Non-Catholics: Why are you here?

A lot of what I knew/know about Catholicism is like the opposite of my opinions so for some reason it is interesting to me to hear other people explain themselves. While it would be kind of cool to “convert” someone (one guy said in a PM, “feel free to convert me!”) I have no expectations nor intentions of doing that.

I guess the main reason I joined this forum can be summed up like this: I would hate being Catholic, so I wanted to know why other people choose to be…and so far I still don’t get it.
Interesting. What is it that you would hate about being Catholic if you don’t mind my asking?

QUOTE=mathematoons;8114582]I’ve noticed that there are a lot of non-Catholics here, and many of them seem to just want to argue with Church teachings. I can’t help but think they’re here to convert us.
However, I know that not all the non-Catholics are like that–I just can’t figure out why else they spend their time on a Catholic message board. So I thought I’d ask.
What brings you, as a non-Catholic, to Catholic Answers Forums?

What brings so many Catholics to Protestant forums?🤷

To learn more about Catholicism, to see what beliefs I have in common with Catholics, to see if there are any misconceptions about Protestants out there, to bring greater understanding to Catholic/Protestant relationships (on a small scale), and not to argue but discuss differences. A side effect of this is that I have dug into Scriptures like never before.
May I suggest you go to the website I’ve included below for a better understanding of Catholicism from people of your same faith background. At least one is a former preacher. I was on my way to becoming a preacher, hoping to become a deacon and then an elder like my father-in-law. Some are becoming priests and deacons and others are content in their married vocations. The truth is that it is a group of Catholics that used to be Church of Christ. Most of them have preachers, elders, deacons in their families and give them a hard time, even though they’ve been convinced that Catholicism is true.

I spent a couple of years at a Catholic private school that was really a positive experience for me. I also find people who are into apologetics tend to be more aware of their tradition and faith, and have plenty to teach me.

I’d rather sit at someone’s feet and hear what they have to say instead of airing my opinions.

Because I believe we have something of value to offer Catholics, and also to provide a healthy means of dialogue. Assuming this forum represents the full spectrum of beliefs by those who claim “Catholicism” as their religion, I am always challenged by such diversity of viewpoints within the faith. On a personal note, I hold to most–if not all–the “official” teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. BTW–I was born a cradle Catholic and left because of the pandimonium of the 60s and 70s. In some respects I feel the Catholic church left me. I’d probably return if by some miracle an Anglican Use parish started within 30 miles of me. I’m not holding my breath.

I am a Reformed believer that has been forced to question a lot of beliefs recently. I would classify myself as a former anti-Catholic. I am now honestly seeking answers to my questions. I may engage in arguments, but it’s for my benefit, not the conversion of anyone here. In short, I am a potential convert ironing out my own concerns and misconceptions. Thanks for asking 🙂
Good for you Rogare… You came to the right place to get your questions answered. 👍

I am interested in what my brothers and sisters in Christ from different faith traditions believe. I don’t think any one of the three main Christian faith traditions has all the answers… but between all three of them, they do.

I don’t believe Catholicism or Orthodoxy is more true overall than Protestantism, else I’d convert (probably to Orthodoxy, since from my PoV they have more of it right). But I believe both have some important truths that my fellow Protestants have mostly missed.

IDK if I’ve ever seen a Catholic in a Protestant forum,.

I surely have seen it.

I asked this question a few months ago with a poll attached. Most people seemed to be here for faith questions and answers, very few were considering converting.

If I was a betting man, I’d bet that I am going to end up in the water as well. The fact that my local church is dying is exclerating my search. But I have a feeling, I would end up there anyway.

Short version: too strict.

Extended version: I don’t like how the Church tells people how to act and that if they don’t follow the rules, they are offending God and might even go to Hell. Even when one’s conscience says it’s okay to do something, the Church basically says nope you’re wrong. I don’t understand why the Church is so bossy, and I even more can’t understand why people let Her boss them around.
:hmmm:

Then, Joey, I wish you God’s grace and peace as you make your swim. May you blessed in word and sacrament.

Jon
The same to you. 🙂

But I might consider joining the kayaking team instead. It seems easier than the swim team :D.

This is the most interesting Christian-oriented forum, in part because, being Baptist, I’m trying to wrap my head around the Catholic phronema.
Baptist? You threw me off with your religion “Jesus Buddhist”. 😉

Several different reasons…to learn about Catholicism and try to understand their take on history…

To seek to answer some of my own misconceptions I may have had about Catholicism…and to share the life of Christ with other members of the Body of Christ…it is He who makes us one in Him by the power of His Spirit…not the name of the meeting house we attend.

But would you make it across? 😛
