A Norfolk Catholic church is refusing to participate in the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade this weekend because Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) is leading the procession.

The Rev. Dan Beeman of Holy Trinity Catholic Church wrote a letter to parishioners saying he was “shocked and saddened” that the organizers had asked McAuliffe to be the parade’s grand marshal.

“Governor McAuliffe stands contrary to the Catholic Church in not one but many of the most essential teachings of the Church in the political arena,” Beeman wrote.

McAuliffe, a Catholic, supports abortion rights and gay marriage. In his letter, Beeman noted that McAuliffe has promised repeatedly to be a “brick wall” against abortion restrictions and has presided over a same-sex marriage.

May Gov. Terry McAuliffe be converted to follow the Pope and the Teachings of the Catholic Church by the intercessory prayers of St. Patrick on his feast day.

I’m with you on that. May God be with us!

There is another thread on this topic over in the Catholic News forum:

Re: Virginia parish severs ties with Knights of Columbus over plans to honor Gov. Terry McAuliffe

Sadly, I am guessing this will be a trend across the US; either a bad choice for the grand marshal, or groups asking to march in “Catholic-originated” parades that oppose Catholic values. In another CAF thread, the K of C has decided to boycott the parade in Boston.

I believe groups will legally and politically keep challenging “Catholic” parades. The days when genuinely Catholic St Patrick’s Day parades, or St. Columbus, or whatever were endorsed by politicians, escorted by on duty police, and had streets blocked off with city permits granted, are almost over. We need to adapt to the new realities. The secular culture is anti-Catholic.

In some ways, this will mean a return to our roots. It used to be you needed a letter from your pastor to be allowed in the K of C, and most anti-Catholic politicians wanted nothing to do with a K of C sponsored event. The original Catholic saint parades - or rather processions - with the immigrants were held to honor God, and the saint, and also to help Catholics recognize their common heritage. There was no money, no political support, no flattering publicity in the daily paper - maybe a few tomatoes thrown at Catholic processions. That’s what it will be like again. And maybe for the better.
