Yay! ND decides to actually SAY something nice about pro-life principles.

Let’s see how they are putting it into practice.

of charges DROPPED against pro-life demonstrators…zero.

Well, we can see how meaningless this is.

One can be prudentially skeptical of such statements, but as I said in another thread, such a statement is something which can be held up to the University in the future as an expectation of how we expect it to live up to its promises.

So it cannot be a bad thing.

The arrests of the demonstrators is a tragic thing, but please do not conflate endorsement or not of their positions with enforcement of simple civil logistics. Their cases should, and hopefully will, resolve (for better or worse) totally as a function of the civil laws they were accused of violating.

I’ll believe it when I see an apology issued for the arrest of all those pro-lifers during Obama’s visit to Notre Dame.

It is a worthless thing. ND is so stacked with diSSenters that its Catholic identity is not only in doubt, but I’m waiting for them to officially change their name to something non-Catholic.

When the school treated pro-Obama people differently (zero arrests) versus how they treated the pro-lifers (cough) I think ND’s utter disdain and hatred of the pro-life position is clear.

Over 3,000 students, faculty, alumni, and community members protested Obama on campus with zero arrests. Difference is that they weren’t trespassing.

Difference is that they weren’t trespassing.
Remember, only pro-lifers are trespassing. Zero pro-Obama types were arrested because they cannot trespass. The double standard of ND is sickening.

Selective enforcement of the law is unjust. Except if it is against the “wrong opinion” then it is OK right?

A typical “dog and pony show”. They are taking a few tips from our President that they so admire.😉

The antics being performed by Notre Dame are becoming nauseating. They can’t simply say we fully accept the teachings of the Catholic Church.

But, it seems as though they are saying that with this newly adopted statement…

Their task force is named “Task Force on Supporting the Choice for Life”.

Think about that name for a second. “Choice for life”?

The title sounds to me like they aren’t opposed to a “womens right to choose” and aren’t there to promote changing the legality of abortion. It sounds like they will only to try to convince people not to have an abortion in exercising their “rights” and not provide material support for abortion. However, formal support of abortion “rights” seems ok.

You’re wrong. It’s pretty black and white. Please read below:

Notre Dame’s statement on the defense of life reads:

“Consistent with the teaching of the Catholic Church on such issues as abortion, research involving human embryos, euthanasia, the death penalty, and other related life issues, the University of Notre Dame recognizes and upholds the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death.”

In spite of their statement, I could still see them rationalizing a pro-choice stance by saying they believe in the sanctity of human life (I would never have an abortion) but they still believe its a womans choice (I won’t impose my religion on people).

We’ll see if the University really is pro-life and this isn’t just a bunch of sophistry. I get uncomfortable when they talk about life issues as a “choice”.

Of course it is a choice in the philosophical sense, but pro-abortion people use the term “choice” to diminish the seriousness of abortion and act as though its a matter of simply choosing between your favorite ice cream flavors instead of whether or not murder your unborn child.

Catholics should not fall into the trap of using the pro-abortion language of “choice” which is insulting to the dignity of the unborn.

I guarantee you that the university would never rationalize a pro-choice stance. It wouldn’t happen. Fr. Jenkins marched at Washington this year with 400 Notre Dame students. He obviously wants abortion to be illegal or he wouldn’t have done that. Notre Dame has an endowment specifically designed for Right to Life issues. It’s through the university’s center for ethics and culture. nd.edu/~ndethics/

Putting aside the Obama Drama, if other Catholic universities would do half as much as Notre Dame does for the Church and the culture of life, we’d be doing really well as a world.

No, this appears to be pure spin. It addresses how their charitable contributions and support will be administered but says nothing about what will be taught at the university regarding pro-life or other Catholic teachings. In typical ND fashion they address money first.

A large part of the reasoning behind the Land O’ Lakes agreement was to make it easier to attract research grants by distancing the university from the Catholic Church. That was a decision the administration made; put religion in the back seat when it comes to the dollar.
