(CNN) – A former Catholic bishop in Norway has admitted sexually abusing a minor 20 years ago, a spokesman for the Norwegian Catholic Church said Wednesday.
Bishop Georg Mueller admitted to having sexually abused an altar boy but said there were no other victims, said church spokesman Andreas Dingstad.

Mueller, 58, became a priest in 1978 and served as bishop of Trondheim, Norway, from 1997 to 2009. The abuse is said to have happened more than 20 years ago, when Mueller was a priest in Trondheim, Dingstad said.

I muat admit this was quite a shock. To be honest, most weren’t surprised when Müller resigned last year - there had been turbulence since he was appointed bishop by JPII against the recommendations of the other priests in the diocese, not to mention his superiors in the PicPus congregation. They protested vehemently, and then withdrew all their other priests from the diocese and moved them to the neighboring one. So we knew there were problems (also, I think that many suspected he was having an affair with the church secretary, since they were as thick as thieves at the time.) However, I didn’t live in the parish or even the diocese at time, so I only got my news second and third-hand.

But that he was an abuser was a surprise. I did my RCIA with him, because he was also parish priest at the time - but fortunately I was received into the church by another priest. I did attend his bishop’s ordination (I think I still have the card he made for the occasion in one of my prayer books - gotta get rid of that ::shudder:🙂 To be honest, most thought JPII was finally off his rocker to appoint him - he had been apostolic administrator of the diocese for a number of years, and he was just not well liked. But molestation and abuse? Paedophilia? Now it seems that there’s rumors of another boy being abused, this one much younger than the one mentioned here.
 
yeah- eventually we Catholics will have to wake up and deal with the atrocities committed by our leaders. We must have a no tolerance policy for those who molest and rape children!
 
It’s good to hear that one Bishop took responsibility.
To cover-up abuse is just as bad as actually abusing. All involved in covering-up and keeping the abuse secret should hand every document over to the legal authorities. To resist the legal authorities is to resist God as Romans 13:1-7 states.
My faith is strong in God, but I must admit, that I’ve lost some faith in the Church sadly.
I’m a convert after attending a fundamental seminary. I’m also a licensed counselor.
