Phew! Glad that’s sorted 😛

Seriously though, not only is NK a threat to the US and her allies (most obviously the south), that’s certainly not the only reason for taking him out. Regime change is the only solution left for our safety, and for the lives of people in the North of the peninsula.

I see no other earthly option, TBH. I am afraid of the day that those nuts say “send us food and oil, or we nuke Tokyo”.😦

I appreciate your commitment, but even though this is probably not the place I have genuinely studied catholic doctrine (you can even see me on this forum arguing with other non believers who tell untruths about the catholic faith). But if we can’t agree on matters eternal, we can both come to the same conclusion that evil men like Kim Jon Il need to be sorted out on this earth too!

they would likely never accept UN personnel doing that, it would mean the end of their reign. The only real way to put an end to this government is to give incentives to top North Korean army officers to pull a coup-deta and remove them, otherwise its a war that runs the risk of involving atomic arms falling in the most densely populated region on earth.

The only way is to attack and take them over—fact.

Just like that high level official that defected last year said attack they don’t have any nukes.

No doubt in mind we would destroy their military with all that old Soviet equipment they have—shooting fish in a barrel.
 
We just had regime change in Egypt.

Why not support regime change in North Korea!

Yes, indeed - if the populace rose up against the government like the Egyptians did. But, that’s just a dream for NK, alas.

I doubt it’d be that easy. We had better trained troops and equipment in Vietnam, but it didn’t help much there. Same with Iraq, and that hasn’t been a peace of cake. The North Korean armed forces, however, have over a million troops and 8 million reserves. In numbers, they would be the largest army the US has faced since the Wehrmacht. And I’m betting they’re better trained than the Vietcong.
 
I think the West should simply refuse to help, while beefing up defences in case of a North Korean pre-emptive strike. They’ve had enough help over the years, and all they’ve done with it is waste it.

Kim Il-Song is merely a figurehead. So is his son. The real power is the military. Until they’re willing to give up their power, all that can be done is to let their state collapse. I fail to see why the US and the West should spend one more cent to help this cruel, vicious, and stinking regime.

The other major player is China. While North Korea may be useful to them in some ways, eg. forcing the Americans to waste a lot of their money and defence forces in a never ending stand-off, I think the Americans should be pointing out that any North Korean collapse will have enormous repercussions for China, and it’s in their own interests to do something about the “spoilt child” on their border (as the Chinese themselves referred to North Korea, according to Wikileaks).

I agree. Giving aid would just help the government stave off discontent. It’s unfortunate that the poor North Koreans have to starve, but it may lead them realize that they don’t have to, but also have the option of turning on their corrupt government. Of course, how would China respond to a free North Korea (or, presumably just one unified Korea)? I doubt they’d take it passively.

How in the heck are we going to accomplish that? The North Koreans basically have a gun pointed to South Koreas’s head. Any move of the U.S. against North Korea could well unleash a devastating attack on the city of Seoul which would probably kill a million innocent lives. Just because Kim Jong IL is an evil dictator doesn’t mean we should attack. We are in a difficult position and have been for many years. If they want food then we should give it to them - on our terms. We go there and distribute it to them under the auspices of the UN. They pay for the food with $$ that they would otherwise spend on the military. Either that or not deal. We need to pressure the Chinese to quit propping up the evil regime. Of course, China doesn’t want to see a unified Korea as their neighbor or a chaotic North Korea with refugees flooding in. In short, what a mess with no easy answers. Certainly not the easy answer of “let’s invade”.

Attacking North Korea would be a disaster for everyone involved. Besides, China is a much greater threat, and the de facto government in the US refuses to recognize that.

We never attacked North Vietnam our armed forces was held back we bomb it only there is no way you can take over a country with just conventional bombing.

The Republic Of Korea was one of the best armies I ever served with; together we could take out the North.

It won’t happen to much politics involved.
