogance. We should think of ourselves as not as holier and more needy of Christ’s grace. “Cafeteria” Catholics is a lousy term.

I am sorry you don’t like the term, the term Cafeteria Catholics wouldn’t even be in our vocabulary if it weren’t so. They are out there, unfortunately. I know of one who just picks and chooses what she wants to do. Too many like that.

Well Caferia Catholics pick and choose certain teachings of the Catholic Church. A Catholic can reject the teaching on the contraception. To deny this teaching opens doors for heresy.

A Catholic ought to remain obedient to the Church.

Church Laws on Moral and Faith do not think like mind of man. Rather the Church is guided by the Holy Spirit.

For God’s ways our not our ways, and our ways are not his ways. Catholics who have a problem with Church teachings have a problem with Jesus.

People are presenting the Truth that God has revealed to us in His written word.

How is this attacking anyone??

Sigh, I was using the word agnostic in its other meaning, one who is uncommitted to an opinion on something. I’m sorry you did not find the word familiar in that context.

You strike me as being very angry about religious dissent. Why?

Actually the word “εκκλησια” is derived from the preposition “εκ” (“from”, amongst others) and the verb “καλεω” (“I call”) - and the basic meaning of the noun can therefore be described like that of a verb turned into a noun = “the having been called”.

But in the NT, it IS used of the Church Catholic (again - not the same as the RC church!), but it is both used of individual congregations and of the Church in general (1 Cor 14:23 versus 1 Cor 15:9, are two examples of these different uses within the context of the same letter!).

And yes, the word “καθoλικoς” (typo?) means “universal”. That is one of my points as well - i.e. “Not just referring to the RC church”.

And what title the pope has strikes me as rather irrelevant. I could call myself by that title - but that would not mean that the statement would be true. (and to the rest of you outthere: please don’t bring up Matt again? We’ve been through this discussion so many times that it can compare to the tons of spam-mails we all get…)

Manny, if you more carefully read his post, he doesn’t say the Catholic Church is agnostic in general, he says it is agnostic politically, not a puppet for the GOP. What he’s saying is the Catholic Church in decades past kept its nose out of political affairs. Nowdays, with Catholic Answers and EWTN voter guides, etc. and demands that Catholics vote a certain way over certain issues, the Catholic Church is entrenched in American politics deeply. Basically with the set of moral voting standards they have set out, no Catholic could ever vote democrat, libertarian or most other parties, pretty much Republican or Independent (if it is pro-life). Agnostic to politics, not agnostic to deity. That’s at least what it sounded like he was saying to me.

And just because he’s Jewish doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand Catholicism. Maybe he just doesn’t agree with it and didn’t come to the same conclusion about it as you did? Who knows…

Why is it when Catholics, I mean truly devout ones defend the church, other non-Catholics always say they are angry. You must feel the passion we feel as Catholics, and that we love our church, our pope and everything else Jesus gave us.

On the contrary. This Lutheran has got his info all RIGHT.

If “Roman-Catholic” is not a proper description of the Church that is led from Rome, then I do not see what description I can use without compromising the truth; which is that the Church Catholic consists of ALL believers in Christ from ALL denominations. I gave up “Roman Church” because of charity. I will go no further. So sue me.

What y’all call “the Catholic Church”, I call the “Roman-Catholic” church. Deal with it…or don’t.

Use the term agnostic in the proper context. I have problems with individuals who have issues with the Catholic Church. My reasons behind this is because I believe Jesus established One Church. He did not founded Protestantism or other so called Christian churches. He only founded One Church upon Peter. The Catholic Church.

If he did not found the Catholic Church, then Jesus Christ lied to us and that we die in our sin. Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The Catholic Church is the Pillar and Bulwark of Truth. To go against the Church is to go against Jesus Christ.

You often heard that the Church is the Bride of Christ. You know when someone insults the wife of man. The man will get angry. You insult the Bride of Christ, you insult Jesus.

No man has the Right to Rebel against Church. Those so called Reformers and others who left the Church leave out of pride. They are like Satan who out of pride rebel against God.

Tell me what is the title of our Catechism? It isn’t called Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church. It’s called Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Compendium of the Catholic Church.

Roman Catholic Church refers to the Latin Rites. Do you not realized that 300 yrs ago, certain Orthodox Church reunited with Vatican. These are called uniates Churches who recognized the authority of the Pope.

To say the Catholic Church is the “Roman Catholic Church” it would be an insult to a Catholic who is NOT ROMAN but Byzantine, or Antiochean Catholic etc…

How is it that you once accepted Jesus Christ, yet now you reject him?
This is a good question. I was thinking the same thing? I can understand how some folks grapple with issues taught by the Roman Catholic Church that they disagree with or don’t fully understand, and leave for another denomination. That at least makes sense, but I can’t imagine leaving the faith of Christ for a religion that sees itself as unfulfilled and still awaits a messiah that has already come? How can you come to know the Gospel and then not believe in the Lord? Like I said, I at least understand doctrinal differences and arguments about Christ, but rejection of Him I don’t understand?
