Non-Catholics: Why are you here?

I have attended Baptist, Missionary, Methodist, Brethren, Wesleyan, Non denominational, and Mennonite churches. I have grown up mainly in a ND church. I came here to learn about the catholic church and culture. My husband and I are starting RCIA in the fall. While I believe some people enjoy being argumentative for the sake of controversy and others argue out of ignorance or prejudice; many are like me and just trying to find some undefined aspect of our faith that is lacking. I believe that many who are well informed are still holding onto the untruth and prejudice many of us hear from our elders about Catholics and Catholicism. Forgive them… old habits die hard but hopefully they do die eventually.
Hello mia… Good for you and your husband for starting R.C.I.A. 👍
Get the small paper back “Life in Christ”. This will give you a great head start.
You have also come to great site that will answer many questions on The Catholic Church.
May The Holy Spirit guide you on your journey …👍

I’ve noticed that there are a lot of non-Catholics here, and many of them seem to just want to argue with Church teachings. I can’t help but think they’re here to convert us.

However, I know that not all the non-Catholics are like that–I just can’t figure out why else they spend their time on a Catholic message board. So I thought I’d ask.

What brings you, as a non-Catholic, to Catholic Answers Forums?
trolling, all of us

Yeah; that’s it exactly. When I NEED to know what others think about me, I don’t ask the person who is always positive and complimentary. I go to the person who will give me their honest opinion, regardless whether it might be less than complimantary.

The CC is the standard and “she don’t care” who dissagrees with her. An “honest church” must be firm and speak the hard, cold, truth for our own good.

My doctor is like that: “Don’t eat this stuff…Don’t do that stuff… Do more of this stuff…”
Rules, rules… 🙂

Sorry, SamIAm; I usually like your take on most subjects. In this case…I’m a little surprised.

Glennonite
Hi Glennonite, good to hear from you. You definitely make a good point about going to the person who you trust will be honest with you instead of always positive. But…to use your analogy…I don’t usually hear someone say “don’t eat that.” I have heard people say, “it’s okay to eat that, as long as it’s in moderation.”

A religion I feel is more up my alley is Humanistic Judaism. It is like, you learn about some of the timeless truths, and it helps you develop a conscience…but you are given intellectual freedom to be yourself…live a little…learn about life by living it to the fullest.
I actually was raised reform Jewish till I was about 9 or so but I didn’t believe in God, even then, so my mom didn’t make me continue. If I had gone to a synagogue for Humanistic Judaism perhaps I would’ve stuck with it. I think it’s cool how I can be Jewish and atheist.

I’m here to learn more about my faith and can’t think of any better people to learn from 🙂

I’ve only been a member for a week or so and am already encouraged by what I have been reading in various threads. I’ve learnt so much in such a short space of time, and I keep coming back to learn more!

Thank you CAF

I joined this forum because I was in a point in my life when I was questioning everything in my life including my protestant faith. I started reading church history and noticed they were more like Catholics than Protestants. I joined this forum to ask questions and get some questions. I don’t want to argue but discuss things in a respectful way. I have been challenged and encouraged bye the posts in here. 🙂

I guess us "non-catholics could ask catholics the same question! But they’d say “D-U-H, it’s a catholic website!” Why are we offered membership? I wanted to hear different opinions about how catholics viewed certain aspects of Christianity; since my only experience with catholics has been friends and co-workers, who many times come across as rude and overbearing. I don’t paint all catholics, or anyone else from any other religion, with the same broad brush. Didn’t come to argue or condemn, but will defend my faith and the Cross!👍

I would say that many non-Catholics are here because they have questions about Catholicism. Some of them want to debate with Catholics and others are here just because they like the place! In any case, I hope and pray that all of the non-Catholics who visit this message board will receive the light of Christ in their hearts through the help of members of CAF and be converted to Catholicism!
Rather than hope everyone converts to catholicism, perhaps we should hope that all of us, as members of the Body of Christ; regardless of denomination or belief, will lift one another up, encourage and support. I have had the Light of Christ in my heart for MANY years, before joining this forum. WE can all learn from each other, and love each other, as Christ intended it to be!👍👍

AMEN!!!

Ok, I’m Catholic, but I’m glad our Non-Catholic Brothers and Sisters are here. I learn from them and I hope they learn from us.

Real Communication is the first step into understanding each other. By being here, we get to share with them. They in turn find out what we Really Believe, not just what “others” may be telling them that we believe.

I can’t tell you how many times, too many to count, that as a Catholic I believe this or that…comming from someone who has no idea of what we Really believe, they just heard it from someone else, so after all that person who told them, must know better than I do? 🤷 Yet when I tell them the truth, they won’t believe me, because their friend knows better?

So I very much like having our Non-Catholic Brothers and Sisters here. They will hear the truth from us on what we believe, even if they don’t agree, that’s ok, but at least they’ll know the truth of our believes and not some made up things someone else told them.

For that I thank them very much!
What a great post! Acknowledging that noncatholics are not all radical catholic haters. Jesus said,“You will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.” He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, so if we are in Christ(yes it’s possible for noncatholics to be in Christ) then we know the Truth! And just because we won’t address the pope as holy father, does not mean we do not respect him as leader of the catholic nation. So, thank you for those kind words, and we’re glad to be here!😃

I second that.

That’s beautiful 👍 Unification through Christ.

Good Question! 🙂

Well, the first thing I would like to call attention to is the widespread, and all-pervasive nature of both Christianity and Catholicism. If one looks to some religions (like Hinduism, Taoism, etc) they seem (with all due respect) a tad intellectually dilapidated. And this is me speaking as a Vaishnava (Hindu)!

Now, given how powerful Christianity is as a religion, together with it’s sophisticated philosophical trappings and analytical bent, perfected through many long centuries of Medieval logic-cracking, I am honored to be able to CONFRONT and CHALLENGE such a formidable (I hesitate to say OPPONENT, let us say… combatant) in the realm of ideas and thoughts about the highest Dei…

Hope that helps in answering your query, both for myself and others who, cannot help but wrestle with the Influence of Catholicism and Christianity! 🙂

trolling, all of us
Shh! Don’t tell them that! It was supposed to be kept a secret until non-Catholics rule the world! 😉
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

What am I doing on a Catholic forum? Well, it’s certainly not a cunning plan to take over the world, or indeed to tempt Catholics away from their church. 😉 I think the first is a bit beyond me anyway, and the second would be a waste of time. As far as I’m concerned, Catholics are fellow Christians, who like me (I hope and pray this for myself, anyway) are saved, are being saved, and will be saved. From that perspective, there is nothing to convert you to. The job is done already. :o

I’m here basically because I’m curious. I love Jesus, and I’m interested in anything that pertains to Him, and the life of following Him. It seems to me Catholics would know quite a lot about that sort of thing. Also, I’m interested in Catholicism because a close friend is Catholic, and we’ve begun discussing issues of faith. To avoid bugging her with a million questions, I’ve come here.

One thing that I’ve found curious is that when a question is asked about or aimed at Protestants, there often seem to be relatively few non-Catholics participating in the discussion. So, I’ve found myself joining in on some of those, because I can’t resist it. 😃 I hope I might be able to contribute to greater understanding between Christians, which I think is very important.

So, I’m hear to read, and learn, and chuck in my twopenneth. Thanks for having me. :tiphat:

I am here because I have some specific questions about Deuteronomy. Not a light subject but I saw others discussing it on a long thread and I am looking for answers and am looking high and low for my answers. I posted one question on one of the threads where someone had offered to do more research for someone on the exact text I had questions about so I joined the forum and posted if they could do research that would be great. I’ve been searching and searching for the answers but it’s a very complicated subject which involves history knowledge as well as biblical knowledge.

I’m on here to see what people believe and why they believe.

As a former Catholic, I was curious to see why others kept to their religion.

Its interesting to see peoples reactions to my faith (or lack of).

I am here to see how other people act out their religions.

As a former Catholic I find it interesting to see peoples reactions to other religions and Athiests in general.

A lot of what I knew/know about Catholicism is like the opposite of my opinions so for some reason it is interesting to me to hear other people explain themselves. While it would be kind of cool to “convert” someone (one guy said in a PM, “feel free to convert me!”) I have no expectations nor intentions of doing that.

I guess the main reason I joined this forum can be summed up like this: I would hate being Catholic, so I wanted to know why other people choose to be.

***But, don’t you think a seed has been planted since you are here? Personally, I’m glad you’re here to learn about the faith.

Yikers! I’m going to have to learn about quotes. sighhhh.

Love ya’ll, ***
Sheila

…and so far I still don’t get it.
