Non-Catholics: When you hear Catholics equated to Satan, does it bother you?

I do acknowledge that most Protestants would deny this man’s claim.
If they heard this sermon by MacArthur, I agree. 🙂 But I specifically included the line in the OP about how he is popular in Protestant circles. I have had 2 people in the last few months tell me he is a good preacher, not to mention the show host from which the sermon aired. I would doubt they heard this particular sermon, which was from around Nov. 2006.

Frankly, I listen to MacArthur on Protestant radio almost every morning and he is nothing like he was in the rabid, erroneous sermon I linked to. A couple months ago, he had sermons on how Peter was the leader of the apostles! I was like, “Is this the same guy?” Who knows, stranger turnarounds have happened…

John MacArthur is well known for his anti-Catholic sermons. I have heard a bunch of them on his show which is broadcast on Moody Broadcasting Network. See this thread, this one and this one for more information about him.

I was listening again to a talk by John MacArthur (who I understand is fairly well-respected in Protestant circles). In the 7:00 minute mark of his sermon in this file, he states the following:*In the long war on the truth, the most formidable, relentless, and deceptive enemy has been Roman Catholicism. It is an apostate, corrupt, heretical, false Christianity. It is a front for the kingdom of Satan.*Protestants, non-Catholics, does this sort of comment bother you? In what way??

Hmmm - I had no idea he saw us like that 😃 I have no objection to being called a satan-worshipper - simply because sin & evil are not confined to the CC. I wish they were - for then all others would be healthy.

What does bother me is that by getting it into their heads that the Catholic Church is somehow uniquely “apostate, corrupt, heretical, false”, other Christians are going to be less able to guard their own churches against evil. Those who point the finger are not helping themselves to see their own hidden sinfulness & rebellion against God.

If the Papacy is uniquely evil - how are the Godless tyrannies of modern times to be described ? The identification of the Papacy as uniquely the Whore of Babylon depends on the baseless assumption that there will be no more history, so no future in which something ten thousand times worse can come along. One can hardly blame Luther & other pre-industrial Protestants for having that idea (even though it is unfounded - Revelation is not a prediction of the history of the Church); but Protestants who live after Nazism & Communism ought to know better. I think people who attack a Church - any Church - in this way have difficulty seeing past the sin in it, to the grace of Christ in it.

I think he should leave our salvation to Someone Else. 🙂 Charles Hodge was very critical of the CC - but he affirmed, in an essay written in 1846, that Rome was a true church: [homepage.mac.com/shanerosenthal/reformationink/chrome.htm](http://homepage.mac.com/shanerosenthal/reformationink/chrome.htm And)
And he was as fully a Calvinist as John MacArthur.

To imply that other Calvinistic Christians are somehow in need of conversion, because they think that Catholics are their brethren in Christ, implies that belief in the horribleness of Rome is somehow necessary to being Christian. That makes no sense, because it implies that justification by grace through faith is not enough - one must also perform the work of rejecting Rome. That is not Evangelical at all, but salvation by works. 😦

It bothers me because I do not feel it is justified to attack fellow Christians simply because we do not agree with them. On a similar note though I object to Catholics who call Protestant’s Satan’s spawn or some such similar name.

In a world where Christianity is so often under attack and where so many people have not heard the Gospel, I think it is wrong for Christians to snipe at each other. Our efforts would be bettered utilized in carrying the message to those who don’t believe.
Yes, absolutely, and likewise when Catholics equate Protestantism with Satan.
Yes, I agree. The only person who is getting anything out of that kind of trash talking, is satan himself…I am sure that he is just delighted any time that Christians begin name calling each other.😦

See this thread, this one and this one for more information about him.
And here I thought this sermon was exceptional. What’s funny is that in a conversation I had with someone about him, I speculated that he got his info from Lorraine Boettners Roman Catholicism…the other person derided me and was like “How do you know where he got it from did you ask him!” And in your link lak611, I see him quoting from that book! 😃

Doesn’t James White also consider himself a Calvinist? If that is the case, I’m a little unnerved at today’s front-line Calvinist voices.

When I hear anyone equated with “satan” it bothers me. When I hear those who profess to have “the fulness of truth” speak about their “separated brethren” in a disparaging way it bothers me. When I hear the “separated brethren” speak disparaging remarks about the Church of Rome…it bothers me…when I hear “Christians” speak in words and in condemning terminology toward any who would disagree with them and in such “unchristlike” terms…the Light Within burns dimly in many.
I agree.

I totally agree this is the time when all of us Christians need to unite and stand strong together. This is the only way we will beat satan, he hates unity.
and what is your idea of ‘unity’? that protestants and orthodox christians become roman catholics? some people here have that kind of mindset.

You are one of the most hateful people I have ever encountered. Do you enjoy seeing people fight? I never stated any such thing and please stop putting words in others mouths.!

And as the comedy folk singer Alen Sherman worte:

[sing along]]]]] " Annnnnnd… Everyone hates the Jews "

you are being judgemental, my dear. you are the one who resorted to insults in the other thread. anyway i still forgive you, even here. 🙂

what exactly was my hate message?
Do you enjoy seeing people fight?
only in wrestling matches & video games. 😃
I never stated any such thing and please stop putting words in others mouths.!
thats why i was asking you whats your idea of unity. ive seen catholic extremists here who thinks that one is either a catholic or an anti-catholic.

What was hateful about his comment? If what you read leads you to believe that Agnos Theist is one of the most hateful people you have encountered, I envy you. There are plenty of much more obnoxious folks out in the world…

err why should you envy someone who sees a super adorable guy like me as most hateful? 🤷

Does it bother me? It can’t do anything else!

As a Lutheran pastor, I would say that anyone who equates the Catholic Church with Satan is, at best, misguided and, at worst, a tool of Satan. Anything that can be used to drive more wedges into the already (and sadly) divided Church on earth is nothing else.

I don’t particularly like John MacArthur’s theology and I don’t think he is a great representative of protestant theology as a whole. His statement is absurd and should be disregarded as the rambling of a closed-minded, elitist individual.

Peace…

That is why CAF invented the ignore box. If he annoys you use it.

I have seen John Mc Arthur in CNN and let me tell you, modesty is not one of his virtues. The guy is deffinitively a fundie. And I doubt he even thinks of liberal protestants as Christians. Orthodox and Catholics are sure apostates. According to him anyone who is not a “Bible Believing Christian” ™ is not a christian. That includes Young Earth Creationism as a sure sign you are not an apostate.
If he is a rising start in evangelicals circles they are in trouble.
