I understand what you mean about love being an action, not a feeling. I do try to treat him with love, though this is very difficult sometimes. The feeling I am speaking of is the attraction I had for him, what drew me to fall into the love-feeling with him,

.
I think that it might help if you discuss being more healthy as a family project… That way all the pressure isn’t on him alone to loose weight. If he is like my husband, telling him what he needs to do will only make him more stubborn because he will view you as attempting to mother him. But making eating healthy a family project will not take all control from him. It can be something positive and fun that you both do together.

sorry didnt mean for mine to go through so much my computer screwed up.

Things have gotten much worse. Please, please continue to pray for us.

I have two suggested books for you:

Fr. Thomas Dubay “Deep Conversion, Deep Prayer”

Matthew Kelly “The Seven Levels of Intimacy”

Thank you so much. I wanted to give you an update.

This weekend, we went up to Cleveland together. We had a nice time overall, talked about things, enjoyed dinner, etc. Eventually, the topic of alcoholism came up at my grandparents’ house. My husband drinks a lot, and is a definite alcoholic - what I would call a “controlled alcoholic.” He only drinks at certain times, mostly drinks beer, will have 8 or 9 but claim 5 or 6, does shots when he’s out partying with his buddies, which is about once a week, that kind of thing. His drinking used to be much worse - drinking before work and such. He denies being an alcoholic. Anyhow, my grandmother was talking about my grandfather who quit drinking because it made him act stupid, though he never had a drinking problem. She said a lot of things I agreed with and said so. During this, my husband gave me dirty looks the entire time. He resents me even slightly disagreeing with his drinking.

Also, as I mentioned, he is very insensitive to my anxiety problem. On our way home, he was driving very closely to people in front of us, three or so cars that were driving very erratically. I was honestly very afraid. My brother died in a car accident a few years ago, and things like that make me nervous. Finally, I asked him to please back off a bit because I was afraid. He got angry and slowed down to about 50 on the highway. He does things like this all the time, and I feel like I have to constantly tiptoe around him. He can’t just reasonably slow down a little to back off. He always has to “show me” for some reason.

Today, he took our 4-year-old to the movies and while he was gone, my mom came to talk to me. She and my dad were concerned because when they each came downstairs in the morning on separate days before work, my husband quickly left the computer room and went into the kitchen. This, of course, is what he always did when looking at porn. It wouldn’t be a surprise to me if he were looking at it again, of course.

This launched us into a huge discussion about how my parents are worried about the kids and I and can tell he doesn’t value me. My dad came home during lunch on Friday to give us a little money and directions for our trip to Cleveland, and my husband had the music blaring. I just kept thinking I should deal with it and not ask him to turn it down. I had turned it down earlier and he got mad at me. Finally, I was a nervous wreck with the music blaring, the kids yelling, and trying to listen to my dad that I finally asked him to turn it down. Yes, I was exasperated, but not mean. He gave me a very dirty look, turned the stereo off and stormed out of the room, right in front of my dad. This really upset my dad, to see how mean my husband can be to me. After my dad left, he screamed and swore at me.

Talking more about it, I decided that I would stay in Ohio with the kids while my husband finishes out the year left we have in Japan. I am going to finish my prerequisites and apply to nursing school while I’m here, which is something I can’t do in Japan. I told my husband that I love him and don’t want to divorce, and that we need a period of separation to work on ourselves. I am on a mission to raise these kids in a way that would make God happy, because I will have to answer for that one day, and I want him to be with me on this mission. During the year, I asked him to sell our computers, quit drinking, and take at least two classes per term toward his accounting degree. He was upset about my asking him to get rid of the computers. I told him God would provide a way for him to get his schooling done without it, whether from going to the library or borrowing a computer.

He went to stay at his mom’s for a couple nights to think. Please pray for us. I do not want this marriage to end, but he has to grow up and make some changes, and stop being mean to me and putting me through the wringer. The time for twenty-year-old “fun” is over now. He is 28 and just keeps frittering his life away with drinking, porn, and video games. It’s so upsetting. Please, please, please pray for us.

Wow, there is so much in your story that is awfully, awfully familiar to me. I had a trip to my parents house a couple of months before I left him that was so similar…and the problems I had with the drinking (in his case 8+ glasses of wine a night - 2 bottles - which he would call a couple of glasses) the anger, the passive aggressive control, the rudeness to my family, the porn on the computer all were there.

You are totally making a good decision to stay on with your parents with your kids and to work on your degree. I hope this year brings you healing, strength, and peace. You are really doing the right thing.👍

I actually disagree… I don’t think you should fully commit to staying home yet. That conversation may be enough to change him over the next couple of days. See what may happen. Ponder your next step in a prayerful manner. What can you do to improve the situation? What ways could you have enabled this behavior? I am TOTALLY not blaming you AT ALL but there are reasons that he got to this point. The stress of your military life and children plus any family issues are pretty good reasons. He is crying out for help. CRYING out…He is filling a void with his vices. That void could be so many things but I bet it is a lack of respect for himself and feeling down about his life. Did you check out that book called love and respect? You will recognize many similarities in your current situation. Please read it.

Your marriage is more important than your degree, just as you yourself are more important than any of his vices and the way he is treating you. He needs to learn that. Be a tough lover and pray, pray, pray for him. Visibly pray for him. Pray over his head at night. That being said, a couple that puts the marriage first honors God. He is being a jerk to you and its not right. But staying home for 6 months is going to tear you apart, trust me. He needs a stern, loving wife who is present to weather this storm. He needs counseling. There are so many resources out there to help you and him. PM me if you need more advice.

Going through divorce, it is so painful. Don’t entertain it. It is trading short term relief for long term pain. You CAN get through this together. Inside is still the man you loved. Nursing school is important too but pales in comparison to your marriage first and children. Don’t listen to the argument that you need to have an education to have options. He is in the military. He will be forced to pay child support if you ever divorce. Plus there is nothing stopping you from starting school after the next couple of months.

I am really praying for you. But please have some hope. Trust God and continue to WORK hard for your marriage. You two can survive this bump together.

Divorce is painful. Just sometimes as bad as the medicine is, it is so much better than the disease. It’s a lot to think about, and I hope that you have a good priest or counselor who can help give you some perspective.

This is excellent advice:thumbsup:

Get yourselves in front of a priest and into Retrouvaille.

I agree with the person who suggested Retrouvaille. I hope they have it where you are. You should ask your chaplain. This is what he is there for.

There are quite a lot of men who struggle with pornography. There are few, if any men, who do not sin in this area at all. It sounds like your husband is committed to growing in virtue, and in overcoming his weaknesses. Are you comitted to him?

Warren

I am not certain if you should stay or leave. Pray about it, please.

I don’t think that you should demand that your husband get rid of all the computers. If he needs them for school then he will have to spend extra time away from home and this might actually cause problems.

Tell him that you know that he has a problem with porn and that you want to be able to daily look at the computer history.

When I first married my hubby he had a temper also. He would storm out or pout. As we have gotten older, he has mellowed tremendously. I have also learned that my husband reacts negatively to any mothering on my part. His stubborn streak suddenly appears when I get motherly.

Over the years I have found that praise works with my hubby. He really does want my approval and if I point out what he does well, he wil continue to do it. I also wait to make suggestions to him until he is calm and we are doing something together, like playing cards. He is more likely to listen if I don’t approach him in the heat of the moment. So, talk to him about his driving when he is relaxed.

Your husband doesn’t sound awful, just childish and disrespectful. I have to admit that I do go off if I feel that my husband is disrespecting me. So, I would probably have argued about his actions over the stereo’s noise level. But I would also ask him if I could have requested turning down the stereo in a different way that wouldn’t set him off. I’ve often been surprised over the years that actions on my part that I thought were neutral appeared controlling or ill tempered to my hubby. Just asking my husband better ways to approach him has been very illuminating to me.

Hey, I play WOW for an hour or two every night with my hubby after the kids are in bed and I am 41! I still like video games.😛

It does sound like your hubby might have a problem with porn and needs some help to break the addiction.

I agree that drinking heavily with friends once a week is too much. Perhaps you could suggest that he only get with his friends once a month and that he keep the alcohol down to a minimum of a couple drinks. Getting tipsy occasionally isn’t wrong nor is occasionally relaxing with his friends. Perhaps though you could suggest that you both have couples over to your house more often. This might give him time to be social with different friends who are more family oriented.

I would also like to add that although your parents mean well, they might be accidentally hurting your marriage. I bet that your hubby has already picked up that they are not happy with him. This might be the reason that he pouted about the stereo. Your hubby might have a problem with how to verbally express his emotions so he does passive aggresive things. Like blaring the stereo when his father-in-law is around. It might also hurt his male pride to take money from a man that he knows dislikes him.
Did you both agree to take a financial gift from your parents? Maybe you could assist your husband in expressing himself better.

Thank you so much for your advice. I am praying for God’s direction.

I don’t want to abandon my husband. These problems have been going on for years, and I have tried to help him for years. I have prayed with him, prayed for him, talked for hours with him, read books on what he’s going through, had masses said for him, bitten my tongue more times than I could hope to count, and have basically been disrespected to avoid another fight time and time again.

I do not want to divorce my husband. Being alone, working full-time with two kids does not sound appealing to me. I don’t want to leave him to his devices and hear about how he’s ruining his life, but I can’t continue to be his mother. I can’t continue to be wracked with anxiety and nervousness at the thought of setting him off again. I can’t continue to wonder about the porn, or to try to control his drinking. I have done this for years. I keep thinking about my boys, how they deserve a two-parent house, they deserve better. But what kind of example is a mean, alcoholic porn-addict to them?

I am still open to the possibility of going home with him, but believe me, when we talked about this last night, he certainly wasn’t begging me to come with him. The most upsetting thing to him, it seemed, was asking him to get rid of the computers. That took up most of our conversation. I would consider getting rid of one computer and putting a blocker up on the other, which we did for a while, but there is also the constant worry that he’s found a way to bypass that. I am willing to give up the computer to save our marriage, but I don’t think he is.

On our base, there are no good resources. I will talk to our priest here in Ohio and see if he knows about anything in Japan, but Retrouvaille isn’t there. We have a couple of overworked, complacent counselors who are more concerned with PTSD than a marriage falling apart. We have a wonderful priest on base, and I could call him before my husband leaves to see what kinds of resources there are. There was a mini marriage retreat over Valentine’s we went to, but it was fluff, though very sweet.

I am going to the bookstore today to get these books. I am trying to hold out hope. I am praying constantly about this. I can’t thank you enough for your advice and prayers. It means a lot to have good, strong Catholics praying for us. I am praying for you, too.

I hate to see you not get an education if it is available to you. Could it be possible to somehow work the two in together. Maybe somehow have him work with you instead of you both working against eachother. Even if it means a little time apart it doesnt mean that it has to be the end. Maybe try talking to the Priest and both work on changing yourselves a little, to find a way to like yourselves again, And learn to respect eachother. He cant fix this marriage and neither can you. It must be the three of you. You him and God. I think that you are both in a real bad place, and its going to be hard to get out of it. What you two need to do is sit down and say ok, this is where we are, how did we get here? And then say ok now where do we want to be next year. And then lets find a way to get there together. Not your way,and not my way, but our New way. And what do we want for our kids. Then start by taking whatever steps are necessary. God Bless.

Even tho you try to do everything right within the will of God, don’t forget that your husband has free will and may never change. I see your decision to stay in Ohio as a consequence for your husband due to his actions. You have the right to stay in a safe place with your children. From what I have heard about Japan, it may be hard for a porn addict to keep his mind in the right direction there anyway. I say stay safe and gain some serenity. If your husband is worth it and salvagable, he will conform, if not, nothing you do will change him anyway. Leave it in the hands of God and make sure your side of the street is clean. I am 54 and had a bad first marriage. I raised my 5 children with a step father, recieved annullments late, but have made peace with it all. Don’t waste your time playing games. He either is or is not the man you thought he was. God be with you. My five children turned out quite well. One is in his fifth year of seminary to be a priest. God provided. I was humiliated, disappointed and devastated, but we all made it. Take one day at a time.

You are living proof of wisdom and hope and reality wrapped up in one. Good for you. ITs nice to hear the good outcomes for a change. Signs that God does listen, Not that we need them, but its still nice to see.
