do you think that abstinence is easy? do you think it doesn’t strain a marriage?
This is a great question, but totally off topic, and needs it’s own thread. No, I do not think it is easy at all. I don’t know if “strain” is the word I would use. If a couple agrees to abstain for a time, for the purpose of obedience to God, or for spiritual purification then I would say that it places a great challenge to the marriange. However, embraced with submission to the grace of God, just like any other 'strain" will produce holiness.

I have never read a sign xyz is not allowed in the catholic church. However that was the case in protestant church’s in the south who would not accept people of color in their white protestant church’s. The truth hurts it anyone has been exlusionary in this country it is the white protestant church. Thus the whole phenomena of the white and black protestant churchs many times seperated by a few blocks.
The catholic church is universal as the name implies everyone is welcome.
Weeeeeeeeeeeell…let’s not cast any stones. Catholic Churches in the South were segregated too under Jim Crow. In fact my current pastor’s first job as priest in the Mississippi Delta in the late 1960’s was as pastor of a white congregation and a black congregation in the same town. His job was to integrate the Churches. From what I’m told, in the places that were too poor to have separate Churches, there were clearly marked “colored only” pews in the back. He faced lots of resistance, even some threats.

So while it is absolutely true that Protestant Churches were segregated (and some very few of them still are) Catholic Churches were too.

I have also heard some of the older folks I know who are from the North telling stories about the Italian Church that was right across the street from the Irish Church that was right around the corner from the Polish Church.

We’re not perfect either.

Of course your church does not exclude non-practicing catholics your trying to convert them. And guess what the Catholic Church does not exclude anyone either for precisely the same reason we would like to convert you. We are not the Mormon Temple for crying out loud that carry on secret rituals. I am afraid you have been misled by your Jack Chick tracts. Feel free to come to Sunday Mass your are more than welcome desptie whatever misrepresentation you have read. I have never read a sign xyz is not allowed in the catholic church. My church does not exclude practicing Catholics either. What is Jack Chick tracts? I attend every Sunday and on every day of Holy Obligation. My Protestant Church has several colored people attending. One of them is an elder at my church. Protestant churches are universal as well.

This is my first forum of any kind. I guess some would call me a non denominational Christian. My thought is that most so called churches both denomintional and non denominational can be excessively controlling. The priest or pastor does most of the talking. The congregation or laity does the listening and is there primarily to recieve the teaching, pay a tithe or offerring and then go back home.

I don’t believe that this is Christianity at all.

The true church are members of His body. He did not say go join a church or start one. He did say fallow me. He implied that we are to forsake the world and follow him.

Yes Jesus is the son of God and is God, but he is also our role model. Jesus is the King of kings. Revelation 1:5-6 in the KJV says that we are kings! He is our king! We are to be as he is. Remember “follow me”.

The problem with “churches” is that for the sake of order they tend to keep people bound to the pew. I understand that there needs to be order and government in any organization and I am not trying to be confrontational, it’s just that this is a weaknesses of the institutional church.

God wants to raise people up and not to keep them down. Because where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.

True. But that freedom is not found in anarchy, but obedience to God.

Obedience to God=Obedience to Christ=Obedience to Christ’s Church.

Remember, “He who hears you, hears me. He who rejects you, rejects me.” (not sure of the book and verse, but I’m sure you can find it, or someone else can provide it.)

Every day of holy obligation? What kind of church is this? I mean it sounds too much like a Catholic Church…do you have confessions? Confirmation? Infant Baptism? Are you guys in a church church or a school cafeteria or something?

This certainly is a myopic view of Christianity. It sounds like you are describing a worship service (liturgy) and equating it with “christianity”. In truth, a liturgy is only one important part of the Christian life.

This is the reason that most protestants are members of the “Church of what’s Happening Right Now.” Why do you go to church? To socialize? To get a natural high? "'Cause I like the music? You go to church to worship God, in company with your fellow believers. That’s why. Everything else is gravy. That worship has to have some kind of structure, 'else everybody just does their own thing. So if you don’t get these superficial things that I mentioned, you jump to some other church that has better music, a more dynamic preacher, a nicer building. The Mass is perfect worship of God, everything else is extra.

You’re right. I saw some priests from the Society of the Divine Word once on EWTN Live (with Mitch Pacwa). On the show they discussed the situation of African American Catholics during and after slavery. The Society of the Divine Word came to Mississippi to undertake the spiritual and educational development of African-Americans.

Here’s an article about the THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN APOSTOLATE AND THE SOCIETY OF THE DIVINE WORD:

Here’s an article about the first African American priest, Augustine Tolton:

Like I said of course you don’t exclude catholics your trying to convert them. I was talking about the segregation practices of the past prevelant in protestant churchs and yes I am aware of problems in the catholic church in the south as well but it was not where blacks were not allowed in church they were segregated in different parts of the church however and shame on them. But it was not as nearly as bad as in some protestant churchs where a black could not enter. Protestant churchs are not univerals they are regional and every protestant denomination is limited by region. ie For example the Presbyterian Church USA not Univerals , SOuther Baptist not Univerasal Baptist, they are not grouped around the world without some sort of division the catholic church is present in every corner of the word with virtuaally every nation and creed that allows the faith to be practiced. Universal also means practiced in every age since the apostolics age and that would be a rather pecualiar claim for you as most protestant church in the USA are of a lineage of just recent christian history. So you don’t cut it as a univerals church in several areas.

I agree Jesus did not want to us to start our own church but I think you need to ready Matthew Ch 16 and Matthew 18 he certainly wanted us to go to the church he established with Peter as its head. When there is a disagrement Jesus tells us to take it to the Church he founded he does not tell us to start our own church.

There is true freedom when you know the rules. Where there is no rules there is chaos, anarchy and subjectiveness and moral and religious relativism. The Bible says Jesus Church is the Pillar and Foundation of Truth and where there is truth there are rules but there is freedom in knowing what you need to do. As we see by the moral decadence of the sexual revolution - what people view as freedom ends up being their bondage. That is why Jesus set up rules and regulations that is bound on earth by Peter and his succesors if we follow these everlasting truths we know the freedom known to the Body of Christ instead of the bondage of those who pursue a false freedom. Freedom is not doing whatever you want.Freedom is the pursuit of happiness using God’s public revelation (holy scripture and holy tradition) as a guide and that is certainly allowed for in the catholic church.

Being the only Catholic wallowing in a sea of non-Catholics in my life, I’ve picked on some undeniable coincidences. I’m told, “If I could see this, or I could read that, then I would be Catholic.” So far from what I’ve seen is that is a total load of baloney and a total copout, because when they do discover that the answers are out there they instantly reject what they see or hear, either by saying it’s not enough, just rationalize it away with “could ofs” and “what ifs”, or simply refuse to take the time to even explore it.

Bottom line. People reject the Catholic Church because they have a personal problem with one or more of her teachings. Because of this, there is no amount of convincing that will satisfy them. They refuse to let go of whatever they are clinging to that stands in opposition of what the Catholic Church teaches and won’t let go at ANY cost. This is because in their own pride they refuse to accept that there is a higher moral authority than their own flesh. Pride is what made Lucifer fall. Pride is the sin of Adam and Eve. Pride is what made Eve reach for the fruit.

Why do you think Christians keep splitting and splitting? One word, “AUTHORITY”, and our pride not allowing us to accept it. We always think we can form (rather conform) God in OUR own image. It always comes back to that.

Do you know what makes Martin Luther different than other Church reformers like St. Catherine of Sienna or St. Francis of Assisi? Pride! St. Catherine and St. Francis remained humble, and through their humility they were able to make great changes in the Church while still accepting her authority. By God working though those Saints great reforms were made, and in the end the Church still remained one just as Jesus intended, even though the authority the Saints were working with was no less than the authority Martin Luther rebelled against.

I know several people who stay away from religion all together because of all the disunity and lack of respect for genuine authority. They see no reason to dive into the chaos, which is the result of prideful men, not God.

When is a train more free? When it is on the track or off the track?

(I give credit for this to Marcus Grodi–a Catholic convert/former Presbyterian minister from the Coming Home Network)

This is a great point. The disunity among Christians is a scandal, and I think a lot of denominations/non-demoninations either don’t care or have despaired of there ever being any solution.

And you’re right about people looking for evidence that Catholicism is true. For example, non-Catholic Christians, who say they go by the Bible alone, often ignore the Biblical evidence we Catholics give to support Catholic teachings.

The CC makes a lot of bold claims that people are uncomfortable with–she is the true Church (the bride of Christ) founded by Christ and His Apostles, she teaches faith and morals infallibly (without error), she has divine authority, she is necessary for salvation, she communicates truth and grace to all. These are things hard to believe in a skeptical world.

The CC may also appear “weird” to the outside world with her relics and saints, stigmata, miracles, shrines, rituals, visions, etc.

Also, living by the teachings of the CC is hard because the Church is so counter-cultural–especially her teachings on morality. Also the CC teaches we are **all **called to holiness which always comes at a cost.

But to get to the point, I think everyone should seriously and objectively study the claims of the CC–even if they seem out-of-this-world ridiculous to you. And the reason why is because the CC has been around for 2,000 years, and if she really is what she claims she is, who wouldn’t want to belong?

Yes, Every day of holy obligation. It’s a non-denominational. We have confession on the individual’s request. We are not required to attend confession. We do it when we feel led to. We have an initiation into the church we do for everyone wanting to become a member. We are having one this coming Sunday, but we don’t call it conformation. However, it is basically the same thing. They have baby dedication, but as far as what goes on at a baby dedication at my church, it os pretty much the same as what goes on at an infant baptism. We are in a church church.

What do they consider Holy Days of Obligation? (Do they follow the American Catholic calendar of Saints, or are they thinking of things like Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Veteran’s Day, etc.?)

When you go to Confession, who hears your Confession?

It sounds like this group has one foot through the door of the Catholic Church already. I suspect that within the next 10-15 years, the majority of that congregation will have joined the Catholic Church.

By the way, it’s “Confirmation,” (sealing of the Holy Spirit) not “conformation.” 😉

Yeah funny how imposter try to copy teh catholic church with their immitations. It’s much to assume they don’t have the Assumption of Mary and the Immaculate Conception of Mary as thier Holy Day of obligation. It is also safe to assume the pastor does not say " absolve you of your sins your are forgiven" the proestants church’s that do have a form of confession including Mormons don’t have the power to absolve sins as Jesus gave teh apostolic church. They just hear the confession heck pschologist do that what we need is to be absolved from our sins.
And what is with the Confirmation but it we don’t call it that? Hey a rose by any other name well you know the story. It is either a sacrament or its not. Also Baby dedications are nice for parents but they do nothing for the baby. The baby needs to be baptized as is the tradition of the real catholic church 2000 years running as it is the only way we get rid of origianal sin. No amount of baby dedications will do that.

Wisdom;

It’s definitely tempting to be skeptical. I’m just trying to keep an open mind, here.

You’re right about the baby dedications, but let’s just assume they’re doing the best they can.

At some point, it’s going to dawn on someone that either the kid has a relationship with Jesus, or he doesn’t. If he does, he should be baptized, and if he doesn’t, “dedicating” him isn’t going to help.

Well lets revist the Bible to make our point. Baptism is the new circumcision the new testament declares thus no need for baby dedications anymore they are to be replaced by Baptism. Also when baby dedications were done in the old covenant they were not simply prayed for their was animal sacrifices involved, I beleive the options were doves for the poor and lambs for those well off, you needed the shedding of blood for the baby dedication to be effacacious in baptism the shedding of blood is Jesus which brings us to the point the new testament also brings us to that baptism buries us into the death and redemption of Christ.
So if your going to insist on a baby dedication as one would insist it is Biblical and not a tradition of man ie evangelical protestant tradition then by all means be biblical kill some doves or a lamb and if its a boy circumcise while your at it.
Now if you want to get with the times and get out of the old covenant you don’t have to kill animals but you do have to be baptized. To dedicate a baby without practicing the old covenant animal sacrifice or baptizing is not be unbiblical and to admit your particiapting in a tradition of man. You really have to make a decision here old covenant dedication or baptism or nothing at all. To make up an in between man made tradition to admit the invention of a recent evanglical tradition that has not tradition in the apostolic church or classical Judaism for that matter.
