That’s just Brookism at work. Sir Basil Brooke, who was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland for many years had a standard speech, “I would point out that the Catholics are endevoring to get in everywhere. Surely employers can find good Protestant lads and lassies to hire. As for myself, I would not have Catholic about the place.” (Quoting from memory.)
At one point his political opponents (Protestants themselves) accused him of allowing Catholics to be hired as doormen for the Parliament at Stormont. This was such a serious charge there had to be an investigation – and the result was that of 12 doormen, only one was Catholic. He was a “temporary” employee, and “has since been discharged.”
When people talk about the Troubles, they need to understand Brookism, and its impact on the minority in Northern Ireland.
