When did the GOP switch from pursuing the Hispanic vote (which it was doing pretty well at) to trying to scare them off of voting?

Note Warns Calif. Hispanics on Voting

SANTA ANA, Calif. - The state attorney general’s office is investigating a letter received by some Southern California Hispanics that says it is a crime for immigrants to vote and tells them they could be jailed or deported if they go to the polls next month.

“It’s a very malicious and degrading letter. It’s to pull Latinos down and make them afraid,” said Benny Diaz, who is running for City Council in Garden Grove. He said his wife and five other people he knows had received the letter.
The letter, written in Spanish, tells recipients: “You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time.”

This is a fairly old story here in Southern California. It’s sickening and dirty politics and, IMO, it is absolutely indefensible.

On the other hand it is illegal for illegal immigrants to vote in federal elections.

A federal ID would makes this type of thing end. I have no objection to a photo ID with a thumb print on it to be used only for elections. The original cost would be huge. But, in the long run it would eliminate the charges of voter fraud.

The letter didn’t go out to illegal immigrants or even legal resident immigrants, it went out to latino immigrants who are naturalized citizens of the United States who have the right to vote (that MUST be emphasized) in order to suppress their vote. That’s a CRIME.

The Hispanic activists are crying crocodile tears while hitting the media jackpot with this incident. They couldn’t buy this kind of advertising. The letter was intended to warn illegals, but the rookie Republican candidate (a Vietnamese immigrant) completely mishandled it. BTW, that district has a history of illegal voting shennanigans.

Whoa, Nellie!

To be naturalized, you have to take and pass a test. (A friend of mine, a Christian Arab from Syria, just passed his.) There is a very good study book which covers every question – and the issue of voting is throughly covered.

Everyone who passes the naturalization test knows his rights when it comes to voting.

I did not say whom it went to. It was wrong no matter whom it went to.

I agree with Vern. Those that have gone through the naturalization process SHOULD KNOW what the rules are.

I sill say a federal ID is needed. This way the dead can’t vote, illegals can’t vote and no one gets to vote two or three times. They can be given out with drivers licenses and/or other state and federal ID.

And it was STILL sent to people who have the right to vote from a Republican campaign. It’s a blatant attempt at voter suppression and it’s a CRIME. It is indefensible.

Show me where the concept of a Federal ID is authorized in the Constitution.

As to the dead voting, it is the reponsibility of the Registrar of Voters and the department that tracks vital statistics, like deaths, to communicate. If a person dies, part of the process should be to notify the Registrar of Voters.

“Illegals” aren’t very likely to risk being caught and deported by voting. It’s too much of a risk and anyone who has had any exposure to immigrants at all, including illegal immigrants, knows that they are, as a rule, pretty fearful of the authorities and try to avoid contact with the government as much as possible.

Finally, how many people vote more than once? If people DO such a thing, they should be caught and thrown in jail.

The bigger issue is ensuring that the every single vote is counted accurately. In LA County, where I live, most votes are on paper ballots that look like the old punch cards (they are ink-a-vote, not punch ballots). I don’t like the concept of electronic voting machines that don’t produce a paper record of every vote cast because the risk of hacking and tampering is too great.

In the political reality of it, I think the Hispanic political activists are hi-fiving each other. They couldn’t buy this media coverage. Its mostly playing on irrational hypersensity, and sympathy. This truly first-class media manipulation.

Why is it that no one gets upset that they consistently portray their naturalized constituents as fearful simpletons shaking in their boots that someone will drag them away? In California no less? GMAB!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this seems to be saying:

A Republican campaign (Tan Nguyen is the Republican whose campaign sent these letters) commits a crime that has been condemned even by the Orange County Republican Party (known for its voter supression tactics) and Schwarzenegger but it’s all good because the people who it is targeting should know better?

No moral outrage that this was done? Blame the victim?

Laddy-buck, if you sent me a letter telling me I couldn’t vote, you’d be out the price of the postatge.😉

Now, just what statute has been violated?

Ah, there’s the kind of stubborn attachment to the Constitution that I expect to find in a lot more Americans than I seem to actually find nowadays. Good for you 🙂 That’s the kind of response I’ve been expecting to see at each incremental attack on the Constitution by the current administration.

The California Attorney General is investigating that right now. Since I’m not an election official, I can’t give you chapter and verse, but since the State is expending valuable resources investigating this, this IS an apparent violation of the law.

Here’s a quote from an Orange County Register article form October 18, 2006 (registration required to view complete article)
Penalties for sending the mailer could be stiff. In addition to violating federal laws such as the Voting Rights Act, the state also has enacted a series of laws aimed at such tactics based on a widely publicized instance in Orange County in the late 1980s where the Republican party hired uniformed security guards to stand outside polling stations. Democrats protested those actions, which included informing voters that noncitizens were not eligible to vote.
A state attorney general spokesman said violations under state law could be treated as a felony.
Please note that the Orange County Register is known for its Republican/Libertarian bias here in Southern California.

Californians take voter supression pretty seriously.

Political smoke and mirrors. The only “voters” who migh be suppressed are non-citizens.

Okay, that’s why REPUBLICANS are condemning this and an investigation, with talks of FELONIES, is in progress right now.

The letters were sent to people who have the right to vote, being naturalized citizens, not non-citizen immigrants (legal or illegal – yes, there ARE legal immigrants who are not citizens).

What victim? The letter was about as intimidating than the FBI warning on a movie video. Do you really think the recipients are too ignorant to figure out whether they may or may not vote legally?

The only ones intimidated by that letter were OC Repubs and Ahhnold.

Why are people so scared of a Federal ID? I can not understand it. It should not have your religion, party affiliation or taxpayer information on it. Just proof of citizenship. Thus a right to vote. Show me where it is against the constitution of the USA.

Vern:

I know this sort of a letter would make me all the more likely to go vote. So maybe they need to look at the motive of the person that wrote it. Are they RNC or RNC in name only?

That’s not the way a conservative is to think of the Constitution. The Constitution is about enumerating rights and responsibilities, not limiting them. There is no Constitutional justification for a Federal identification.
