SOUTH BEND — The University of Notre Dame today issued an institutional statement affirming “its commitment to the defense of human life in all its stages.”

Unfortunately this “statement” is too little too late.
Notre Dame University - had the chance to make a pro-life statement, and chose not to.

They gave an honorary degree to one of the most pro-abortion politicians of all-time – How’s that for a statement??

It breaks my heart because I love the Church, and I love Our Lady (which is what “Notre Dame” means).

I would have loved for my daughter to have received a degree from there – but not any more.
They tarnished their own integrity and that of their institution.

I am trying to teach my daughter to stick to her Catholic values regardless of what others say or do… something I’m not sure she’d learn in South Bend…

I sympathize with your disappointment, but I would be very hesitant to say it is too late.

In principle at least, it is never too late.

If their subsequent track record on this issue were entirely unambiguous, if ten or twenty years down the road the honorary degree was seem as anomalous, then it wouldn’t have been too late.

Now, it remains to be seen if that will play out that way. But note with cautious optimism that the statement draws a line in the sand that others can point to in the future.

I for one am glad for the statement. One may not be brimming with confidence that subsequent actions will prove the statement accurate, but contradictions of it will be demonstrable evidence that the University’s mission is corrupted. The point here is, one cannot contradict a statement one doesn’t make.
