Non-Catholics: What do you find admirable about Catholicism?

I figured since there was a thread asking Protestants what they find oddest about Catholicism, I’d start one asking all non-Catholics what they find admirable about the religion.

For me, the thing I find most admirable about Catholicism is the way they stand up in defense of human life, from conception to natural death. In my opinion this is the most important work they do, esp. in our “culture of death” society.

I’m active in the pro-life movement, and I see firsthand how much committed Catholics do to help rescue the unborn, stop the death penalty, help the homeless and the poor, and end other forms of injustice.

I have to agree, about the Catholic Church’s commitment to life. Standing out against abortion is a very unpopular position these days, but Catholicism has never compromised on the rights of the unborn child.

The abortion issue has done more to bring evangelicals and Catholics closer together than all prior ecumeinism efforts combined.

In our city we have just started to increase the work for this group of people. I am learning alot about the respect for everyone needs and desires.

Human life is a big one. I also think music a ton of our current musical history and styles grew out of the CC.

Yes, it is good to have a thread about what non-Catholics find admirable about Catholicism. It is a good adjunct and counterbalance to the threads relating to what puzzles/puts off/is odd about Catholicism to non-Catholics. Hope you get plenty of responses.

What first came into my mind is the deep piety that Catholicism engenders in many of members. I also admire the open-mindedness, concern for others, including non-Catholics, and the positive action which can result.

And deep thinking. Over the years painstaking care and thought has gone into the development of liturgy and theology. Though I don’t agree with much of it, I respect the care taken in it’s development.

I think its very good that people in the Catholic Church do many very good acts of charity and give much needed help to needy people. Also their good work in trying to save lives re abortion is excellent. Indeed I would say that I admire people in many different religions who do good sincere work to help people.

However I must say that while I admire Catholics and people of other religions who are doing good charitable works to help many needy people I’m very concerned that the urgent spiritual need of people is not being dealt with.

God clearly tells us in His written word that all people are sinners, separated from God and that the wages of sin is death (eternal separation from God). Now this is very serious need that all people have but the good news is that Christ Jesus alone can forgive ours sins and give us eternal life.

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned Rom 5:12

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom 6:23

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

The way that the Roman church holds fast to the basic truth that you can’t just claim to be Christian, and not let that shine through you life (in defiance of today’s post-modern “I’m Christian, but it doesn’t really mean anything for the way I live my life”) - and the way it stands up for basic doctrine that has become severely politically incorrect (like refusing to allow “women priests” (a contradiction in terms)).

Plus, of course, the huge effort by the Roman-Catholic church against homophilia, promiscuity, “abortion”, etc.

The fact the Church has been teaching this for 2,000 years is another reason to admire the Church

The Roman-Catholic church, with all its characteristics, did not come into existence until after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, where there was no longer an Emperor to be the uniting figurehead.

The Catholic role models who are heroes for their faith, strength, dedication and powerful love of God.

Mother Theresa, Pope John Paul II, Missionaries all over the world working tirelessly with the poor, Priests, and nuns especially the cloistrered Poor Clares, and all Religious not to mention the thousands and thousands of Catholic Saints many who were martryed for their faith.

seriously, there is one thing i like about Protestantism, generally speaking. They seem to trust in Christ’s mercy more than a lot of Catholics seem to… (me ) but then… They don’t know the wrath of God like Catholics do… (my opinion), especially those OSAS people… …
