It bothers me when Catholics are equated to Satan, because I know that Catholics are Christians! It also bothers me I see it as a sign of complete uneducated prejudice, not to mention simple hate.

Of course it bothers me. They think I’m satanic! LOL. But it should really just make me laugh. Protestants who degrade Catholicism know nothing about it, in my opinion.

I would have to agree that at least MacArthur knows nothing about it. Apparently he has been reading Lorraine Boettner’s book and has said as much himself. In the sermon linked in the OP, MacArthur also said Catholics “worship saints” and that Purgatory is a “second chance.” If you can’t get those right, you aren’t trying… 😊

I have seen John Mc Arthur in CNN and let me tell you, modesty is not one of his virtues. The guy is deffinitively a fundie. And I doubt he even thinks of liberal protestants as Christians. Orthodox and Catholics are sure apostates. According to him anyone who is not a “Bible Believing Christian” ™ is not a christian. That includes Young Earth Creationism as a sure sign you are not an apostate.
If he is a rising start in evangelicals circles they are in trouble.
Unfortunately, the man is popular. He even has his own study Bible. He also has a TV show now on DirecTV.

I think it’s rather hilarious that a man who bases his faith started by a schismatic monk in the 1500’s who gave up celibacy and married a nun and accused the pope of being the anti-christ can claim that RC is the forefront of Satan.

And on top of that he claims the RC is heretical. Yea, since the church broke away from protestantism and made new doctrines to disagree with the ones already in place

Makes for a scary bed time story.

Actually MacArthur’s beliefs come from Calvin, not Luther.

most formidable, relentless, and deceptive enemy has been Roman Catholicism. It is an apostate, corrupt, heretical, false Christianity. It is a front for the kingdom of Satan.[/INDENT]
Protestants, non-Catholics, does this sort of comment bother you? In what way??

I’m not surprised that a protestant says something like that. They just hate us. Hatred in the name of God is a commone feature of protestants and muslims. I feel sorry for him and for those who follow him. They don’t even know that by hating others they are so far away from God.
A short story from London. Some time ago British parliament was discussing the issue of unreasonable PRIVILEGES (not rights!) for gays. I was there among a crowd of protestants to say no. One of them said a joke about a pope. Other protestants laughed.
After a moment another joke, and laughter again. As you see even in a situation when CC and protestants are together and want to defend common sense, they hate us anyway. The law was accepted.

I hear a lot of anti-Catholic stuff here in Korea, which is very evangelical Protestant. It has always bothered me. People often tell me that Catholics are wrong because they worship Mary, not Jesus or God. I am quick to point out that it isn’t true. I am not religious (I am, as you can tell from my screen name, just wondering), so I surprise myself at how vehemently I disagree when people say stuff like that. I think I’m probably going to end up converting to Catholicism.

I wouldn’t worry too much about jokes unless they are cruel. Protestants tell jokes about themselves too. As a Presbyterian we are always joking about how stingy we are. Jokes don’t necessarily mean hatred. Even if they seem mean they are often not intended as such. It may be a lack of understanding of the importance of the subject matter to others. I would hope there was no hatred involved.

I was listening again to a talk by John MacArthur (who I understand is fairly well-respected in Protestant circles). In the 7:00 minute mark of his sermon in this file, he states the following:*In the long war on the truth, the most formidable, relentless, and deceptive enemy has been Roman Catholicism. It is an apostate, corrupt, heretical, false Christianity. It is a front for the kingdom of Satan.*Protestants, non-Catholics, does this sort of comment bother you? In what way??
Funny I was in another forum a while back with an elder from MacArthurs church. Oh the arrogance…🤷 As to why I no longer participate there, nothing gets on my nerves more than unbridled arrogance from those who claim to speak for me.

As to the influence of John MacArthur, I would refrain from overestimating his influence in “Protestant” circles.

He is not influential at all in mainline Protestant circles.

Having written the book “Charismatic Confusion”, he is not influential in Pentecostal/Charismatic circles.

This elder referred to Billy Graham as a heretic. I suspect therefore he is not all that influential in much evangelical circles.

So what is left.

Really. I never had that encounter while I was in Korea in 1999-2000.

The funny thing is that McArthur is often invited to Larry King and featured with Ted Haggard in a Jewish documentary on the Protocols of Sion in a part about Jewish evangelical relations.
So he is being picked on purpose. Do you think they have and agenda to use him to hurt evangelicals? Misrepresenting them by using their more bonehead faction.

Yes, it does bother me, because Jesus was called the Prince of Demons or something like that and his followers will be called similiar names.

He claims in his talk that he has been on the same “team” as R.C. Sproul in ecumenical meetings. Sproul, I also understand from others on this forum is respectful and influential. No?

That is exactly the thought I had for reasons why this shouldn’t bother me. He unconsciously applies one of the characteristics that identify Christ’s followers to the Catholic Church. Kind of like those who crucified Christ unconsciously fulfilled the prophecies of the OT…

The part that does bother me is that MacArthur advances lies among people who don’t know better.

Well I am not sure how much influence Sproul has amongst mainline Protestants but anyway…

I also haven’t heard Sproul demonize Pentecostals/Charismatics and Billy Graham the way I have heard MacArthur and/or his followers do.

I have never heard Sproul say the Catholic church is Satanic the way MacArthur apparantly did.

But then again I am not totally up on either guy so I could be wrong here.

I’ve been here 4 years, and I get it every now and again. I’ve probably heard it about 20 times. I’ve been teaching conversation classes, so it comes up every time there’s a class about religion. Some people have pretty backwards ideas about what Catholicism is about. But the protestants are pretty evangelical here, so they’re probably spreading it. Mannyfit, I notice you’re in Iraq now, so I’m assuming you’re in the military (correct me if I’m wrong). There’s a lot of stuff people will say in an English class that they wouldn’t say to a soldier!

What verse? I have never seen this. I know the Pharisees accused him of casting out demons by beelzebub.

Also, I think they accused him a being possessed,.what where is the verse that states what you claim.

Here is a verse that he is accused of being possessed or crazy…Jhn 10:20 And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?

I don’t believe he was ever called the prince of demons.

I believe that it may be referring to the story of Jesus driving out demons from a possessed man. The Pharisees accused him of doing so by the power of the prince of demons, so it would be more accurate to say that he was called either possessed by the prince of demons or acting as an agent of such rather than being called specifically such himself.

Matthew 9:32-34
32While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” 34But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”

Matthew 12:22-24
22Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” 24But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub,[d] the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”

Mark 3:20-22
20Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
22And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebub[c]! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”

Luke 11:14-15
14Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. 15But some of them said, “By Beelzebub,[g] the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”
